If you tend to get cold on the slopes, and you don't want a down jacket that soaks up every drop of moisture, look to The North Face Women's Tempest Down Jacket. A waterproof breathable shell blocks moisture, 600-fill down keeps you cozy, and a powder skirt keeps snow on the slopes. The North Face added a removable faux fur lining to the hood for a bit of casual style. This warm, puffy jacket's long length keeps you covered on the ski hill, and Underarm zips help you dump heat after a hard run. The North Face included a Recco avalanche rescue reflector to help aid ski patrol in the event of a slide.
Bottom Line: For the coldest, wettest days of the season.
I just moved to Syracuse, NY, which is going to be below zero most of the winter. Will this jacket keep me warm enough? I will be walking to school most days in these sub-zero temps. Thank you for any answers!
I think this jacket will be warm enough, and this is great looking jacket. Another jacket to consider for straight cold temperature commutes would be The North Face Nuptse Jacket. I think either one would work great.
This coat is interesting because it has 600 down and so many features and at the same time it is a tight fit although that is part of the whole ski coat fashion. It is very warm and I prefer to not wear layers or thick clothing under because I will be uncomfortable. My opinion is based on the fact that I am a full figured woman when it comes to hips and bottom. Coat comes under waist which is warming as well.
I actually got this jacket last year in a different color and when I saw it this year in the green I had to get it. My husband makes fun of me for having the same coat in two different colors but I'll tell you what, I work at a ski resort and get cold super easy. I don't wear too many layers under and get lots of compliments on the color and style. The sleeves may seem a little bulky at first but after wearing it a few times the are normal. I love buying things through backcountry! They have some of the best customer service around and will continue to buy from them as long as I need to.
Write your question here...What size should I order? I am 5'8" and I have broad shoulders which makes me in between M and L. I would like to be able to wear a sweater under the jacket what size should I get?
I got this and returned it. I'm 5 7 and anytime I sat down or moved too much it rode up my back and as warm as the rest of me was, that cold air on your low back just ruins it. Way too short. I had a M and a L was too big. If you have a long back or torso I wouldn't recommend it.
I am 5'3" 120 lbs. I like jackets to be fitted. I have a Northface girls size L and like the fit. I want this coat but can't decide between S and XS. I would probably wear something like a small fleece or long sleeve underneath. Which way to go?
I don't normally wear winter coats, but hoodies and jackets just don't cut it anymore! I spent weeks searching at malls and online stores, printing out countless styles of N.F. Coats, I almost bought a tri climate, but thank goodness I didn't! This coat is better than I expected. The down keeps me extremely warm, yet I have no problem wearing it indoors. The inside of the pockets are even warm, so if my hands get cold, I can easily warm them up. The hood is awesome for keeping the cold air away from my face and ears.
The only thing I find annoying is sometimes I feel restricted while driving because it is so thick, but other than that it's great!
If you like to wear jackets/hoodies under your coat like me, be sure to go up a size so it fits comfortably!
I'm not sure what size jacket to order. I'm just over 5'6'' and 127 lbs. I typically wear a small in North Face and like my jackets fitted, but I don't want the arms or length to be too short and I'd like to be able to wear a medium weight sweater underneath. Should I stick with a small or order up a size?
I'm allergic to down (e.g down pillows and comforters), but I really want the warmth of a down jacket. Do you think the down in this jacket will bother me or is it made in such a way that it won't?
I was trying to figure out the same thing - finally did --- The Tempest is shorter, because it is like a bomber jacket - the bottom is similar to the Gotham jacket - it has a band at the bottom, (like sleeve cuffs), even though you can't really tell that from the picture. It is long for this type of jacket, but the La Fonda is longer; it is a straight jacket, a little fitted so it is more figure flattering, and it covers the hips.
Usually when you buy a coat you have to decide whether you want to look cute, or you want to be warm. This coat has both so you don't have to trade off. Favorite jacket, and I know I will have it for years!!
No they are not the same. The pockets are styled different and the La Fonda is longer in the torso. The Tempest is also more waterproof and has a avalanche locator.
I ordered this jacket 2 (yes, only 2) days ago and received it already...and it is perfect! I am moving to Wisconsin this fall and thought I would take advantage of the sale, since this is the style I liked, and it is going to be great! It is so warm and it doesn't make me look like a marshmallow! I can't wait to use it for snowboarding and just hanging out! It runs true to size and will be roomy enough to wear sweaters with. Great jacket!
This jacket fits great! The arms are a little long, but I folded them back. I am a large woman, so I needed a 14-16 size. Not many jackets come that big these days. It is very warm, also. It will good for skiing with the big hood.
I am 5'4", size 8 and I orignally ordered a size L. But that was too long in the arms and torso as well as too much material around the shoulders and chest. So Backcountry cheerfully exchanged for a Medium which fits very nicely all around & with room underneath to comfortably fit a hoodie on the extra cold days. Although... this is a VERY warm jacket. I must say though, that in the picture above it looks a little fitted through the waist but it is definitely not. I also found it a little thick on the cuffs to get my mittens over top if that matters to anybody. But that's minor. Very toasty, nice fabric - it repelled the water very well. For my height I did not find the jacket too long at all. It rested about hip length on my 5'4" and kept my back nicely covered. I ordered the green which matched nicely with my Burton Dublin green pants.
This is a very warm, sport coat. It endures the cold, wet weather wonderfully! The water just rolls right off of it. Talk about waterproof, fantastic for all your winter outdoor needs.
This alone won't be warm enough. With the right layering under it might be OK. This jacket isn't exactly windproof either so if it is windy, that could be a real problem.
This is the warmest, most lightweight jacket I have ever worn. I do usually wear a Medium and I took a small in this, could probably have gone x-small but it is the best coat. It is very comfortable and I am toasty warm in it. The company is the best, quick shipment and the return policy is the best. They credited my card for my return within just a day of recieving it, that NEVER happens!
Not intended to be drycleaned. Here is the care: "for hood, must remove from jacket, and hand or machine wash warm, gentle cycle. Do not bleach. Do not iron or dryclean".
Does this coat really run snug? North Face is always HUGE on me, and I don't want to order the wrong size. XS jackets are usually just fine, but if it runs snug... hmmmmm... can someone help me out?
I LOVE this jacket!! I found this jacket on Backcountry.com after much searching! They not only offered the best price but they had the color I wanted, Park Green! The jacket is very warm and comfortable. It also gives a really nice fit for those of us ladies that have curves! I would recommend this jacket to any female who wants to not only be really really warm but who also wants to look cute doing it! Thanks BackCountry!!!
I live in Las Vegas...so everyone thinks its hot here not cold. We get below freezing in the winter on a regular basis. Well...the buyers for our stores are out to lunch because its next to impossible to find a warm coat in our stores. Is this as warm as it says and will it repel water cause it even rains here...sometimes! I need a warm coat!!!
This coat is super warm because of the 600 fill down and is great for the cold winds you experience in vegas. Im not sure how much it rains there, but this coat will repell something like 10,000 mm, whereas a fabric like gortex is 30,000 mm waterproof(the higher the number the more waterproof). Gortex is however not warm. So if you are looking for a super-warm jacket with light waterproofing duties, this jacket is awesome. I've worn it in below freezing, and windy conditions in both whistler canada and in the sierra mountains, and it has served me well. Plus its super cute!
a pit zip is a zipper that runs under the arm and has mesh on the inside, you can unzip it when you get a bit overheated and it allows for more airflow and ventilation.
