The North Face Momentum Fleece Jacket - Men's - 2008
Thanks to its lightweight TKA Superstretch fleece fabric, The North Face Men's Momentum Jacket makes an excellent choice for layering or wearing alone during highly aerobic winter activities. Wear this 100-weight fleece under your shell for a backcountry ski tour, or use it alone on a winter trail run. The North Face added thumbholes to the Momentum Jacket's sleeves to keep them in place during a cross country ski trip or winter bike ride.
Bottom Line: Pull on The North Face Momentum Fleece Jacket for a little extra insulation, and get moving.
I have had this jacket for over a year and absolutely love it. I am thin (160 lbs) and tall (6'3"), and find that the medium size is a sung fit (I purposely bought it snug to use as a mid layer). The sleeves are long enough while the body still fits me comfortably with a t-shirt underneath. The waist could be a little longer, but it's not a deal breaker. The monkey thumbs are awesome and when you use them the sleeve covers a good portion of your hand while still allowing you to use your fingers. I also find them useful when putting on and taking off other layers on top of it, since you can essentially pull the sleeves through with your thumbs for a fast comfortable fit without having to adjust any bunches in you arm pits. The cuffs are elastic (no velcro, snaps, or buttons) which means that when zipped into an outer layer jacket you will have to hold the sleeves and pull your arms out without also pulling out the jacket's sleeves.
The outside of the fabric has not pilled, but the inside fleece does. There is only a single layer of fabric. The outside is relatively smooth (although not as smooth as the North Face Apex Bionic jacket), while the inside has a fleece-like feel. It is strechy too, allowing you to move about freely for hiking and climbing. It will not stop strong wind, but otherwise it is warm.
I have never dried it in a machine dryer, since I find that it dries VERY fast and does not hold water (contrary to what another reviewer has observed). Perhaps this is why the outside has not pilled. The neck is lined with a very soft material (similar to that faux suede), and can be zipped up your neck to your chin (ideal for added warmth). The main zipper is large and easy to use, and the jacket can be zipped into other North Face outer layer jackets like the Denali Fleece does. The two side pocket zippers work well and the pockets are big enough for my large hands. The pocket material is a mesh, so dirt will never collect in them. The breast pocket zipper is a little more difficult to operate (very small), since the fabric stretches rather than unzipping the pocket. I rarely use it since I find that stuff in there is uncomfortable against my chest.
I got this jacket for my boyfriend and he loves it! He really likes the wind-resistance fabric on the outside and the fleece inside. It's still cold up in PNW, but the jacket's keeping him warm and comfortable.
A small is going to be a pretty snug fit, very athletic. A medium is going to give you a bit more room. Really depends on your taste. I'm 5'10" and about 150 lbs. and wear a small.
This is a really awesome jacket. I'm 5'10' 150 lbs and bought a small. It fits just right, which is always a trick. It's listed as a fleece, but I would almost classify it otherwise. It's much thinner than a typical fleece, but keeps the heat. Because of the TKA Stretch, it's easier to buy a smaller size and use it as a layer. The thumb holes are also pretty sweet for running or biking, because it helps keep more of your hand warm. That's always a problem for me. One warning - the material around the thumb holes gets really bad, really quickly. It pills alot and wears a bit. However, that absolutely shouldn't be a deterrent from getting it. Just don't expect it to be a solid outer layer piece in anything below 40 or so.
This one rocks. Real comfy and warm. Handles the wind pretty well. The thumb holes are an added bonus. Sleeves are kinda long unless using thumb slots, but that's expected. The jacket is kinda short, but it hangs to the waist, so not big deal.
Great jacket if you understand what you're buying. Seems like a common review is that it's not windproof... but if you want that, you can find tons of different jackets with fabrics like Gore Windstopper or Polartec Powershield (my favs are the Mountian Hardware Windstopper Tech and the Backcountry.com Shift Element). This fleece is great for mild days and makes an excellent layer under a shell. If you are looking for something to keep the chill off of you on a mild day, especially when you plan to go out and break a sweat, this is one piece of gear that you'll want in your stash! The Monkeythumbs are awesome and give you tall, lanky guys lots of sleeve to work with. On the other hand, if you just want a super-comfy piece to wear around the house/lodge, it's great for that too. Hope that helps!
TNF momentum jacket gets one and half thumbs up (and yes you can put up exactly one and a half thumbs). It's great on it's own for spring or fall days when the temps aren't going to break through the mid 40's and it's flex and cut make it superb for cold rides or runs. The only problem is, on windy days, if you're not breaking a sweat, and you're just bummin' around town or campus, the wind cuts right through it giving you the shivers... then again goosebumps and an instant hot cocoa and schnapps yearning aren't the worst feelings in the world!
The killer features on this jacket are the thumb holes: the sleeves are extra long, with holes for your thumbs, enabling you to leave the sleeves over your hands while retaining the fully opposable thumbs separating you from cats, rabbits and gophers. This is great whether you're trying to light a stove in the cold, or curling up with a good book in front of the fire*.
Beyond that, this is a warm, comfortable and durable garment. After I got it, I wore it all the time. The outside is made of a smooth, synthetic wetsuit-like material, and the inside is lined with soft, light, fluffy fleece on the large surfaces, with breathable mesh in some places. This composite is apparently very breathable: even on humid beaches and marshes, I have yet to find it feel over-vapoured on the inside. The zips are easy to use and hard to jam, and the pockets are spacious and useful. The sleeves and waist stretch comfortable without being too tight, and return to their original size without permanent deformation.
One important note I discovered after after sailing with this on stormy days is that the stretchy, wetsuit-like material retains heat very well when wet. However, it gives up water sparingly, making it hard to air-dry quickly. However, if it does get wet, and stays wet, it won't get you wet when you wear it, and will dry much faster if you're exercising while wearing it.
i am very impressed with this jacket. it is extremely stretchy and is great for running or just hanging around the house. it is highly breathable. the pockets are fairly nice in size and the zippers dont get in the way. the waist is a little short but the sleeves are good. i love the thumb holes. the inside is brushed fleece and it is so comfortable love this jacket
great but definitely on the thin side. i agree with another commenter on saying that it should not be classified as fleece. imagine a thin track suit jacket, this is a close correlation to what it is. first time ordering from backcountry came to wa state in 2 days flat, great fast shipping, i will be back
i love this jacket so much that i wore it almost every minute of my waking hour for 2 week with to breaks to wash it. however the outside stats to pill. i am kinda pissed off but i still love it!
I picked this one up to layer up under my gore-tex shell. Very light weight and breathable. Very form-fitting. It's not going to stop any wind so use it for what it's best at. Overall, it's pretty nice. Only complaint, the length is a bit short. It would have been perfect at 1 or 2 inches longer.
I've worn this jacket nearly every day for 2 years and absolutely love it! I also bought the men's version for my boyfriend. It's definitely not fleece, but great as a spring/summer jacket, or as a layer underneath a heavier jacket. The stretchy material is also very comfortable for running or outdoor sports.
This jacket's amazing! I ordered a small, but it was a bit tight so I called customer support and they happily sent me a prepaid stamp and shipped a medium faster than the previous one. So I got it today and the sleeves are a bit long, but thats only because of the convenient thumb-holes (which I love) on the side. It's pretty warm and I can feel comfortable in 30-degree weather with a hoodie underneath it. Oh and it's breathable and the fabric feels amazing. In the inside it's like a netted sort of thing with fleece in the upper area near the neck. The zipper is nice and doesn't look like it'll break anytime soon. It's be a nice liner for a TNF denali or any fleece you have lying around.
I love the coat. It is good for the cool spring and fall days. Under 30 degrees it will not keep you warm but it is a nice light weight coat for those cool mornings and nights. I am 6'2" tall 210 lbs and i bought an extra large. The sleeves are a bit long because they have the thumb holes but the body of the coat is a good length.
Or at least not what I consider (soft) fleece. So if you're looking for that kind of fleece jacket this isn't it. It is more of a track suit type material. I will be returning it, cause to me it's just ugly.
