The North Face Catalyst 75 Backpack - 4300-4900cu in - 2007

The incredible comfort and support of The North Face Catalyst 75 Backpack won it the 2005 Backpacker Magazine Editor's Choice Award. The secret to the Catalyst 75's comfort is the Pivotal suspension system. Pivotal gives you amazing support with its burly frame while flexing with your body to allow a natural stride and help your balance when you're on really rough trails. This 75L (4600cu in) pack from The North Face is a great size for backpacking trips up to a week. The Catalyst's sleeping bag compartment and side access lets you get to any part of the pack, so you can find your headlamp without unloading everything. There's even a removable hydration sleeve for short hikes away from camp.

Bottom Line: Your week in the woods feels like a day in the park with the comfort and support of The North Face Catalyst 75 Backpack.

Suspension bars break on the pivotal system. Once broken, they turn in to kidney pokers. Ouch. Will report back with TNF repair update.

Holds a ton, comfortable while unbroken. Quality is suspicious.

My Catalyst 75 squeaks. The pivoting suspension is great but noisy. I have tried silicon spray, but still noisy. I have been using the pack for 6 day trips for the past several years. Any ideas?

I have the same issue; the pack is wonderful but the noise is extremely irritating. I'm not sure if there's much that can be done. I am planning on contacting TNF about it. . .

So you want the ultimate comfort and big pack at the same time? Here it is!

I was looking for the best pack no matter what the cost. TNF Catalyst 75 is an absolute most comfortable large pack money can buy. Bar none. I have been a backpacker for many years, and so far I cannot think of anything more comfortable than this pack.
The shoulder straps seems to "float" with every stride. They feel like to work independently from the hip straps. You gotta see the suspension with your own eyes to understand.
I remember of the Backpacker Magazine staff also agreed that it's the most comfortable pack he has ever used.
It also comes with detachable ultralight hydration sleeve for scouting from a camp sight. Great thinking. The top can be detached as a large fanny pack. Lots of pockets.
Big thumbs up from me! Definitely the best large pack North Face has created so far.
If you want an ultralight weekender, Skareb 55 is spectacular!

I bought this pack from you some time ago and I am getting ready to use it this weekend. Do you have some kind of diagram of where you recommend putting which gear?

I am NOT an authority, but...

I heard somewhere it was good to put heavy stuff on top so as to create a higher center of gravity.

thoughts?

Not the lightest pack out there. Very sturdy. Carries big loads easily. It is very comfortable even with 50# +.

Out Dated

A) Wont rest on the ground standing up right when you take it off. Keeps wanting to lay flat in the dirt.

B) No bottom zipper for the sleeping bag compartment. You have to use a side zipper which is held in place with velcro.

C) HEAVY.

Great pack

Used it traveling around Africa -- very spacious and flexible. The bottom separated pocket and top zip-up pockets were both very useful. Rugged design took a lot of abuse. Pack rests comfortably when appropriately adjusted.

Yes, this pack is meant for about a 7 day tripIn this case your size is less significant than the volume of the pack. Unless you're going to cache food along the way, you'll need a larger pack. Remember food is the only thing in your pack that will reduce in size as you continue along.

This is a big boy... plenty of room for everything for long range expeditions. It is comfortable to carry (I am 6'1" x 160lbs) has been durable thus far. Overall, a good purchase.
