The North Face Alliance Jacket - Women's - 2008

The North Face Women's Alliance Jacket has a regular fit so you won't have to use a chisel to get into it when you're sporting a base layer. The waterproof breathable HyVent 2L material blocks fog and drizzle while the fully adjustable, removable hood and Underarm zips let you adapt to changing weather quickly and easily. Should the days turn frigid, the Alliance is zip-in compatible with TNF zip-compatible shells.

Bottom Line: Layer under and over the Alliance.

How about The North Face Denali Jacket? It's the standard in heavy-weight fleece jackets. The Khumbu Jacket will also work.

Happy customer

I just purchased this jacket after looking for a jacket for a while. I was choosing between North Face, Marmot, and LL Bean. I chose this model because I already had a North Face Denali fleece jacket so did not want to spend a lot on a 3-in-1. I wanted a sturdy, warm winter shell but something not heavily insulated so I could wear as a rain/wind jacket in the spring. I want a black jacket with a hood, zip all the way down, and something that falls at the hips not waist.

I got a medium (I am 5'7' 125lbs, usually get a small or medium top and size 4 pant) and my Denali fleece is a small (that fits over a sweater or tighter fitting fleece). I was worried it would be too big but I like the fit. It is a little big across the chest. When I was opening the package it looked wide and at first I thought there was a mistake and I'd received a men's, but it's not so big that I would send it back and get a smaller size. I like the length and the fit through the arms and hips. When you pull on the hood and zip all the way up, it's a little tight in the chin/neck. Not too tight, but tighter than my previous jacket, might be a bit stuffed if I wore a scarf (I don't).

One thing I really like are the cuffs. I don't like jackets that have really tight elastic cuffs. This jacket has a somewhat elastic cuff, but it still slides over my mittens and has a velcro strap for those who do like it tight.

The material is not as "shiny" as I expected but I like that, it looks like a winter coat not a rain coat. The material is heavier and sturdier that I expected, also a plus, definitely wind proof as it was blustery and snowy outside today.

For the price I am happy.

I have the Denali fleece and I am looking for a shell. I am curious which fit is longer and better for Chicago weather. The Alliance or the Various Guide. I am 5'11 so I am looking for a fit that hits at least at the hips. Thank you

This would be an ok jacket, but it's by no means "hardcore," which would definitely describe Chi-Town's winters. You might want to look more into gore-tex shells: Mountain Light Parka, Statosphere, or the Heathen jacket. You're going to dish out more, but it will be well worth it with weatherability & breathability (and the Mountain Light Parka is 29" instead of 26" (all of the others including this one.)

The Alliance is zip in compatible. That's about it. Honestly for the price difference I'd suggest going with the Venture.

I have the Denali fleece and it zips in perfectly. It also has snaps on the wrists that hook into the shell. The only thing that doesn't seem compatible is the Alliance shell has a snap along the collar, and there's no loop on the fleece to hook it in.

Yes...although it depends a lot on where you ski and how cold you typically get. I prefer to ski in a shell with lots of base layers, it gives a jacket more versatility, but I also ski in Utah where it doesn't get that cold most of the time. On brutal days I usually wear a heavier insulated coat.

The Resolve is considered a spring/summer rain jacket where the Alliance is a fall/winter piece. The Alliance is a heavier more durable face fabric, where the Resolve is lighter and more packable.
