Stroll to class and roam the trails while comfortably carrying your books or gear in The North Face Big Shot Backpack. The Big Shot Backpack's stowable waist-belt and well-padded shoulder straps help you comfortably carry all the science books you can fit in the spacious main compartment. Replace those boring texts with some rain gear and food for a Sunday hiking trip. The North Face gave this pack two water bottle pockets and a small mesh pocket on the shoulder strap.

Perfect Day Pack

By:
September 16, 2008

This pack is my new "take everywhere" pack. It's roomy enough to hold my standard arsenal. It's front pockets are nice for organization. It is hydration pack compatible. It has plenty of straps to attach carabiners with gear. Overall a great day pack and a great value for the price.

Worth It

By:

This bag is perfect if you need a sturdy pack to hold a reasonable load (I manage to fit a dell precision laptop, a 1 1/2" binder, a textbook at least 4" thick, some other study guides between 2-3" thick and some thin notebooks all in the pack). It has a nice pouch on the side for water bottles and it sits comfortably on your back. Doesn't snag on anything when you're taking it on or off and so far so good (no visible wear and tear after 1 month). If you are a college student who needs a strong bag this would be a good option.

Does this backpack have a pocket for a hydration bladder?

Does this backpack have a pocket for a hydration bladder?

It doesn't have a dedicated pocket for a hydration bladder. However, it does have a "elastic compression padded laptop sleeve" which would work for a bladder, and does have a hydration port.

originally I bought this bag because I needed something comfortable to use when transporting stuff from place to place for my job as a camp counselor and this back real good with all of its straps and such, it was a winner when I got it I was amazed how big it was and that even with nothing in it it was flat and real nice. so now i plan on using it where ever I go.

I've had LL.Bean Super Deluxe backpacks as long as I can

I've had LL.Bean Super Deluxe backpacks as long as I can remember for school. I need a new backpack and decided that it is time for a change. Is the Big Shot a good backpack for heavy-duty education? I go to a specialized school and need a very sturdy backpack that can hold LOTS of books, a laptop, and other various school stuff.

College or Field - Good dual-purpose pack

By:
June 17, 2008

Out of 10, I would give this a 9. I've had the bag for a couple of months now - and it's held it's own very well in both environments. I have carried around my laptop, tools (wrenches, pump, repair kit) for my mountain bike, books for class, and folders. I have a cell phone pouch clipped to the front, it it performs marvelously. The hip and sternum straps are highly useful when on your bike, keeping the load from shifting around too much. I regularly fit 3 gallons of milk inside (with a few books at the same time), when I make a grocery run on the way back from work or school (on my motorcycle or mountain bike). The overlapping pockets in the back are useful for holding my laptop cords and bike tools. I don't use the inside pockets / pouches much - they aren't very accessible when you are running with a full load. The side pouches comfortably hold my Nalgenes, even with the insulating covers on the bottles. Since the hip straps aren't padded, it's probably not a good idea to hike it with heavy loads for more than a day. In the field I guess I would wish for a little more air circulation in the back area (but I don't know of any back packs that are dual-purpose that are much better). I sweat like crazy when it's warm/hot, and this pack really holds in the heat for me. The daisy-chain straps on the back are sturdy enough. There is also a hole in the top near the carrying strap for a hydration pouch - which I haven't used yet (I have nalgenes, and a 100 oz. Camelbak pack when I need lots of water.) The hydration pack would fit in the lap-top sleeve in a pinch. You could easily fit the makings for a picnic in here, pack up for a day trip (maybe even a short over-nighter -- unless you're Bear Grylls, in which case you can make your own pack out of vines, mud, and moss). Fits my bike helmet inside when I'm running light around Campus, and I clip it securely to the outside when I'm running a heavier load. I recommend the back to the average college student who would take it outdoors on the weekend. I would also recommend water-proofing it with Camp-Dry, and spray the zippers with it too to prevent wear-and tear from dust / road-grime.

Solid Pack

By:
March 3, 2008

Overall an excellent pack that is versatile enough to be used everyday in the city or out for a quick trip on a trail somewhere. Any laptop smaller than 16 inches fits perfectly into the built in compartment and is protected by the back pad. All-around a very comfortable daypack.

It holds up very well in the rain, and when I was in Peru hiking on the Incan trial during the rainy season it never let any moisture into the main compartment. Held up after constant rain for two weeks.

7 out of 10

quite good size for everyday tasks - good adjustment features - the inner top part with place for pens, mobile phones and so on doesn´t work adequate - the fabric is too loose and colapses easily. But in general a good solid all round bag (a bit small for hiking, but the straps are long enough for attaching stuff on the outside.

Great Pack!

This is a pretty big pack that can be used for almost anything. The laptop pocket is pretty big (12in by 16in), is thinly padded and has a clip to secure the laptop in place. You can also use the laptop pocket for a hydration bladder if you take it for a hike. There are tons of little pockets on the inside that you can use for a power cord, pens, music, cds... whatever. The back and shoulder straps are padded and breathe pretty well.
