Super-tight ski pants aren't very practical, or comfortable. The North Face made the Women's Insulated Freedom Pants with a relaxed, contemporary fit, so you can actually bend your knees on the slopes without feeling like you're going to bust a seam. Thanks to low-bulk synthetic insulation, you can drop the long johns most days, or layer up for a super warm system when temps dip below 0F. The Insulated Freedom Pants' fully taped seams and waterproof breathable HyVent fabric encourage you to brave the harshest elements. Mesh panels in the leg gaiters work with the thigh vents to create full-leg air circulation as you charge down the slopes.
Bottom Line: The North Face Women's Insulated Freedom Pant, with liberty and powder stashes for all.
I have to agree with some of the other reviews that the pants do seem a little high-waisted, especially since most of us are now used to a more modern fit that sits lower on the waist. I do appreciate that the waist is adjustable though. I'm 5'9" and bought the Medium Long. I thought for a size 10/12 it was a little snug, but perhaps that was because of the high waist. The length was great - another 1/2 inch or so would have been perfect, but these pants are still better than anything else I've found for my height. I wore a fleece pant under these and I was too hot. I would suggest just a light layer. These pants leave plenty of room for movement, but are not baggy.
I love North Face Ski pants. They are high-quality, strong seams, keep you dry even if you sit in the snow a few times. I wear these skiing and snowboarding, and they are very comfortable. Love the extra cargo pocket to throw in a lock and neck warmer. I'm 5'8", 145 lbs. The size Large/Regular fits great. This is my 3rd pair of North Face ski pants and I will definitely buy more. Love their jackets too.
You indeed seem to be right between sizes. These pants are not especially fitted, so the medium may work out. To be safe, I'd measure your actual waist and compare to the sizing chart. If your waist is over 29.5", I'd go with the large.
I bought these and the boot-cut version to try both on and ended up keeping the boot-cut ones. These have more of a men's fit in my opinion. I say this because I have another pair lighter-weight North Face pants and they are actually a men's small and fit very similarly--higher waist and straighter shape all around. The boot-cut version, in my opinion, have a much more flattering shape for women and feel like a regular pair of pants instead of a bulky pair of snow pants. So, I guess it's personal preference. I'm 5'6" and 140 lbs, usually wear a size 6 or small and the small/reg fit perfectly. I ended up with a medium in the boot-cut b/c the small was out of stock (everywhere!) in the color i wanted and the waist tabs adjust to make them fit pretty well.
I just received these pants. They fit fine (I got the Small/long - I'm 5'7.5" & around 133 lbs), but I think I like them in the boot-cut version better. I recently tried on the boot-cut in a local store prior to receiving these pants. The boot-cut fit me better and felt more comfortable. These pants are too baggy for me from the knee down - the boot-cut version had a all-around better fit. These still look good, so I probably will keep them since I'm too lazy to return.
Write your question here...I have the Freedom pant in Ladies' short medium--bittersweet brown. It is too large and I am trying to find it in short small--is there any hope? Thank you.TMH
It might be tough to find them this season. I would start looking early for next season - maybe even as early as July when these pants start shipping. That is a very niche size, so I would recommend looking early.
My wife is leggy and lean (5'9" 125#). Problem getting good fit, thought solved with availability of "long" sizes for TNF Freedoms, but these are too short AND too loose in Small Long, OK in waist/hips but WAY too short in XS Long. Bought both, tried on both, returned both. I got the Men's last year with no complaints.
I got a great deal on these at my local box sporting goods store. I went there just to try some on, planning to buy online, but I found a pair discounted to 40% of the MSRP. They are the Snow White color and the hems were a little dirty, so they had been marked down because it looked like they had been worn and returned. I'm about 5'4" and 125lbs (normally a size 4 or 6 in pants), and the small fits me perfectly. The waist fits well without being tight, and the length is perfect. I haven't worn them out yet, but my roommate owns these in black and loves them. The only feature I'd like is gaiters that tighten, but it's hard to complain at the price I found!
Will they fit over a large calf, boot and bootheater? I am having an impossible time getting womens pants that will fit a racers leg with a boot heater on the back.
These are my favorite ski pants, by far. They fit well...I am 5'2" and 120# and the xs, short fit just right. They are warm even without an underlayer, but not bulky, and have room to fit another layer if you want on super-cold days. I have boot warmers that stick out and the leg has plenty of room to accomodate them. I plan to buy another pair soon. thanks bc.com!
Do the bottoms have any zip? Is it easy enough to fit them over a ski or snowboard boot? My old pants zipped and I would slip the gator over, then slide the zipper down and it was awesome. I see these have a gator - cool. How is it with fitting over though?
I bought a pair last year that I ended up having to return because I got the wrong size, but those did not zip. They are plenty roomy in the leg to fit over a boot and have built in gaiters to keep the snow out.
My daughter is 5' 6'' 105 lbs. and thought we were doing well with the xs, but must agree the sizing runs larger than we expected. We are not returning until we visit the local ski shop because the pants are fantastic style and made well. Her trip is end of Jan. so if we don't find something locally she can make do with the pulling of cords to size them better. Such a nice pant we don't want to return them!!!
i've worn these on some cold, wet, and windy days with minimal baselayers and haven't gotten chilly or damp on the bottom half... would definitely recommend for east coast skiers!
Finally - ski pants for someone that is 5ft. I ordered the S/short and love them already. The insulation will keep me toasty warm with zippers to cool off some.
The only pair I found even close to being long enough. They fit me perfectly and I have a 33 1/2" inseam. I ordered the XS long. I love them!! Warm but not bulky.
I am 5'8" and it is difficult to find pants that are long enough and comfortable enough to wear all day. I bought these in Small/Long and they were great; comfortable yet not bulky. I loved the zip thigh vents which helped me to not get overheated while skiing. They were also great for snowmobiling! Only thing I was not crazy about was the velcro adjustable waist, but I can see the benefit of them to adjust the waist in and out as needed - just rubbed my side a bit. I would purchase again, though, as they were very comfortable.
This is my first North Face purchase. I really enjoyed these pants. We went skiing in single digit temps with a brisk wind and I was toasty warm with long underwear and a light pair of pants underneath! I like the fit - even though I'm almost 40 I hate wearing pants that make me look like a fat old lady - these definitely had a more fitted style. The next time I need winter gear I'll be checking out North Face again!
I only wear it when I am skiing~~~ It's really warm and waterproof. Also, the pockets can hold my cell phone, camera, wallet and tissues. You know, my nose is running all the time~
I went skiing for the 1st time and these pants were great! But I have a couple of comments - Size runs big. I thought I was a large based on the sizing chart and others' views that ski pants fit snug but these were just too big. Had to wear a pair of shorts underneath so that they would stay up. Also high waisted pants are in the past. These should be a more modern fit.
Other than that, loved the colour and style and it kept me warm throughout the week. Did not even need a base layer
I think these run a little large. I usually wear small but had put on a few pounds so I bought a medium in these. They were way to big though. I ended up returning them and buying a medium in another brand.
I've tried to find warm pants to garden in during the winter for years. These fit the bill. They are wind/water proof, and allow me to bend and crawl around without discomfort. I bought the Large/Short, since I am a Size 14 and 69 years old, and they fit perfectly. Not your expected use, but a good one, none the less.
The small was too big, so I exchanged for the XS in another brand. Customer Svc got the order wrong and sent me these in XS instead; I like them anyway. The adjustable velcro waist tabs make these pants incredibly versatile. I prefer to be optimally covered, as well, since I have a hard time staying warm and usually need down-filled outer wear.
Just ordered my second pair of these. The first pair lasted me 8 ski seasons with many washings before they started to lose their waterproofing. They are a little high-waisted for me and I think the sizing has gotten bigger over the years. But still an awesome all-around snow pant!
