The North Face Deception Jacket feels so light and soft that you might hesitate to grab it when the forecast is calling for a deep freeze, but Gore Windstopper combined with Primaloft One insulation make this ski jacket deceptively warm even on cold-smoke January mornings. Add in a powder skirt, pass clip, RECCO reflector, internal goggle and media pockets, and the Deception becomes a no-brainer for anyone ripping up the Continental Range in mid-winter. Or let it be your pre-dawn skin track companion, and pack a super-light hardshell for changing conditions.
I don't think that it has that feature - I've got this jacket, however, I have never really found it to get in the way when I haven't been using it. Another option if you don't like snowskirts is the North Face Redpoint Optimus Jacket- very similar (not quite as long, not Windstopper), without the snowskirt. Hope this helps-
Check this jacket out. I bought this jacket to replace a beat up Redpoint Optimus and it has been a great replacement. Same great hood and insulation package, but with the additional benefits of Windstopper, longer length, and snow skirt. Great value.
When it's below 0 degrees F, in Northern Michigan is this coat going to keep him warm? He does not like bulky coats. Or can you give me a thought on another coat?
Honestly, with a good long sleeve shirt underneath, you should be fine. This jacket is 100% windproof so that the insulation warms you up, as opposed to breaking the wind as well (losing heat retention). Its my go-to jacket for "COLD AS F***" ski days. I have a MHW Phantom too, but cut a bit short and not as durable as the Deception.
I've used this jacket for a month now and it's been exactly what I was looking for -lightly insulated jacket that I could use on semi-cold days when a full down jacket would be overkill. The only change I would make to the design of this jacket would be to change the cuffs from elastic cuffs to open cuffs with a velcro enclosure so that they can fit over my ski gloves. Other than that, it was a nice pick up.
I have the TNF Deception jacket now and believe I have tried the Redpoint as well, but have never owned it. Dave's reasons listed above are right on. The jacket is very light and also surprisingly warm. I live in Minnesota and the Windstopper is great to have in January/February when wind chills are high. It's listed as a ski jacket but I've never tried it for that. Have been mostly wearing it around town with a variety of base layers and have been very satisfied by the warmth and weight. The snow skirt is a good feature but it makes the fit pretty tight across the stomach for some reason. The way the hood tightens would be perfect if you're wearing a helmet, but as for everyday use, it's not ideal. The hood fit (when tightened) would be my only real complaint. Otherwise, great jacket.
I've had both, and here is why I like the Deception the best: -waterproof zip has an updated look -longer length -snow skirt -all of these and Windstopper for $50
I think the jackets are pretty close in terms of durability. The Redpoint's one advantage is probably using a ripstop face fabric where the Deception does not. All things considered I like the cut, looks, and feature set of the Deception better.
This jacket is one of the warmest things to ski in ever. The Primaloft mixed with the Windstopper make for a super warm, super mobile piece that you can ride in with just a baselayer under. Its awesome. It does, however, not have Pant-a-locks like I expected.. north face should fix that up. Oh, and the screen printing is awesome on the inside. If you want a warm jacket for the Rockies, this is it!
Throw on a baselayer and this jacket and you're pretty much good to go, it's extremely lightweight, but it's a great windstopper and the snow skirt will keep the powder out and you warm and dry.
How durable is the fabric of this jacket? I've had several ripstop nylon shells over the years and each and every one has torn quite easily. Is this jacket built to take more abuse?
it's way more durable than you'd think. i'm always wearing this jacket and it's never torn or even scratched up. when i first got it i worried about tearing because it's so light and soft. i've climbed stone walls and fallen on gravel and been suprised by the durability- it's never an issue. great jacket.
