The North Face A5 Utility Pant is your basic canvas do-it-all pant. The A5 Utility is cut with a relaxed fit, and its cotton canvas fabric can take a serious beating. It has a side pocket behind the right side seam that fits a mobile phone perfectly. A waistband with belt loops keeps the pants from falling off at inopportune moments. As for opportune moments, we're sure you can that handle yourself.
Bottom Line: Bomber canvas with a comfy relaxed fit.
Although I will use these pants in the outdoors, I bought them for work. I need a functional pant at work that is comfortable, has deep pockets, looks decent, is strong, and isn't binding. These pants fit those needs perfectly. They are extremely comfortable, even when it is 95 degrees as it was this week. Today, I wore them on a short hike in the Nantahala forest in Georgia. So, I can honestly say they work as well behind a desk as they do in the field. I was so happy with the first pair, I bought another. Thanks!
I am a big fan of the North Face A5 line of clothing. With this latest purchase, I was surprised to see that the durability and heft of the canvas in the pant was much less than previous purchases. I though they had the formula right so it is a bit disappointing to see this downgrade in quality.
Have some A5 utility in the Yak cloth and really like them. The new split twill is a real disappointment. I will not be buying anymore unless TNF goes back to the heavier cloth.
Nice pants for the money. Comfortable and lightweight. I understand the material or weight has been changed and these are not quite as rugged as the previous spec. Nevertheless they are eminently suitable for casual wear, hiking, camping, and just hanging out. I can see if you were bouldering or in a trade that required more abrasion resistant material these A5s would not last long. I like the side utility pocket with the hook-and-loop closure. Nice touch!
I work in a Docker rich environment, and the introduction of The North Face A-5 Utility pant saved me from the world of rubber stamped khakis. I own a bunch of the A-5's (all purchased here) and this latest batch of three pair are made of a different, and less durable, material. The material looks like... well... Dockers. I've rock climbed in TNF A-5's and skidded in them. I wouldn't trust these to do the same!
I have purchased the A5 pant in a couple of styles several times over the last couple of years. My most recent purchase of 2 pair of the Utility pant was disappointing. The fabric was much lighter. Worse, the edges of the pockets on both pair were quite frayed, a surprising defect for a The North Face product.
Here's a few of the negative things I've noticed with these pants, light weight material, frayed edges around the pocket and length issues. Utility pants are usually more roomy, but these pants run so short that it makes them feel uncomfortable fitting. I'm 6' and the regular size length (32") is suppose to be long enough but it just doesn't feel right. I think if they where a little more baggier in size and had a boot cut for extra room they would be "perfect". I do like the softness of the material, what a shame in this style north face. I'll be returning them this coming week.
I'd never wear these on a winter camping trip, but they're great summer weight pants (think berry picking thorn protection or a poison ivy shield when you can't wear shorts). I wore them watching the 2007 Boston Marathon, and even though I got drenched and the pants were soaked through, I was still very comfortable, and they dried very quickly.
These are a light weight pant that are really comfortable to wear. The only down side is that they do run a short inseam. Hang dry em or they will shrink. Or upsize.
I got a pair of these to kick around in. Don't trust them for much more heavy duty use. The fit and appearance are nice. I would get a pair of mountain khakis or Carhartts instead and get twice the life out of them.
I torn a pair of jeans and bought these is a pinch. I have bought two other pairs and all are still in great share. The material used in these pants is great. It is highly abrasion resistant and they look great. Also for the price they are a great value. I can maybe understand some people don't like change. I think they are great and I don't think a company like The North Face would put out a new version of a product without it being an improved version. I wear a 32 inch inseam and the reg length fit me fine. Very satisfied with the price comfort and fit of these pants.
