The North Face Angstrom 30 Backpack - 1830cu in

The E-Vap mesh shoulder harness and waist-belt on The North Face Angstrom 30 Backpack help reduce pack-strap sweat on your fast hikes, and lumbar padding means your back doesn’t have to suffer just because you went with a lightweight backpack. If you don’t need the waist-belt, simply stow it out of the way. The large stretch front pocket holds trail maps and sunscreen and side pockets hold water bottles. Pull the rain cover out of its zippered pocket to keep your gear dry when it starts drizzling on the trail.

Bottom Line: Lightweight without losing the perks.

My 2 Cents

I've had this bag for about a week. I love it, but have to admit that there are a few kinks.PROS:-perfect for the purpose it was designed for which is fast-packing / light hiking.-it's very comfortable to run with even when loaded up.-laptop is very secure in the sleeve as the back support give it extra protection.CONS (which I can't really fault the bag for because it was designed to NOT have these characteristics):-I would like a little more room. Max I can fit comfortably is two textbooks a laptop and a light lunch.-I'd like heavier duty zippers. This comes with lightweight - light duty zippers.-rain cover design can be improved upon. It doesn't quite wrap around the entire bag like other backpack rain covers I've seen.-the thin straps make it a bit uncomfortable to carry heavier loads. With that said this pack is great if you use it for it's intended purpose if fast packing / light hiking. It's also great for pack for traveling (came in handy when I had to sprint to my Southwest flight the other night). For students, it's fine if you don't have to carry a lot of books.

I'm a business student and find this pack to be a bit on the small side for college duty. When fully loaded, it's tough on the shoulders because of the lightly padded straps.

This is very versatile and lightweight; durability of the zippers worries me because it's lightweight. BUT North Face warranty covers it and can attest to their great customer service. My pack was missing it's rain cover when I purchased it and a 2 minute phone call got a free replacement. No charge or shipping.

Their warranty department is in San Leandro, CA which happens to be 15 minutes away from me. If you be nice to the operator, you can pick up warranty items to avoid waiting for shipping.

Hey Jessie- This is probably the best pack that I can think of for the type of use that you describe. It has plenty of room for books etc., but is quite a bit lighter for hiking trips. It would be a great choice.

Can the front stretch pocket hold something as large as a bike

Can the front stretch pocket hold something as large as a bike helmet? or a pair of shoes?

When the main compartment is lightly loaded, then yes you can fit a helmet or shoes in the stretch pocket. By lightly loaded, I mean a laptop and a book; any more and using the stretch pocket becomes troublesome.

What's the "official" way to attach the top part

What's the "official" way to attach the top part of the rain cover? it's got the 2 sets of velcro straps, do they attach to the elastic bands on the sholder straps? Just personally doesn't feel right attached there.

Thanks,
Brian

The pack has a sleeve in the main compartment for a laptop with a stay put center velco strap. I'm pretty sure the front pocket could hold a laptop as it is very "strechy", but I don't think it would be very safe.

The camelbak 100oz unbottle fits nicely in the laptop/water reservoir pocket in the main compartment.

The pack isn't waterproof, that is where the rain cover comes in. Like a rain jacket for your your pack. See example http://www.backcountry.com/store/STS0050/Sea-To-Summit-Ultra-light-Siliconized-Pack-Cover.html
