The North Face Free Thinker Jacket - Men's - 2005

The North Face Free Thinker jacket looks unique, therefore it is. Think about it. Built from Gore-Tex XCR Enduro, the most advanced laminate material, this ground-breaking shell offers unmatched waterproofing and breathability. Ideal for aerobic winter sports from skiing and riding to mountaineering, the FT's waterproof zips, hood and extended core venting create a complete climate control system. Ponder the possibilities: the Free Thinker is cut to fit layers underneath, with a drop hood and offset front zipper. TNF applied its Infusion fabric reinforcement to end breakdown due to abrasion. Its integrated RECCO reflector allows properly equipped searchers to locate you if you're lost in the woods or an avalanche. Technical features like an elastic powder skirt and nearly a billion pockets, including an internal pocket with earphone access make the Free Thinker a top choice for any intelligent snow lover.

Bottom Line: Think less, ski more.

Great Jacket with a few kinks

By:
March 20, 2006

This jacket is great with a few problems. First, the quick attach system for the pants does not work or snap into the free thinker pants of the same line. The second problem is the zipper occasionally zips up incorrectly where the zipper teeth don't line up, and it takes awhile to get it unzipped to get it zipped up correctly again.

The North Face Free Thinker

By:

This jacket is awesome. My only gripe is the hood. It doesn't roll up or detach. It's just always hanging there. Its weight pulls the neck backward and allows snow to fall down my back on lifts.

Free Thinker Is Awesom

By:
February 22, 2006

Great jacket, it worked great in the cold weather given its very thin makeup. It works well under different weather conditions and is an all-around great jacket for skiing or any other winter sport.

It’s a little pricey but well worth it.

Well-made jacket, but over-priced

By:
February 13, 2006

This is a very well-made and nicely tailored jacket, but it is over-priced. Obviously I knew the price when I ordered the jacket, but I was willing to pay it if the jacket performed well. I ended up returning the jacket because it does not breathe as well as I need. This is the second three-layer Gore-Tex jacket I’ve tried and not been fully satisfied with. Sure you can open the pit-zips and jacket front, thermal regulate, etc., which I do; but I still need a more breathable jacket. Bottom line: if you have deep pockets, want a good looking jacket, and do not perspire much, you might be very happy with the TNF Free Thinker.

First use it got was heli-skiing in -5F. This thing kept me warm and dry, without condensation. Amazing and worth the price of entry.

Rock Solid

North Face did well with this jacket that combines good functionality with storm-proof quality, and great craftsmanship that I had previously seen only in Arc'teryx. By far the best high end mountaineering jacket currently manufactured.

Incredible Fit

By:
October 26, 2004

My compliments to the tailor. Every aspect of this jacket seems just right. I especially like the offset zipper. Is this pricey jacket actually better than, say, L.L. Bean's XCR jacket? Umm, yeah. The difference is in the details and The North Face did not overlook one with the Free Thinker.

The one

By:

This jacket was absolutely perfect. Most of the time all I needed was a base layer under it. It has everything, performance, ventilation and most of all style. I love this jacket. The zipper off to the side is a nice touch.

Over-rated and Over priced

By:
January 9, 2006

After spending a load on my new jacket I was confident it would be a good buy. However, after one ski trip to Tahoe the North Face "fell apart." The reflective patterns on it which add style ALL started to peel off—not just one. I am disappointed about the quality of the product as well as the site’s decision to award it "Backcountry's best."

Big Mtn Freeride Outfit--the Jacket

By: Backcountry.com Alumni

Once in a while a jacket comes along that is just plain rad or sick or whatever it just blows your mind. Well this is it. To start the zipper is off to the side so it doesn't get in the way when you warm your chin inside the collar. It has all the pockets you need and patches in high wear areas that are functional and add a killer touch of style. If you can handle the price the jacket will pay back in function and head turning style.

Whether you are ripping runs in Valdez or getting first tram at the Bird the Free Thinker is the jacket you want to wear. Made from the most bomber Gore-tex this jacket will last for thousands of years and it is a critical component of the BMFRO.
