The North Face Triumph Anorak - Men's - 2008

By using a unique two-panel construction, The North Face was able to remove every unnecessary seam from the Men's Triumph Anorak and lower its weight to an incredible 5.4oz. This pullover includes only a single chest pocket and no other features. Zippers and pockets add weight, and The North Face knows that you'd rather shave ounces from your gear than have a bunch of fancy features. Not only does the Triumph Anorak's waterproof breathable HyVent DT fabric protect you from a torrential downpour, it also includes a grid interior to channel moisture from your body and increase breathability.

Bottom Line: Good luck finding a waterproof breathable jacket lighter than The North Face Triumph Anorak.

Amazing jacket- that also happens to be 5.5oz!

If you're looking for a super light weight rain shell to take for a speed or endurance assault on pretty much anything, this jacket is it- it's simply amazing. I bought it as strictly a super light rain shell for endurance hiking but have found its usefulness has far exceeded this, proving valuable as a wind shell as well.

Firstly the weight will blow you away. 5.5oz is amazing to behold and then to lift. It also packs away very easily into small trail running type packs.

Beyond the weight is its performance. Even though I have other rain shells I almost always wear this. It wicks reasonably well but more importantly is completely waterproof. I have been hiking in downpours and this has completely saved me (or at least my upper body).

Combine this jacket with a nice insulation layer (I use the Patagonia Down Sweater) and your upper body is ready for near anything you'll get in the mountains (or at least the Whites in the summer/fall) while not even breaking 20oz (!) in weight. This simply blows my mind.

I've only had it for about four months but have used it quite a bit and haven't really seen any signs of wear. We'll see one year on, as it simply doesn't seem like it's believable that such a lightweight performance layer can last regular use. I guess that's my only caveat so far.

While it's a bit pricey for a student such as myself there really doesn't seem to be anything that competes with it. I haven't regretted putting the money out for this at all. If you're on the fence, go for it!

It's not insulated at all. It's mostly just for rain/wind. When combined with an appropriate under layer you should be perfectly happy during 3 seasons of the year.

Excellent addition

Having a waterproof shell along on any length hike is almost a must have. Unfortunately, most rain jackets weigh-in at 12-18oz. This jacket weighs 6.5oz (186g) in size XL. That's just 2 oz more than the lightest XXL T-shirt I own. It breathes nicely so it doesn't leave you feeling clammy. In terms of fit, I've always have had problems with TNF jackets being too short in sleeve length. The XL is right at the limit for me in terms of size. With a 50" chest, 38" waist, and 36" sleeve length it's on the border of needing to be an XXL. I wore it as the final layer of three on a couple of colder evenings. It blocked the wind nicely and was a nice comfortable (and light) jacket to have along.

Backcountry.com doesn't carry the grey/smoke color unfortunately. These 2 colors (Red & Black) are the only two they have this year.

Easy to Take

By:

Because this jacket is so light and packs down, its a no-brainer to carry it along on outdoor excursions even if you are trying to go minimalist. I recently took it on trip to German Alps--over the course of two weeks, it kept me dry during several passing rain showers while mtn biking and hiking. It does the job, and most importantly it was there when I needed it.
