The North Face Impulse 1/4-Zip Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's - 2008
Thanks to a zip front, The North Face Men's Long-Sleeve Impulse ¼ Zip Jersey lets you regulate your temperature throughout your morning runs and fall-weather hikes. This polyester and elastane VaporWick shirt creates loft while wicking moisture, so you feel comfortable and dry all day long. The Impulse ¼ Zip Jersey's antimicrobial treatment keeps you from smelling like you just got back from a month long expedition in the Himalayas. Stash your car or house key in the back pocket.
Bottom Line: A front zipper on The North Face Impulse Zip Jersey lets you dump heat quickly on your runs, bike rides, hikes, and climbs.
I'll admit it--I am not winter runner like most of the other reviewers for this shirt. Although it seems that is the shirt's intended function (being part of the Flight Series and all), it does perform wonderfully as synthetic long sleeve shirt. Most of the time I wear it as light midlayer while hiking. The fit is not too tight as to prevent one from wearing a base under it.
As a tall person (6'5"), I appreciate the long sleeves, and can comfortably use the thumb holes.
The Impulse was my main running shirt this winter. The thumb loops were great for days that were almost cold enough for gloves, but not quite. I stashed my ID in the zip pocket and cruised the trails.
It also is a great baselayer. The thumb holes kept the shirt in place during layer adjustments and added a little extra warmth to gloves. It feels smooth against skin and all the seams are flat (read: no chafing). The Impulse runs small, for TNF. I'm 5'10" 145lbs and the medium is perfect.
I must admit, TNF has made some good gear in the Summit Series and Flight Series lines. I hadn't bought any North Face stuff since the Denali became the one article of clothing that every high school girl had to have.
This shirt is good! Highly recommended! Very comfortable by itself... has a coolness about it in mild weather, but a warmth in a cool breeze. As a base layer under a jacket... it is very comfortable, temperature wise (and texture-wise against skin). Breast pocket comes in handy as a quick stash (cell phone, etc), it also works as another source to unzip and let some heat out! I plan to get another one!
I ordered this to run and bike in cooler weather. It works fantastically for that, but if it's clean it is the first thing my girlfriend will grab out of my closet. I suppose there are worse things right?
Anyways, the thumb loops are great and the pockets are just the right size for keys or ID's. The construction is solid. Overall, it's just a great "heavy" shirt if you can keep it from the clutches of a chilly girlfriend.
I had a chance to use this for the first time the other day. I love it its comfortable for jogging in and it has 2 pockets with slots to lead your headphone cord up the back of the shirt. Highly recommended.
The small was small enough, which I was worried about. I dig the thumb-holes. It's got a nice slim cut, but doesn't squeeze you like some. The colors are rad. Very comfortable to run in.
ONE THING THOUGH:
Do not wear this before washing it. I washed it in the sink before putting it on and the water turned Dark Yellow (I assume from sizing or pesticide or whatnot). It was scary. It took about 8 full rinses before the water started getting clear. Yikes.
I haven't had problems with unraveling yet though I hand wash and hang dry all my bicycle gear. However I have found that this shirt is great for XC biking in Japan during the fall season. It wicks sweat quick and allows air to flow on the important parts of the upper body.
