Attack the trail with the The North Face Men’s Assailant GTX Hiking Shoe on your feet, and fear not of stream crossings, rainy weather, or snow fields. The Gore-Tex waterproof breathable membrane blocks moistures and expels foot sweat like a suit of armor, and the combination split suede and textile upper features abrasion resistant mesh for the most punishing terrain. The ergonomically designed foot bed cradles your foot and the Vibram rubber outsole gives you 4x4 traction on any walking surface.
Bottom Line: Waterproof breathable protection for storming forbidding trails.
Unfortunately, I haven't hit the trails with these shoes yet, but as far as navigating the urban jungle, they're good. I found that sizing is a tad odd, in that if you're in between sizes like I am, then the perfect fit is tough. I went half-size larger, and find the toe box a bit too long. Normal size, and they were too snug. I'm an underpronator, with high, rigid arches. These supported my feet nicely with good cushioning. The insole has a strangely raised center, though. Don't know how flat-footed folks would like that. Generally speaking, a good shoe. For folks like me, I think half-size up with slightly thicker socks, and life is good.
I bought these shoes about a month ago. I am of Indian origin and have what I consider 'normal' feet - what I mean is not too wide or narrow. I am not an expert on shoes or feet to give you a very detailed or technical answer but I like the shoes. They fit me well and I wear them often. Did not use them in pouring rain yet to test if they are really waterproof but I liked the fact that they are GTX (waterproof, breathable) and the Vibram soles. Some people might not like the specific color (Elixir Brown/Polaris Orange)but overall I am happy with the shoes. Good value at that price ($ 69.97 all inclusive). My boys are in boy scouts and I plan to go hiking, camping etc and plan on using these shoes. I have another pair of Columbia shoes for the snow and extreme cold. These are my hiking and general use shoes. I like them and have no regrets buying them. If you have wide feet, I am not sure how they would fit. Either way, if they do not fit well you could return them - I think the most you could lose is probably $ 7 for return shipping.
Got the shoes the day before a trip to Italy, were comfortable right out of the box. Hiked up Mt Etna with no problems, tackled Sicilian back country, and the uneven streets of Pompeii and Rome no problem. Must order a half size larger than normal.
