More versatile than any other softshell, The North Face makes the Women's Apex Bionic Jacket with a soft-brushed fleece lining to provide just the right amount of insulation for a cold hike or winter ski tour. Four-way stretch, Apex Weatherblock fabric moves with your body, so you can climb comfortably, and the Apex is water-resistant enough to keep you dry in light rain or snow. When you really work hard to get some miles under your feet, the breathability of this jacket will absolutely amaze you. Protected from moisture on the inside and the outside, you'll never want to take off the Apex Bionic. *Please note: TNF outerwear tends to run a size larger than you might normally wear. Please consult the sizing chart to determine your proper TNF size.
Bottom Line: Run, hike, bike, ski, and relax at home in the Apex Bionic.
Really, it is great! The material is really soft and warm, keeps the rain off and I don't feel the wind. I usually wear small size, but I bought XS, and it fits perfect. I was not sure about the color, I got the Moonlight Ivory; it is kind of a different color, but I love it, it stays cleaner for longer time than whites usually does.
I've been wearing this all the time since moving from California into a more snowy climate :) It isn't as warm as I was hoping, but it keeps the rain off me and looks great. I needed it a size smaller than I would normally wear and the fit is perfect. One recommendation: although I love the white, it gets dirty VERY fast, but it does clean off easily!
I was wondering about the white...do you have the snow white or the white/white? I am interested in the snow white but I fear that it is going to be super bright!
The jacket is a great city jacket. As a gear-head and former outdoor store employee I have some issues with some of the tech parts: The zippers are small and flimsy for one. The version my wife purchased has a longer tail, which is good for keeping the back warm during windy days. This jackets should be used for mild weather and light rain. The XS fits like a S for my wife, long sleeves and long torso
I'm deciding between this and the apex bionic thermal jacket. I want something warm enough for new york city winter weather but breathable enough to also wear during fall and spring. should i get the regular apex bionic or the apex bionic thermal?
Great light weight jacket. I believe it is true to size. I read another review that said it ran small so with that I ordered a larger size than I normally would have and it was too big. I returned the first one I ordered and then ordered one in my normal size and it fits perfectly. The next test will be to try it in the snow!
I wear this jacket everywhere and can't imagine not having it now. You can't feel the wind a bit. The only minor flaws I notice is that it does rise up in the front (not sure why). The arms are nice and long, which is great for people (like my sister) who complain that they can never find jackets to sit at their wrists without riding up what you raise your arms or extend them. Also, the zipper goes all the way up and under the neck, which give you a nice snuggly feeling. Lining is soft and super, super lightweight. I would recommend again and again.
This is a great jacket that is waterproof and keeps the wind out. I like the stylish fit better than the fleece jackets, but I'd get a size larger than you normally would. I'm 5'2" and 125lbs and have a medium. It fits well under another coat or down vest, but don't plan on wearing too much heavy under it.
Not only is this jacket warm, but it also protects against the rain and wind. I live in Rural Alaska and the weather here is very unreliable. I enjoy being outside a lot and this jacket is great because I dont have to worry about bringing a wind breaker, rain jacket and heavy winter coat with me everywhere. The rain beads up and rolls off with out soaking the inner warm layer. This jacket is unlike any other I have ever worn, and I have been a North Face Jacket Fan for over 10 years.
This is a great jacket with wind and rain resistance that lets me use it when my fleece just doesn't do the job. Originally ordered this in a small thinking based on the reviews that it would be big enough, but I returned it ordering a medium so I could wear a sweatshirt underneath in cooler weather (and for reference, I'm a normal sized woman- 5'6" and 130). I like the pockets, the wrist warmer lining, and the slightly longer back. Back Country could not have been more helpful and friendly and helped me return it with zero problems. I recommend both the jacket and the company. I'll be ordering from them again.
If you have a long torso, it will not fit. Like most north face jackets, this one has long arms, and short torso. A medium may be a little looser fit, and arms may be an inch too long, but I think you should go medium.
Fitted jackets from Northface are tailored for slender people with long arms, or for active people that need to reach up who don't want sleeves to run down. If you are looking for a more casual fit for average proportions, look at Mountain Hardwear jackets, same quality but better fit.
I sent this jacket back because it was too big. Also, I didn't like how it hung down lower in the back. And, the lining color was not gray, like it showed in the picture when I ordered it. It was brown.
Works well as a great all around jacket. Breathes well and keeps out wind at the same time. Does stain easily though, sometimes takes stain remover and multiple washings to get it clean.
I love my bionic jacket. The brown trimmed with teal is very nice and goes with everything. I had to go down a size in order to get the fitted look I was after. So I wear a PS. I liked the weight so much,I had my daughter get me one in dark black trimmed in gray. The lining is so soft, warm and comfortable without being too bulky. Can't go wrong on this one. Enjoy!!
Fabulous jacket. My first soft shell. Its minimal profile and maximum stretch make it great for high-movement activity and layering. I bought this to add to my backcountry/nordic arsenal, and it may replace my fleece jacket since it's less bulky for that purpose. This jacket layers well -- fit a base and fleece vest beneath and shell atop for a cold, windy day and I was toasty. And I wasn't too hot in milder conditions.
Sleeves ARE really long. I'd prefer shorter sleeves, that makes the jacket easier to wear under another waterproof shell. I don't really like the fleece lining either. It makes it really hard to put on a polar fleece jacket underneath! It sticks and doesn't slide well. I'd also like bigger zipper pulls! Its hard to find them with a finger underneath layers. Forget gloves. Overall the jacket is good. I have not worn it alone yet. It has been butt cold here!
Received my The North Face Apex bionic yesterday and wore it to a ball game. The rain just rolled right off, wind didn't bother me, and to top it off my hubby said it looked nice too. Can't wait to test it out on bike rides and camping. This jacket is amazing...extremely warm with great flexibility. It looks great on my petite frame, the cut is perfecto:-) Thanks
...this jacket adapts with the temperature. It is rated a 4 because of breathability issues and the tiny zippers for the pockets, and there isn't a 4.5 rating. I wore it while hustling through the airport for 35 minutes and found out the jacket traps heat REALLY well. I've also worn it in 22 degree F weather with a long sleeve shirt on underneath. No problems at all! It really stops the wind, which I think is the best feature of the Apex Bionic Jacket!
I am 5'4, 125 lbs. What size would you recommend? From reading the reviews, I am worried the sleeves will be too long if I order a medium. My sleeve length is approximately 29.5 or 30 from the center of my back.
I recommend that you order a small. I'm not a 100% what the sleeve length is, but The North Face products typically run a size larger than normal. I'm 5'7", 130 lbs and small normally fits me really well. Hope that helps.
I bought this jacket for windy days in London and is GREEAAATTT!!!
It is roomy so you can layer a light turtleneck sweater. So you are ready to walk all day long on windy chilly days in London. Perfect for jogging too.
I purchased this jacket two years ago and have recieved comments where I would go. Recently my jacket was damaged at a neighborhood bonfire. I discovered this site and found this exact jacket and made the purchase once again. Where ever I go with my new purchase I still get comments. Its warm, great length and keeps the wind out, not to mention a flattering cut!
The jacket is nice looking but the long back looked really bad on me. I am 5"4" and 130Lbs and not fat at all but this jacket looked really odd. To bad, I have seen it on tall women and it looked good. I sent it back.
The jacket is a nice slim fit that hugs your figure, yet still maneuverable. The only thing I wasn't too crazy about is the difference in length in the front and back. The front almost feels likes a midrift while the back hovers over your buttocks.
I wouldn't call the fit baggy on the Bionic, but if you are looking for true performance fit in a softshell jacket, I would check out The North Face Elixir Jacket. Trade offs are that the fabric is not fleece backed and laminated like the Bionic (less warm, not quite as wind/weather proof), benefits are that it has much more stretch and breathability if these are the characteristics that you are looking for.
I just bought this jacket off of www.GearTrade.com from BackCountry, and it is amazing! I just got it today. It is in the low 30's upper 20's right now and I just wore it to the barn, on top of only a t-shirt and tank top. There is a breeze as well. With snow on the ground. I was toasty warm, it is so versatile I am still wearing it sitting in my hot room. It lets you stay cool inside and very insulated warm outside. Perfect jacket. Great fit, shows your figure! Perfect.
I just got my jacket and love it! I would purchase your regular size you would normally wear for a jacket. I do not think it should be sized up. I had fast shipping and a great price! Go for it!
I just got my jacket today and it is just what i wanted. I got a great price! Fast delivery! I am very pleased! I will order through Backcountry again.......
I recently bought my second Apex Bionic North Face shoftshell because I love them so much. It is great for cold weather, and really keeps the wind out! I found a small to be a little short in length as I am 5'10" but the sleeves were plenty long enough. Great jacket
I just bought this jacket and I love it. Very nice looking and comfortable. Keeps you warm without the bulk. Only bad thing is it doesnt zip into my North Face winter shell. Otherwise, it is perfect. Also, I ordered the mens Apex shirt because womens didnt offer the classic red but the glaze red which is more of a glazed deep pink color. Get it and you wont regret it. I may buy another color.
I like this jacket a lot. I have longer arms and the seam length is perfect. Also, I purchased the white color and all my guy friends thought i was crazy, thinking i'd get it dirty in one go...wrong; it washes beautifully.
I know that everyone seems to love this jacket...and I really tried. But I found it to run too large. I'm on the petite side, but not "skinny" - just normal-bodied for 5'3". I found this to be a little on the short side in the XS, but it was too big around the torso and waist. It gapped at the bottom and was not sleek and flattering in my opinion. Too bad, because I got a great price on it.
This jacket is not heavy but it is unbelievably warm. Some of the reviews made me hesitant to purchase. The high front and low back design is great. Don't let that stop you. It is a bit pricey but once you wear it you can see why. Highly recommend it.
I HAD TO RETURN MY WIFE'S JACKET, WRONG SIZE. I ORDERED THE CORRECT SIZE AND IT WAS PROCESSED EXTREMELY QUICK, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS DURING THE RUSH OF THE CHRISTMAS SEASON! THANKS FOR BEING AWESOME!!!!!!!!! CUSTOMER FOR LIFE!!!
MY WIFE IS A RUNNER AND ABSOLUTELY LOVES THE FIT AND THE WARMTH WITHOUT THE BULK! VERY WIIND RESISTANT. YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS JACKET. +THIS SITE HAS THE BEST DEALS AND BLAZING FAST SHIPPING! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK, CUSTOMER FOR LIFE!!!
Excellent softshell fabric, we've got Igneous Purple colour (COOL!!!). Size is a bit larger than other jackets. So, one friend of mine usually wear size 10-12, Bionic size M makes pleats on the back and sleeves too long. Therefore you have to order size S. Torso is long as well. For lady it fits not so well, especially if the tops size is 10-12 and bottom size 12-14
I love this jacket!! I was torn between this and the Denali, and I like this one so much better!! It's waterproof, and its thin, yet warm. It's really versatile; I can wear it from fall to spring in OK. I recommend getting a size larger, my medium is form fitting so I can't wear it over anything bulky. If I had gotten a large, I would have more room to wear thicker shirts.
I originally bought a size small in pink fever and wasn't impressed. It felt too small and I didn't end up liking the color on me. I immediately shipped it back and ordered a new one in snow white, size M. I ordered it at 5:30 at night and the jacket shipped that night. I got it in less than 3 business days...so fast when it says it takes 7-14 business days. I was very impressed and now am very happy with my jacket. It looks very stilish and will go with anything!
I ordered one in a size small in the pink fever color. Many said to order a size smaller than what you usually wear and since I wear both a small or medium depending on the brand, I ordered a small. I was so excited to get it based on all the great reviews but I was not impressed. I did not like the color and it felt too short and too small. I have exchanged it for a size medium in snow white so we will see how that turns out. I recommend ordering the size you usually wear, especially if you are going to wear a lot of layers underneath!
That's a tough one. You're probably right on the edge between them. I'd go with L if you're not planning on layering underneath or XL if you want to layer under this jacket.
Bought this for an X-mas girt for my girlfriend. Saw it $20 cheaper here at Backcountry. It is a really warm jacket that holds in the heat but still can open the zip a little if you get too warm. Fit is perfect and hugs to the body which is what a softshell should do. I have not been too impressed with TNF products in the last 2 yrs but this is good buy for the money...plus nice to see Backcountry offers free shipping over $50, I am tired of getting ripped off by high shipping charges with online stores. Thanks guys!!!
I brought this jacket for my girlfriend. I selected the small and it looks great on her. She loves it and wears it year round. It is not very popular so that was another plus. My only complaint was the lack of an XS size.
Bionic is right... Looking at the thin jacket you can never tell that it'll keep you warm in cold conditions during runs, but it does a great job of that. Material is light, soft, and stylish. My girlfriend loves it.
It's a softshell so there's fleece on the inside and almost all softshells have fleece on the inside. You want a rain shell or a softshell with no insulation (REI used to make one but not sure if they still do).
This Apex Bionic(in black)is very stylish, thin and so warm! I went skiing up at Killington last weekend and this jacket kept me amazingly warm without a lot of bulk! It fits perfectly under a North Face shell. And it looked great going out to dinner with a pair of jeans! I also love the fact that the back of the jacket is a little bit longer than the front for extra warmth and coverage from bending over/moving around! With three children under the age of 4, this jacket is great for jumping in the car to go to preschool/shopping/casual dinner in cool weather. Strongly recommend this jacket!!!
I love this jacket! I've been wearing it constantly for the 2 or so months that I've had it. With a light sweater underneath it can double as a light winter jacket, and since the weather's been warmer I've also been wearing it outside when it's around 60 degrees. I never feel uncomfortable with the temp inside the jacket. I hope to be able to wear it snowboarding, although I haven't tried yet. It seems decently water resistant (although I wouldn't wear it in a rainstorm w/ no umbrella,) and it is definitely wind resistant. Yesterday I wore this while I rode on the back of my boyfriends motorcycle, and I could tell that the wind was tugging at the shoulders and arms of the jacket, but I didn't feel any wind going through the jacket at all!
I also like how it's longer in the back for when you sit down, and especially for the motorcycle. I bought the jacket a size too big (so I thought at first,) but now I am really glad that I didn't get the smaller size. The material stretches well, but the cuffs of the sleeves are a little too tight, so the bigger size fits nicely if you're going to wear long-sleeves underneath.
Be warned that the material seems a little rubbery when you first get the jacket, but that's what keeps it stretchy and water resistant... it will grow on you! Also, I thought that the ventilated pockets wouldn't be warm, but more often than not I'm glad that I have the ventilation.
The white color that I got looks great, although it's a little harder to keep clean. I was also able to see the red color, and it's more of a dark pinkish looking maroon than a red. Both the white and red and really pretty and can be worn with pretty much anything.
This is a wonderful jacket and worth the money. I am thinking of buying another one (different color). It keeps the wind out and is water resistantgreat for bike riding. Looks good and got tons of compliments.
I've bought several jackets, fleese, etc. and have never been as satisfied as I am with this jacket. I wore it golfing a few weeks back when it was about 45 degrees. I could swing easy with no constraints and also stayed warm enough to finish the round. I have no intension of climbing a mountain but will certainly where this jacket for all my other outdoor workouts and golf from fall to spring.
The Apex Bionic Jacket is fitted and very cute. This is a good jacket to use in the spring. I received a lot of compliments on my 2005 version I had to buy another one, so I bought the 2006 version in both black and brown.
Living in Alaska, the shipping of my Apex came faster than most orders I have received. The jacket fits great and definitely resists the wind. The jacket is slightly longer in the back, which I had no prior knowledge of being so. Backcountry.com is great with credit card security and fast shipments. Thanks!
I love this jacket. I think I will buy another in a different color, even though the Syra Red is terrific. This jacket is perfect for Montana weather, which could be 80F one minute and snowing the next. The best part is that it sells for $30-$50 less than I've seen it in many retail stores and you get free shipping. Great place to buy a great jacket.
The picture and color looks a little different from this jacket. I was disappointed in the beginning because of this. However, I still like the jacket a lot. The only thing I can complain about is that there is no elastic band to prevent wind coming in from the bottom.
I just got a Medium, I am 5'6 and about 135 pounds and I can wear my denali under it, with a T-shirt and tank top, so I would say just stay with your usual size.
What an excellent feeling shell. Fit is true to size. I ordered moonlight ivory. As soon as I put it on, it was cozy and warm. Ordering experience is reliable as usual!
My wife loves it! I bought myself one a couple of months ago, and my wife would wear it around because it kept her so warm. She is always complaining about how cold she gets when she skies, and with this jacket, you enjoyed her skiing experience so much more.
My wife just loves this jacket. It is not heavy or bulky. It is lightweight, but has great warmth. Very stylish and fits very well. Without a doubt, I would by this jacket again.
I have been miserably disappointed with this jacket. After a ski, I am so damp, wet really with sweat. This jacket does not breathe! Any suggestions on a good quality jacket that does breathe? I have gone back to wearing my old Pearl Izumi jacket.
I wanted to buy my 14-year-old sister a softshell that can fit under her waterproof shell, and I came across this jacket. The exterior has a soft, almost leathery feel (wrong descriptive word, but can't think of a better one) and water beads up nicely on it. The wind blocker flap behind the zipper is nice, as well as the side pockets hidden within the seams.
This jacket not only has great looks, but works awesome out during the cold and rainy days. The water just beads off instead of soaking into your clothes. I recommend this jacket to everyone. Nothing is better than North Face for the quality in their products.
This jacket looks and feels great. I haven't had an opportunity to test in cold weather yet, but the style is great. I love how it's a little longer and doesn't hug your hips. My only complaint is that the sleeves on the XL are very long. I was going to get them hemmed, but since the bottom is narrow, it works to just push them up a bit. The other thing that's a bit annoying is that the pockets zip up, rather then down, with a small pull piece. In spite of these 2 flaws for me, I love the jacket overall.
I love this jacket. I fits well, looks good, and the red is such a nice color. I get many compliments on the color. Its also warm, and you can layer it. I wear a t-shirt, sweatshirt, and this jacket and its perfect. Nice price to, this site is the way to go if your looking for a North Face!
I really liked the jacket. I only wish that it was a little more wind proof. But it is definitely water resistant. It is stylish, and I have gotten many compliments on it!
I bought this jacket for my wife because it was getting colder back home. She has done nothing but brag about how warm it is. She says that, even with it being a thinner jacket, it's still really warm and protects against the elements. She has enjoyed it ever since. Thanks for all your help.
My new favorite jacket. Its lightweight and allows for a lot of movement while keeping the wind out. Ordering was quick and easy - my new place to buy gear! Thanks for the GREAT prices.
The moonlight color stains easily, maybe get the black. Overall, its a great jacket. I had some troubles getting it but this site was awesome about handling it.
The jacket was easy to move in when skiing. Also, it was great to wear on those spring ski days where the sun is out, but the wind is blowing at higher elevations. Can't wait to use it during more spring skiing days.
This jacket is great! I seem to be wearing it daily-it is like a uniform or that favorite pair of lounging pants you hang out it--I have black and would like every color! Looks great with my work slacks and after my work out as well!
Lightweight, warm, and comfortable on the plane and in the yard raking leaves. Bought it in white: dog drool, mud, and the filth from the console between the front seats of the car wash off no problem. (The car needs cleaning, though...) Turn the jacket inside out and it dries quickly just hanging up. Waistband is same length all the way around. I tried the coat on at TNF store for size and that one had the longer back - looks funny. Fit in a W's large is A-OK for my broad shoulders and long arms, but I wouldn't wear anything bulky under it. I usually end up in size 14/16 in women's coats to have a comfortable fit in the shoulders and long enough sleeves, with the rest of the coat too big. This fits very nicely all around - hurray. Lots of compliments from strangers, so I guess it looks good, too. I love it.
My sister had this jacket and I had to have it too! It fits great, has just enough pockets, pretty colors, keeps out the wind but you can still wear it when the weather starts to warm up (great for early morning hikes that go on into the day) and always looks "clean". I'm loving this look that works and isn't a "men's" style!
I wasn't sure about buying this coat because I didn't think it'd be warm enough. But I just used it for skiing in the middle of March in Colorado, and it was AWESOME. Very lightweight and breathable, but with 2 layers underneath I was extremely comfortable without feeling weighed down. DEFINTIELY a great buy for your money.
Depends on how big you are and how large's typically fit you. As a general rule TNF & other athletic/outdoor clothing fits a little more snug than other types of clothing.
I got this jacket for my girlfriend who's always wearing one layer less than she should (e.g., raining = windbreaker, windy = cotton jacket). But with this jacket, no more! It's the only layer she needs for wind, light rain and chilly temps. Slightly loose fit but figured for women. Zips have slender metal tabs that don't stick out to disturb profile but aren't so easy to grab, esp. while doing anything athletic.
Great jacket for Oregon winters!! Light but warm and water resistant. It fends all but the worst days. For a climate like we see in the PNW this is the jacket that you need. Fit is true to size and the jacket lives up to it's reputation.
Great jacket! I love wearing it! Comfortable and keeps the wind out and so far has been pretty much waterproof! I work outside so this jacket has been a lifesaver!
I have had this jacket since late summer but only now I have been able to take it for a test drive. Temps have finally hit below 50 degrees and the Apex Bionic has made me happy camper. A little sprinkle this morning did not even phase this jacket, it beaded up and rolled off but I would say the this softshell would not take anything more than a sprinkle. After some shopping and driving around town this jacket actually got too warm. I would say this jacket would provide me with enough protection and warmth from 40 degrees down to 20 degrees easily anything above a windbreaker will do the job for me. The quality and fit and finish of this jacket is top rate, pockets a plenty, and I love the feel of the softshell. The thing about softshells is the fabric does not pill so it looks new all the time. Another North Face product to add to my collection and I have a feeling this might be usefull all winter when its not blistering cold.
The Apex Bionic is great but it is not as warm as I thought. I really like the material. It is perfect for an all day hike when it is misty. For The North Face, the size runs a little bit smaller than most. I bought an XS because thats what I usually wear, and it is a little snug.
I absolutely love this jacket. It is extremely comfortable and easy to move around in. I wear it to class and out hiking. It is lightweight but very warm. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
This is a great jacket - looks good and would be great for jogging or layering. Unfortunately, I ordered a medium (my normal size). It was too tight, too short, and the sleeves were too fitted as well. I would recommend ordering a size larger than you typically wear.
A warm damp rag; if that doesn't work, a warm damp rag + mild detergent; if that doesn't work, throw it in the wash and then go ahead and invest in some DWR. You would've needed it anyway to keep the water resistance throughout the life of your jacket.
