22 Designs Hammerhead Telemark Binding - 2007

Get versatile, powerful flex with TwentyTwo Designs' HammerHead telemark binding. The two-inch spring easily adjusts to five dramatically different positions, giving the range you need for steep climbs and crazy descents. Leave the spring in its neutral setting during climbs, and preload it for powerful carves during descents. You get a responsive flex that puts the power to the edges of the ski when you drop a knee. TwentyTwo Designs made the toe piece with a six-hold mounting pattern that won't pull out and leave you walking out of the backcountry. Rocker launch, which is caused by stiff plastic boots flexing only across the toes, is virtually eliminated with the HammerHead's powerful underfoot cable routing and long toe piece. The HammerHead can be adjusted to fit any size boot without tools.

Bottom Line: TwentyTwo Designs' Hammerhead Binding is made to stand up to today's hard-charging tele skiers. Rip with confidence.

Strong

By:
November 7, 2008

These bindings are some of the most durable on the market. So durable 22 Designs doesn't even offer a backcountry kit for them. The five different positions range from freeflex to super stiff. These bindings fit any size boot and are held in by six screws instead of the normal four. These bindings are super solid and supply a very efficient transfer of power to the ski. Overall these bindings rock inbounds and do well out of bounds, though they are not the best touring binding.

I am a beginning telemarker and am thinking of buying a pair of BD havocs 175, what binding would you recommend? I am 5'10'' 150 lbs and have T2 scarpas. What is the difference between the o1, o2, o3? how do they compare with the 22 designs hammerhead

I would do just the opposite. I have skied more than fifty days on both the O1's and the Hammerheads. The Hammerheads offer WAY more control. I cannot stress how much more control it is. For the argument of switching cartridges on the O1/O2 the Hammerhead has five different positions that don't cost $50 to switch.

Having skied both, I'd recommend the O2. They're more versatile for a beginner than the Hammerheads, and when you get better you can swap out cartridges instead of having to buy a whole new binding. The O3 is similar to a G3 binding, with the cartridges on the side of the boot, but that doesn't allow for as smooth a turn as the O2 or Hammerhead, where the cables run under the boot. The O1 is simply the O2 with a touring mode, but it's a lot more expensive so I wouldn't get that unless you're planning on doing a lot of hiking.

bomber design, great lateral control, adjustable tension. how sweet. these are such burly bindings!! They pair up great with a t1 or t-race, havocs or piste pipes. This binding is not light, but it won't break. I was tired of replacing my cracked/broken g3 cables. And now I have more torsional control and can dial my binding up to be more active. I just wish it was a 4 hole pattern to fit my skis with inserts...

Love them

By:
March 17, 2009

I have tried G3's, Voile Switchbacks, BD O1's and Bomber Bishop's and so far I like these the best. For the backcountry I use BD O1's and also love them, especially the touring mode, but for the resort I love the Hammerheads. I have them mounted on the 22 Design's adaptor plate because I didn't want to drill extra holes that wouldn't be compatible with other bindings and it has worked great so far. I love the adjustability. Can notch them up tight to feel like the Bishop's or loose more like the mid-stiff carts on the O1's for the powder (and thus can reduce tip-dive). They are even great for parallel turns. The climbing wire is 'spring-loaded' and very easy to flip up and down. Why can't all wires be this easy? My only complaint is that sometimes I can hear a 'squeak' from the cables when dropping the knee.

Doubt I'll ever use anything else for the resort. If the Axl ends up being light then may even consider switching my back country set-up.

Dude, do you have custom Chippewa telemark boots? I've never heard of such a thing, I though that Chippewa only made hiking/work/motorcycle boots. These bindings fit 75mm duckbill tele boots, which is the standard toe that all tele boots (except NTN) have on them.

Awesome binding.

By:
February 2, 2009

The Hammerheads are hard to beat for powerful, active, responsive turns. The torsional stability is top-notch and the ability to change the response of the binding is nice, even if it is difficult at times. Also, the bomber construction instills confidence that the binding isn't going to disintegrate when you really lay into it. They're also competitively light and while they're not dedicated to touring, the HammerHeads are wonderfully versatile.

after breaking 2 rottefella cobras up Griz Gulch, i went to an AT setup that day. my bro and buddies convinced me to take another shot with hammerheads...
frickin rad. amazing response and power to the ski. i ski 110 underfoot, no problems turning with these bindings. just spent 4 nights in MT yurting, had trouble moving positions after they fill up with snow, not so stoked on that so looking forward to new alx model. still figuring out my fav. position. 5 is a bit much in deep powder, but gave up moving them around unless they are warm at home.

Durable and versatile. I use this binding mainly for resort skiing and in a neutral position. It seems like most people purchase this binding for its active feeling but I prefer the neutral feel similar to a G3 Targa. I prefer it over the Targa because it is indestructible and it engages the spring immediately to allow instant resistance for boot flex unlike the Targa because the cable is routed underfoot instead of on the side. In addition, the toe box holds the boot in place very well and allows you to make very strong turns.

Nothing Beats It

By:
February 10, 2009

I started out telemarking on both G3 and Rottefella bindings. After trying the Hammerheads, I will never use another binding, EVER!! They are absolutely bomb proof! Plus being able to change the pivot point of the binding in less than a minute (even on a cold day on the slopes) is key to adapting to changing snow conditions. On powder days I like it free with lots of feel, so I use the 2nd position. When it hasn't snow for a week and I want to rip the groomers, I use the 4th position. For touring, no one makes a stronger heel piece and the bindings can be used on the 1st position, or if you want it really free, get cable extensions (not the million piece moving parts, gonna break on the way down BD touring kit). What else can I say besides there is nothing that bends and sends it like the Hammerheads.

Durable & Responsive

By:
January 29, 2009

Responsive. Great power transition. No maintenance. Great durability. Skied the old Rainey models for years, then got the new 22 Designs update. Still great - if you want unmatched power and control, put em on setting four and watch how easily you can crush the gnarliest bump line or control GS turns. Then again, put em on setting 1 or 2 and take quick sidecountry tours thru deep pow. Not a touring set-up in principal, but definitely my favorite tele binding. Looking forward to trying 22 Designs new free-pivot HH model.

Hammerheads = Power

By:
January 2, 2007

I am a big tele skier, 6'2", 225 lbs. I have been searching for a powerful ski / binding combination. The Hammerheads match perfectly with my Havocs. Hammerheads allow me to carve through crude (setting 4), maintain stability at high speeds, and keep the ski under boot on killer descents. Can't wait to give them a try in the backcountry.

Hammerheads Rule!

By:
December 3, 2008

Why would anybody ski anything else but Hammerheads? I have had BD, Voile, and Karhus, but they all suck! The HHs are what everything else is measured by; the tension, the lateral stability, the forefoot power, the edge control, the on-hill adjustability and, if they ever create a fully releasable version - well my friend, it would be the convergence of everything great and beautiful in the universe. There would be rainbows, free tram rides, pit-deep pow, and brazen young ladies from adult films handing out beer at the bottom of each clean line. But until then, screw that NTN system, it's just a floppy acid-dropped cartridge changer on steroids, somewhere between a Bishop Bomber and a Hammerhead. I have had Hammerheads on four different skis, with Scarpa T1s, and it will take something extraordinary for me to switch back. Until then I will stay in the 5th hole and keep up on my monthly health insurance premiums - just in case my knee blows.

When you come out of them, do tou have to readjust the length to put them back on? I had a simalar problem that turned out to be the "springy thing" length adjusters were pulling out of the yoke that wraps around your heal. (the yoke is threaded) A call to 22 designs comfirmed that they had a run of bindings produced with insuffincient depth of threads. They promptly sent me no charge replacements and all has been rosy. These were my 2nd pair and I'm working on converting all my equipment over to hh and hopefully the new axl's to replace my 01's. Don't give up on them. They are the best bindings out there!

The best tele binding bar none

By:
May 30, 2007

Absolutely the most adjustable binding on the market and the binding that offers the most ski control. I can't believe the control you gain of your back ski with these things when turning - and that is only with the cable set in position 3! And the long front wings just sock your boot toe to the ski like its superglued in there - no more lateral movement of your boot. Buy these and go out and hammer!

I've recently purchased a pair of fat rockered skis (125+ mm under foot), and have received varying opinions on the tourability of such a ski. I do own other skis that have free pivots bindings for backcountry skiing. Given that information, which binding would be more appropriate and more important ski better for such a ski, the BD 01 or the Hammerhead?

I have both BD 01s and Hammerheads, and prefer the Hammerheads in terms of performance. However the easy switch to touring mode on the BD 01s is a definite advantage in the backcountry. The pinholes which control the resistance on the Hammerheads are easily clogged with snow and ice after a tour, and can be a real pain in the a** when switching from position 1 back to an active setting. I'd go with the BD O1s on this one...

The upgrade from Rainey Superloops on Piste Stinx to the Hammerhead on Headrushes has been surreal. I'm a 5'4" woman and I got the G3 Barons with 22

I'm a 5'4" woman and I got the G3 Barons with 22 Designs HammerHead bindings last year for Christmas, but they're just a little to big for me to feel totally comfortable on. Unfortunately the shortest length the skis come in is a 170 and that's what I have so I can't change them for smaller ones :( I demo'd the G3 Siren's last year and loved them so I have already found my new skis. So I am planning on selling my Baron's, with the bindings. My question, now, is How much is a decent price to ask for the skis with bindings? (Bearing in mind that they are 2 years old and originally demos). They are in fairly great condition since I could not use them much last year, and they were in very good condition when I got them.

The Hammerhead Secret

By:
November 7, 2008

I have hammerheads on most of my quiver (Karhu Team 100s, Jak BCs, Line Darksides) and I love them for their durability, their simplicity and the way they can be tuned. For the uphill, I move the pivot forward and life is as good as my legs and lungs will let it be. For resort-boarding the crud, I put the pivot back a couple of notches and I'm railing turns. But here's my deep, dark secret: The Hammerheads let me do it with relatively soft, light boots. They're so beefy, you can ski hard in boot that's not a total foot vise. For me, that's sweet because I have an unnatural love for my ten-year-old Scarpas. I tried the whole T1 setup a few years back and it just wasn't for me. With the Hammerheads and soft snow, break out the light boots and give a try. I used to lust after every new telemark binding that came out -- now I'm happy with the Hammerhead. Although a release would be nice. Hmm...

I have a pair from a few years ago but it looks like it's the same mechanism--you need to take off the ski but you can do it on the slope. You just need to push in the pin (you can do it with the tip of your pole) and slide a metal piece forward or backward. On the hill it's a bit tough because of built up ice and snow--I usually use my other pole to push the metal piece. There are 2 pieces to slide on each binding. I have found overall it takes maybe 3 or 4 minutes to take the skis off, adjust both bindings, and put them back on.

November 29, 2006

This year they are black and look sweet on the Black Diamond Verdict. I love these bindings and so does everyone I have ever spoken with who has skied them. Again, another product designed by folks who tele. With 5 positions you can either shift them to tour or to race without compromising any functionality on either position. Not only that but they are bomber...I have put these bindings through the ringer and the strong, simple design wins every time. Ever had snow get stuck in your pivot tele bindings? Frustrating isn't it? That doesn’t happen with these. They're sicky.

Skied with my Hammerhead bindings in deep powder (yeah we've got that out East). The only problem I had is the accumulation of snow/ice on the sides of the bindings under my boots. I didn't have this problem with my 2003 Hammerheads; it looks as if the metal isn't "polished" (smoothen over) so the snow accumulates on the sides of the bindings.
The temperature was 3 degrees F and the snow was dry and fluffly.
Other than that I'm satisfied with the product

I got to demo these recently. First run, I was sent out there with these on the 5th position, or most stiff. My 145 pound frame had a tough time muscling them around. Got down to the bottom and had the setting changed to the second position. Wow. In the second position these thing were awesome. They give a nice consistent flex throughout the turn. Very smooth. They gave power to my edges but they were not over powering. I didn't want to take them off. So the 5 positions make a big difference. This is the next tele binding I will get .

Durable, incredibly powerful, the perfect complement for an aggressive skiing style and big skis. You never see anyone who sucks skiing on Hammerheads. Everyone raves about their O1s, but the damn things break ALL the time. Hammerheads, with the six screw mount can hold up to the abuse that an aggressive knee-dropper will put them through. They're definitely more resort oriented (switching the pins from free pivot to resistance mode is a real pain in the ass), but they CHARGE once you're going downhill. I'm never skiing another binding ever.
