The North Face Nuptse Down Jacket - Men's - 2007

Wearing your down sleeping bag outside on freezing winter days would be warm, but it might get tiring to hop everywhere. Thanks to lightweight, warm 700-fill down, The North Face Men's Nuptse Jacket keeps you warm without making you re-live your potato-bag-race days. The Nuptse Jacket's reinforced upper torso increases this puffy's durability, and sewn-through construction keeps the down from shifting. This way, you're not stuck with cold spots after a few years of wear. The North Face Nuptse's front pockets warm your hands, and this down jacket's hem drawcord blocks the elements.

Bottom Line: Tackle freezing New England, Rocky Mountain, and West Coast winters with The North Face Nuptse Jacket.

On my second one now

By:
November 21, 2008

This is one of the few products that I have liked enough to buy twice. I lost the first one during a crazy night out. After losing my first one, I tried at other down jackets (Patagonia, REI), but ended up returning those and buying another Nuptse. I use it as my COLD weather jacket. For this casual purpose, this jacket is good: it's very warm, durable, and fits well. But I do not use it as a technical jacket. I have worn it snowboarding once, but it does not make sense for that purpose because it can get wet and lose its insulating properties. And it is too bulky to fit under my shell.

Reasons why I gave it four, not five, stars: neck does not have a soft liner, like other down jackets, and the zipper sometimes snags, which is could be a major problem if it ripped the nylon and let the down out. The hood is somewhat pointless, as if it were raining, you would not have this on as an outer layer because the down would get wet, and thus lose its insulating capabilities.

Forget fleece, this works well from 25 - 60 degrees. Packs small, quarter space & weight of fleece. Like fleece it is not water or wind proof, still need a rain shell. Just can't beat some classics.

Epic down jacket

By:
June 27, 2009

Awesome for it's price, I bought it on sale here and I have been really satisfied with the warmth, weight, and quality of this product. Just to clarify, it doesn't have an insulated hood, so the one it has is mostly worthless. Other than that it's perfect, just be careful, on cold days it gets people really envious!! I paired it with a TNF Mountain Light GTX shell (zip-in compatible) and it rocks!!

Nuptse Jacket In the Rockies

By:
January 25, 2008

I just got back from spending a week in the Rockies, and had a blast on the slopes and the trails. I spent all day out in the elements and the nights back in town. While there the temp dropped to -2 degrees with a wind chill of -45 degrees and dumped 8" of snow. I only wore lightweight under armer, a lightweight shirt, and the jacket. I got HOT while hiking, and stayed very warm on the slopes. I just wish I had bought better boots, as my toes were the only things that got cold. The jacket is PERFECT, and I will buy another when the time comes.

January 8, 2009

My husband bought me the Nuptse jacket when we first started dating and I loved it! This is why I thought of this jacket when purchasing Christmas presents for my parents. They live in Idaho, which has been pretty cold this winter. They called me a couple days later while they were out walking the dog to tell me how much they love the jackets, especially the lining in the pockets because it's soft and they were very warm. In my opinion, they run slightly big, I am 5'5" 110 lbs and I got the X-Small...It fits perfect...the best jacket for cold weather! P.S. Backcountry is the best...great prices and lightning fast shipping!

The North Face Nuptse Down Jacket

By:
January 7, 2009

Very warm jacket though it could've been better with a slightly insulated stowaway hood and a fleece-lined neck warmer.

The hand-warmer pockets aren't lined but it behind an insulated section so hands do keep warm, to an extent. Wear gloves!

It has a stow-away pocket on the inner left size and would have been better with a second pocket on the inner right side!

It's still PRICEY, but that' typical of ALL TNF clothing!

Very few other jackets come close (i.e. Patagonia's down jackets)!

And it makes a great pillow for your sleeping bag! It also packs down super small!! The only down side is the jacket is found was a xxl, so its abit big for me, but still a great dow jacket

Warm, sharp, lengthy enough

By:
January 2, 2009

I'm 200 lbs. and 6'2". My arms are, in the words of my financee, freakishly long (not that I drag them on the ground, but I was a keeper in soccer, too). So I'm used to rolling up my sleeves on most of my shirts since they tend to be too short. I was pleasantly surprised that the large Nuptse jacket that I bought was plenty long on the sleeves for me. I like the cut and fit, too. It is shorter than my previous NF jacket, but not so short to be odd. I found the Mountain Hardware Subzero jacket to be oddly short - like riding up on my navel. Could use a few more pockets on the interior - you are given one giant pocket that runs from your nipple to your waist - so glasses, etc. get all jumbled up. Otherwise perfectly fine.

Also, it is a left side zipper(the puller is on left, the insert is on right). Is it an error, a European model or something new for 2009 Nuptse jacket?Could someone please let me know. Thank you.

It's not a North America version and could be a Asian/European model. In the USA, the zipper zips from the right whereas outside the USA, it zips from the left.Generally, the down fill is the same whether inside or outside the USA.Could be an Asian/European version that happens to have a different fill.If you live in Canada they can't ship this to you. TNF does not allow it. You will need an address in the US.

Toasty Warm

By:
February 25, 2008

I bought this jacket for a winter trip back to the UK, Usually I would use a rain jacket as typically it's wetter than colder back across the pond. I was glad I picked up the Nuptse jacket as the temp was below zero the moment I stepped out of the terminal, that factored in with the 20 - 30 MPH winds made me think of a chilly wait for the transportation to the rental car. Fear not, this jacket actually kept me not only warm but I had to crack the zipper open to vent some heat. You feel a bit like a blimp with the down but it's well worth if for the warnth this jacket keeps in. I like this jacket so much I bought the sleeveless version for thoise times when you just need to keep your inner core warm.

I'm the same height, same pant size, and only 5 pounds heavier and I wear a Large in most things North Face. The large is perfect fighting as its long enough in the arms and waste. The draw strings around the side can tighten the fit but stick with the large as its very comfortable and has enough room for some layers like a fleece for colder weather.

Classic bomber-jacket style, comfy fit, just the right warmth

By:
December 10, 2008

The collar is versatile, comfortably zipping up around the neck for windy days on a boat or in snow; and looking good zipped down (open-neck style) for less chilly days. The collar has a nice down fill without too much fill. The XXL size is perfect overall for a man with large frame (I have a 42 waist and 48 chest, and the XXL size, although with size 47 waist, cinches to my 42 waist size comfortably, and the chest fits like a bomber-jacket with plenty of breathing room.) The waist drawstrings are strong elastic so you can't cinch them to exact fit, then easily get out of the jacket without constant readjustment of the waist and wrists.

On the XXL size the wrist openings appear large, but fit perfectly and stylishly when adjusted with the Velcro ties, which are not visible. The left inside zippered pocket is huge and will hold maps, a pair of sunglasses and gloves. The side outside zippered pockets are lined with very smooth and plush cotton flannel and very comfy.

To cinch each waist drawstring (there's one on left and right sides of waist), remember to pinch the clasp while pulling the drawstring until comfortable then immediately let go of the clasp. Don't force it, or you're doing it wrong and may eventually damage it. Also remember to adjust each drawstring to one-half of the waist tightness you require, since there are two drawstrings (one on each side). If you adjust one drawstring to your waist size (thereby not needing to adjust the other drawstring), the jacket waist will fit lopsided.

The outer material is a nice matte finish and looks expensive (not shiny or reflective which looks cheap like patent leather). The down fill feels like a true quality 700 fill and is extremely lightweight. The North Face logo looks very nice and is positioned properly. I got the black jacket, and it is very sharp looking and fits goot from front and back vantage points. I tried on a North Face 800 fill jacket in a shop at Lake Tahoe, and not only did it not have inside pockets, but the back curved along the back into a tuxedo-type tail, accentuating the posterior (did I use that word wright?). Whereas this 700 fill jacket is about the same lightness in weight, but has an interior pocket (could use two pockets, but after seeing the jacket for a hundred dollars more with no inside pockets and bad form-fit, I really appreciate the less form-fitting bomber-jacket fit and huge inside pocket. This jacket should have been in the fancy Lake Tahoe ski shop!

Great jacket, very warm, blocks the wind, great color (red, more subtle than the image portrays). I live in SD and it's my go-to jacket for cold weather! A little poofy but it's supposed to be.

Each manufacturer changes the colors every season, whether to make the colors bright or duller, depending on how they think the style should be.This year, 2008-2009, the colors are more "muted" (i.e. dull) than bright, as it was in previous year's models.

A Noth Face Classic

By:
March 25, 2008

I had this jacket several years ago when it first came out and purchased about 4 or 5 different north face jackets since. This has been the warmest one I have owned and really stands up to the new england weather. Only downfall from both Nuptse jackets I have had is that, even right out of the box, they start to shed the down feathers.

December 20, 2007

This is the first The North Face product I have owned. Very warm; where I live, it gets below 0 a lot, and it keeps me warm and comfortable, has good freedom of movement, and is lightweight
I am 6'3, this coat has plenty of length in the torso unlike some of the others I have tried. I would recommend it

I live in canada toronto where cold freezing snowstorm everyyear would you recommend for this northface nutpse jacket? Is this water and snow resistance?

It's not water resistant, It's still good for layering, really warm, you can wear a Goretex shell on top if it rains. This jacket will shed medium amounts of snow without moisture penetration but for extended snowfall, you'll need a waterproof shell. Since you live in Toronto, you may want to consider the other TNF Parkas which is meant for colder climates like the McMurdo parka! You will also need a US address as BC can't ship North Face to Canada due to restrictions set up by The North Face.

I found the best deal here. Service was excellent and the product was outstanding. This is my second North Face jacket. The first one went with me to Alaska many back in the 1970s. I'm taking this one to China for the winter. There is nothing that is warmer, lighter and feels better in cold weather than a North Face down jacket!

I own a large nuptuse north face that is a 2006 and when I take out the inside layer of my small 2003 Columbia 3-in-1 ski jacket, the northface zips in perfectly, I was dumbfounded when I first discovered this cross brand union and it works amazingly for skiing when you need that extra layer of warmth, it does make me look a little on the chunky side, but ill sacrifice looks for warmth if I'm frozen. The choice is all yours. Any brand shell jacket will work but get at least the same size or up 1 or 2 sizes for the shell. If you want to use the zip in feature, then consider the TNF shells like the Mt. Light jacket.

Great & Very Warm Coat

By:
December 17, 2008

I ordered this coat for my brother who is a senior in high school. He loves it and wears it everywhere, even in the house once in a while. We just had a few days of sub-freezing weather and lots of ice and he said it kept him warm even when riding the ATV. It is really puffy, but he doesn't mind it.

December 29, 2008

Amazing jacket!
I've owned it for one year now and it has taken care of me everywhere from Yosemite belay sessions to cold desert nights to unheated college housing.
The wear and tear this thing has taken is considerable and yet it shows practically NO damage. I've slept directly on the ground and even chimneyed up a climb in Joshua Tree (sharp granite!) and never had a rip.
Most of my other gear comes from different companies and was a bit hesitant to go with TNF, but the quality I got for such a low price is amazing. My only gripe is the hood, pretty useless unless its raining and then why would I be wearing down anyways?

Nuptse's rule the winter cold

By:
January 29, 2009

This is my second Nuptse. It is light, very warm, comfortable and great looking. We had record below zero cold(-34F air temp) in January. This coat kept me warm standing outside a a burial service.
The shell is also pleasant to touch unlike some down coats. The tactile feel is cozily enticing. The 700 fill power is so light and unincumbering...and warm when I need it to be. I am certain when this one wears out if North Face still makes them I'll buy another one.

By:
January 7, 2009

Tnf has won my loyality with this. It would take a lot of persuasion to get me to buy any other kind of jacket. The jacket is plenty big. TNF has found the happy medium of big enough to keep you covered and light enough that you'll actually want to wear it. I love how easy it is to move around in it. The jacket is very poofy, but compresses easily enought that you don't feel restricted. I highly recommend this jacket. If you still get cold in this jacket, you have a major problem.

Great jacket to weather chilly winds and looks great too!

By:
March 2, 2009

Hi folks,
I bought this jacket from Backcountry during the toughest winter days of 2009. I used to previously bundle myself with a sweater, overcoat and muffler to walk in the brutal NY chilly winds.

However, once I started wearing this jacket I didn't need any of those layerings...! Its just amazing and really snug and warm. I finally came to know why down jackets were so famous at the first place. I now usually get out with just this jacket on top of a T-shirt!! No need to worry about putting 10 layers of warmers :-)
The internal lining of the jacket is really very smooth and comfortable.

One more thing, everyone who looks at the jacket gets impressed :-) People really like the jacket.

One thing though, I would have wanted the front pockets (to put the hands in) to be a little more deep. They are a little small for someone with large wrist size like me. However, not a major problem and I still like this jacket and hope to have this with me for years to come.

Excellent down coat!!

By:
March 11, 2009

I bought one of these just before this year's deep freeze and snow in the Northeast, and this puppy kept me toasty. The fit is a little snug, but if you go one size up, you should be gold (I'm 5'8", 165#, and I got the large so I could more easily layer underneath). The neck is a little tight when completely zipped. In terms of performance, though, this jacket is the cat's meow. It shrugged off snow and light rain without a problem, and it's most definitely warm. I haven't used it yet on any winter tripping, but for everyday use, you couldn't want more.

North Face Nuptse

By:
March 18, 2009

First, I'm 66 years old. First, This is the best damn jacket I have ever owned. First, ( 3 first's ain't bad,eh?) This is my Fifth that's 5th one that I have owned. I recycle them from dress to work jackets, and I work Construction all winter. Warning>>> Make sure it is authentic North Face. The conterfeit jackets from the auction site are JUNK!!
I also have North Face long johns, hats, gloves, Denali and Parka. I may be old, but I'm not dumb.

Bought the Nuptse to have for an answer to the cold Wisconsin winter and an insulating layer under a wool deer hunting coat for very cold mornings. Spring is here but I took the Nuptse along on a ski trip to Colorado and wore it after dark running around town. Very warm jacket; lined pockets are a nice feature. Stowable pocket is a little difficult to use.
