22 Designs Hammerhead Telemark Binding - 2005

Twenty-two Designs' HammerHead Binding is a versatile and powerful telemark binding. The two-inch spring is easily adjusted to five dramatically different positions that change the flex of the binding. Leave the spring in its neutral setting during climbs, and preload it for powerful carves during descents. You get a responsive flex that puts the power to the edges of the ski when you drop a knee. Twenty-two Designs made the toepiece with a six-hold mounting pattern that won't pull out and leave you walking out of the backcountry. Rocker launch, which is caused by stiff plastic boots flexing only across the toes, is virtually eliminated with the HammerHead's powerful underfoot cable routing and long toepiece. The HammerHead can be adjusted to fit any size boot without tools.

Bottom Line: The Hammerhead Binding is made to stand up to today's hard-charging tele skiers. Rip with confidence.

Hammerheads

I've skied on Hammerhead Bindings for the past five years. This year our family has added three new pairs to outfit the whole crew. Our cabin partners also bought Hammerheads after skiing on mine (and demoing skis with G3's).

These are the best tele bindings out there! The toe pressure on the trailing ski provides superior control in the tele turn.

However, I grew up as an alpine skier and still make a lot of parallel turns - especially in powder. For the parallel skier, the Hammerheads are awesome. Set the pivot in position four and the binding holds your boot very close to the ski and is the closest thing to an alpine binding you can have without locking down the heel.

I skied on several demo skis this year that were mounted with G3 bindings. They worked well, but cannot touch the Hammerhead which provides more toe pressure, better heal hold down, and better control.

The Hammerheads are also indestructible. My oldest pair are about 5 years old and going strong. The one-piece toe is bomber and mates to the Nordic-norm toe of the boot very tightly.

Our cabin partner recently mounted Hammerheads on his new K2 Work Stinx. He used the mounting adapters that allow you to mount the hammerheads using the K2 inserts. This worked like a charm and provides the ability to adjust the mounting position forward/backward by using different holes in the adapter plate as well as the two (or three) different inserts in the skis. This is a great feature as it allows you to dial in the mounting position without drilling holes in the skis.

Teton Pass - Represent

Pros-
* Adjustable cable setting for touring and skiing
* Heel riser is lifted, for quick and easy adjustment
* Shoe horn, to help get fitted in the bindings quicker

Cons -
* It seems like there is a lot of time management with these bindings.
* It is very odd to get used to one centric spring, rather then two cartridges
(they take the Cannondale shock approach to skiing)

Hammerhead delivers!

By:

Pros: dial in the binding to be active or neutral in 5 positions, strong and well-built, boots flex through turns very smoothly.
Cons: wants to eat your duckbills, anti-ice tape doesn't seem to stick to anything

Hammerwhat?

Didn't get off to a good start with these. First day, both bindings released in a high speed GS turn after putting them through a good pounding in some bumps and crud. Set in #4 stiff position. Seems to be some 'break-in' period for the main spring with lots of spring travel. Second day, deep powder turns binding releases in mid turn. I adjusted the throws to what felt like a very positive snap on closure. Major caveat are the helicoil springs that adjust the heel throw size and tension can kink and make it difficult to adjust further. After two days of skiing I can't tighten the throw past a certain point and seems to have rendered it unusable since I keep popping out. As for the pivot points, once adjusted they are nice to have a more active binding. 3 of the 4 pivots worked fine, one was very sticky and left me wondering, would I want to mess with this up on a ridge top? Are there any replacement parts/backcountry kit?
