Kind of wish there was a hood, like the MH jacket that also uses primaloft one, but their stuff is never long enough (6'5") so I got this one. So warm for it's size it is amazing. I regularly wear it over a t-shirt in 20 degree weather to class. I also wear it as my insulating layer over long underwear, under a shell when alpine skiing and it also works great (a time when it's nice not to have a hood). I've probably worn it for 50 of the past 65 days and it's holding up fine. This thing puts fleece to shame. I plan on stuffing it into my backpack in the spring and fall, as a small just in case layer. Much better than I expected it to be.

This jacket is very well designed. The two pockets could be higher up for when I have a pack on, but other than that it's fine. I am 6'0"/165 lbs, and usually wear a TNF Medium, and the Medium Redpoint fits like all other TNF I have tried. I works as it's own jacket, with a thin layer underneath when I'm heading to class, or a fleece underneath when it gets colder. You can zip it into a shell if you're going to be out in some serious weather, though the water- and wind- resistance of this jacket is more than I expected. Warmer than a fleece, thinner than a fleece, slides under a layer better than a fleece, doesn't pill or attract lint like fleece...overall, better than fleece. I use it as a replacement for fleece a lot of times, so I don't have to throw a shell over my Patagonia R4. Between this and the R4, I'd say the R4 is a little warmer (maybe, it's close) and blocks wind a little better than this one, but the one will resist light rain and snow more so than my R4. I'd say, for the price, you can't go wrong with this jacket.

Layered this jacket with Varius Guide jacket while skiing in Colorado in snow and low 20's, it was great. Next day the weather cleared and warmed to 30's, wore only the Redpoint over base layers, it was comfortable. Very good garment. Hope NR doesn't discontinue. Easier to pack and wear than fleece.

This is the perfect fall/winter jacket, for temperatures ranging from 20-50 degrees, because it literally seems to adapt to the surrounding conditions. It is surprisingly light and flexible (and fashionable) for the degree of warmth it provides. (It is warmer than heavy wool jackets I own.) But what really impresses me is that the jacket seems to adapt to the weather. It can be comfortably worn in 50 degree weather (unzipped), and is equally comfortable on a cold winter morning (zipped). The weight to warmth ratio is fantastic. This is the perfect jacket in my opinion. Highly recommended.

I had some trouble picking between the redpoint and the Mountain Hardwear chugach jacket. Both are light and warm. Both are seriously awesome jackets. I just happen to like the redpoints fit and look a little better. It fits a little tighter and I prefer the colors. All in all, you can't go wrong with either jacket, it just depends on if you like it bigger (Mountain Hardwear), or tighter (The North Face)

This jacket is very lightweight. However, after wearing it in the evening around Breckenridge I discovered that it's not very warm. I've opted for the Mountain Hardwear Sub-Zero. Not really in the same class, I know, but they are almost the same price so I'm sticking with Mountain Hardwear going forward.

I got the Red Point for a single warm layer at first. TOASTY! I didn't realize at the time that it also has great wind blocking properties and is very light weight...BONUS ! But the real jewel of this performance jacket is when I zip it into my shell, it doesn’t bunch like regular fleece. This is the best combination of warmth and comfort with the lowest bulk yet. I live in ga. just got this in time for 4 days of rain, 25 degree temps, and wind chills of 15 degrees. Got this on your rec. glad I did. This thing handles it all. I only wore a light short sleeve rugby jersey, was outside for 30-40 minutes at time and was dry and toasty every time. I keep getting rubber neckers checking this jacket out in town too. Zipped into my shell a lot smoother than the salathe I have, and getting in and out of them together is way easier. Can't wait to need to use them together (rate 12 if they make it w/ a hood, and it zips into my summit series shell. This is going to Co. w/ me every year. thanks for a great pick-up . large size fits me nicely, its great for layering. not as waterproof as i wanted it to be. i wish the north face creates a 200gm version of this

I would recommend this jacket to anyone looking for synthetic down. I used it most recently on a trip to AK and it fit the bill – kept me warm at night and not too hot during the spring days. It stuffs well into its own pocket and fits into my pack for bc tours, if needed. I also feel good about wearing it around town.

The Redpoint hoodless jacket replaced my Patagodia Puffball (hoodless) sweater which is no longer made. It is light and great to stuff in the motorcycle pack. I use it for cool mornings and or under rain gear to stay warm. Good stuff..

I LOVE this jacket, but HATE the zipper on the Napoleon pocket. It’s warm and has pretty much been my stock jacket for winter, but the zipper on the chest pocket catches the fabric 40% of the time I zip & unzip it, and is so annoying it makes me want to throttle the dude at TNF who designed it. argh! It’s relatively easy to get it unstuck, but it’s still aggravating that an otherwise awesome jacket has this zipper problem. Not sure if it’s just my jacket or what.

I love my redpoint. It is really versatile, and looks good too. It can be used alone or as insulation for another North Face jacket. It is also very light weight. The only issue that i have is that sometimes the zippers on the pocket gets stuck, but it is easy to take care of that.

This jacket lived up to everything it said it would. I stayed warm at ~0 F in Colorado with the addition of only a thermal and sweater as underlayers. The jacket was quite breathable and packable but the zippers can get stuck if you are not careful, especially with cold hands. Also, I found it to be waterproof even after testing it under a water faucet.

Marvelously fits the greatest number of conditions you can experience. Windproof so you can wear it as an outer layer, thin and non-bulky so you can wear it underneath easily. Easily packable, lightweight, comfortable and good-looking. Smooth face helps with layering underneath or over.
Warm enough to wear alone in the mid-20's yet won't overheat you when it's windy and 55F.
If only one jacket will fit in your suitcase or pack, any season of the year, this should be the one.
Look for the vest version too.

Really like the jacket. It's warm but breathes well. I wore it under my Arcteryx shell on a very cold day snowboarding and It helped keep me warm. I almost bought the hooded one but realized the hood would not fit over my helmet. It is also quite stylish for a puffy jacket. i have been wearing it a lot.

This is the answer to your middle-weight insulation question. Fleece can be too thin to stop cold, and the Nuptse et al. are too warm for moving around town in. This jacket will be your best friend in snowy weather. However, I still pack down and wear fleece for winter backpacking trips.

I purchased this jacket to serve as both a wear alone garment and as an insulating layer. It serves each task superbly. The jacket is extremely warm for its weight and is very wind resistant and packable. It accommodates layers to be worn underneath and it layers very easily under a shell. I would definitely recommend it to friends.

Great jacket. I just received the Redpoint for Christmas and have gotten plenty of complements already. I was originally looking at either the Land's End Squall or LL Bean fleece lined jackets. I then ran across the Redpoint on Backcountry.com and saw the good reviews. I definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a lightweight, warm jacket that looks great.

Purchased this jacket as a mid layer to use under my shell during backcountry ski touring adventures. It has turned out to be the perfect combination of light weight and great insulating capabilities. Synthetic insulation that performs even when wet adds additional peace of mind when in the wild weather far from cover. The value is tremendous when compared to similar jackets on the market.

A great jacket by The North Face, one I hope they keep for many years. My wife and I each own two and wear them in all weather. This is a remarkable strong jacket for how soft it is.

Unbelievable that a jacket this thin could be so warm. Got tired of the puffiness of my down jacket and wanted to give this a try. It’s still freezing here in Germany and this jacket is perfect with just a long-sleeve T-shirt.

This jacket's great - I use it mainly for casual wear vs. outdoor ruggedness, but it's withstood cold temps and wind in all situations. It's also water resistant. I wear it when riding my bike around town here in Colorado with temps down around 10-15 degrees F, with wind, and feel no cold in my upper body. This is with only one long sleeve base layer underneath. It's also gotten a lot of style compliments. I'd recommend it without reservations.

This is the perfect insulating layer. Throw it on over a base layer and under a softshell and you're good to go for the coldest windiest conditions--Not bulky and the smooth fabric slides on easy.Check out the hooded version too.

I purchased this jacket for myself for a trip to Colorado in August 2005. I have brought it back to Australia where I live. It’s a most excellent jacket. Very light, very warm and I have just been out in the rain and remained snug and dry.

This is a wonderful jacket. Although I remained skeptical as to its warmth even after reading all the other reviews, I am a true believer after staying warm when wearing the Redpoint over a tee-shirt in breezy twenty-five-degree weather. It has unbelievable insulation given its size and weight, good wind protection in 10-15 mph winds, and water-repellant in anything but a downpour. While I purchased the jacket as a fleece-alternative for use in spring and fall, and as an insulating layer in winter, the Redpoint has replaced my winter jackets for all but the coldest days. It is a great jacket, great price and, unlike the Denali, not worn by every other person in the country.

I rate this jacket highly because it is a great value. I love how light it is, and yet how warm it keeps me. I think it is fine with a long-sleeve shirt underneath down to about 32F, but anything colder than that I add a nice fleece layer, too. The Redpoint is well-made, and comfortable. I have no problems with the napoleon zipper getting stuck thus far. The hand pockets are medium-sized, and big enough for me. I wish The North Face had included an inside pocket. The jacket is so very light; I really like it a lot.

I was looking for something that could serve as an everyday type winter jacket, and this seems to be the perfect one. It's very light weight, but very warm. The synthetic insulation has kept me plenty warm on cold days (so far, down to about 30's-40's). It seems to have good wind and water resistance also. Just wish there was a neck hole bungee. As with most North Face, sizing is huge, so you may need to size down.
Overall, I highly recommend, as the jacket looks nicer than a fleece, and seems to be much warmer than similarly priced softshells.

The jacket is much lighter than I expected, but warm and comfortable. However, the zipper came off the second day of wear. I have not had time to return it yet but intend to send it back soon.

I bought the Redpoint jacket because I wanted something warm that could stand up to the cold rain that we see so often here in DC. Its surprisingly warm and light weight. I'm glad I got it.

I ordered for my boyfriend. It's simple and can go with any type of outfit which I like, but it was misleading as far as how warm it is. It is really thin and serves more as a Spring Jacket, more like a stuffed windbreaker. Thought it looked a bit warmer in picture.

This Jacket is pretty must the greatest investment I ever made. It's water resistant, basically wind proof, and hella stylish. Oh yeah... almost forgot, it's warmer than warm. I've been sporting it with just a long sleeve shirt underneath and I live in south bend, Indiana... to give you an idea, i was warm and it was 11 degrees out with a windchill to make it feel like 8. I was toasty.

its a great jacket, lightweight and warm. However the colors are screwy. I ordered black and it's more of a dark blue.

This jacket is spectacular. It's lightweight and durable. Great for the snow AND the rain. I had a really heavy north face, a bit too heavy for what I wanted to use it for, so I purchases this one. I've been very pleased. And to boot, it's pretty darn stylish too.

I like the weight and cut of this jacket. The fit is good (I'm 6'1" and 168 lbs.) The Primaloft does a great job of keeping me warm down to about 10-15 degrees with moderate layers. If you're going to be out for a long time in this jacket and it's 15 degrees or below, you'd better layer up.

The Redpoint is a great jacket. I especially appreciate the light weight and compactability. I need a layer of fleece below 20 degrees if I'm not doing something active.

Good-looking,light-weight, yet very warm on cold days. Not too warm at other times. Only negative is cuffs could be about 1-2" long and elastic. Currently, an elastic draw-string-sized cuff. Sleave tends to blouse over.

My husband, brother, and father all have this jacket, and hardly take it off during the winter in Utah. It is a perfect jacket for keeping warm without being super bulky. It also stays drier than fleece, so it's great for those quick storms that sneak up on you. Sizing was right on with other The North Face gear they own. Highly recommend it!

Jacket is nice and warm, wearing it at around 20 degrees keeps you nice and toasty. The water repelency is almost as good as my TNF rain coat. The only problem I have is the packability. It does pack into the pocket but getting it zipped is pretty much a B*&^%.

I wear this jacket on its own when temps are 15 degrees and up, and as a layering piece if it's colder or if I need to wear something more presentable on top...never felt cold when wearing it. My wife was looking for a winter jacket and I told her that the women's Redpoint would be too light for her. If the men's version is a fair representation of the womens', I was wrong. Only negative - pit zips would be nice.

I bought this jacket a few weeks ago, it was huge on me. ON a whim I wanted to see if it would fit my dad, it did. Later that night I got a flat, he came out. I was freezing, but he was wearing his new jacket and kept bragging about how warm he was. It's amazing how warm it is yet how light. I just bought a medium for myself. Usually a Large is big enough for me, as I'm 6'3", but since I only weigh 180(ish) it was huge in the torso. I live in Kansas and we are having a harsh winter, I'm really looking forward to wearing this under my The North Face Apex Softshell.

This is a super light, super warm jacket. It also packs down to almost nothing. Another nice thing about it is that it's not super puffy/bulky like a lot of down jackets, so you don't walk around looking like the Michelin man. Unless you live at one of the poles, this is really all the winter jacket you need.

I use this jacket mostly for ski touring in the Wasatch mountains of Utah. Very compressible with a great look. Wear it out at night as well.

This jacket is so good to have. It is great for the winter for anything. It can handle light rain or snow without getting too wet. It still keeps you warm when wet. The really nice thing is it is not too hot while keeping you at a perfect temp. It also has a really great design and look so it works for function and as just a warm casual jacket.

This is such a great insulation layer. I have fleeces galore but the smooth fabric and warmth of this coat really make it a better choice for extreme cold. It's cleverly designed with layering in mind, as evidenced by the snap-loops on the cuffs that make it an ideal replacement for the lame-o liner that came in my motorcycle jacket. There's really nothing else which is both this thin and this warm. I can't say enough good about it.

The jacket was too thick insulation-wise. Also, I have an athletic build, and while the fit thru the shoulders was fine, the fit thru the middle was much too big and baggy.

When I received this jacked i tought "man, this won't keep me warm in Moscow" but once I got to my trip destination this jacket really surprised me. It was really warm. I recommend it. The only downside its that it does not come with a hood, but that's not really a big issue.

I am returning this jacket because it is clearly inferior to other brands. The insulation is thin and the jacket runs too large. I found another puff jacket - with zip-off sleeves - a GREAT feature - instead.

I have bought The North Face products, like many, over the years. Some are excellent, others very poor. This item falls into the latter category. It is flimsy and only of mediocre quality. I have seen jackets at half the price that were superior. My opinion is that The North Face makes so many items, that one has to be careful to select those that live up to the manufacturer's reputation. The only redeeming aspect is that this site is a completely reliable merchant.
