Some say the Timbuk2 Classic Messenger is the bag that started it all. This simple rig, originally built as a rugged necessity for urban bicycle warriors, quickly became the hippest under-the-radar carry-all for everyone from metro commuters to tree-hugging granola munchers. The highest quality materials and construction make the Timbuk2 Classic an extremely durable, long-lasting bag that will become a hand-me-down for generations to come. Want to know the best part? Thanks to the waterproof vinyl inner lining, the Classic Messenger doubles as a killer beer cooler. Just throw in some ice and some malty ones and be set for a mellow day of Frisbee golf in the park.
Bottom Line: It's a bag, it's a cooler, it's an international symbol of fuel conservation. Commuters unite!
the bag itself is great but i was very disappointed to find out that i had to order the strap extra. the 2008 timbuk2 bags now come with a padded strap but for some reason this site does not sell the 2008 bag. had i known this, i would have ordered the bag from elsewhere. however, after two attempts to have them ship me a replacement bag with the strap, i had to finally just order the strap additionally rather than return the bag and pay shipping again. 4 weeks later i now have my bag and strap.
Does anybody have experience using the XL messenger as an airline carry-on? I've got a 3-day business trip (read: 3 businesswear outfits + toiletries) coming up and I'd like to avoid checking baggage. Thanks!!!
I actually used an XL for a 3 week trip to Paris as my only bag. I know this is different from yours because I wasn't all that worried about the folding, etc. of my clothes to avoid wrinkles, but there was no problem getting through customs, security, or putting it in the overhead, if that's what you were wondering.
I got the large messenger bag to use commuting back and forth to school. It's perfect because I can fit a huge amount of stuff in it as once (books, lunch, gym clothes). It is also really well built and durable. I would recommend this bag for anyone who needs to haul a lot, but doesn't want an enormous backpack. Be warned, however, this model differs from the current one in it doesn't come with a padded shoulder strap. If you plan on packing it pretty heavy, I'd advise purchasing the strap as well.
I got this to hold my new netbook, which is does. I got the small size, and it actually holds quite a bit, which allows me to take what I need to school without dragging a huge bag full of stuff. It has made me more minimalist in my daily packing, which helps my back for sure. I have another Timbuk2, as always great quality, useful, etc.
I use this bag every day when commuting on my bike. My absolute favorite thing about it is something I have seen in no other messenger bags - the strap has a quick release cinch allowing you to hike the bag way up on your back while riding, and let it back down to your waist when you arrive so you don't look like a wannabe hipster. The ballistic nylon is ultra-durable. I don't think it will EVER wear out. Additionally, the bag has a completely waterproof lining allowing you to wear it in absolute downpours while keeping the contents dry (which I have on many occasions) as long as the cover flap is situated appropriately. I like the organizer pockets on the inside and the brightly colored key ring is a bonus. The only thing that gets a little annoying is that the Velcro fastener that fastens the top closed is a bit excessive. Don't expect to discretely open your bag if you sneak into lecture late... RRRIIIIIIIP!! However, it's no longer a problem for me - there's nothing a little duct tape can't fix.
i recently ordered this bag (05/08) and my bag did not come with the padded strap, even though it is stated that backcountry carries the 2008 bags. i called customer service and they shipped a new bag. this new bag didn't come with the padded strap either. so, now i am sending both bags bag as if i need to order the padded strap separately, the extra cost of that plus shipping negates the savings from buying on backcountry vs. direct from timbuk2.
I already have the Timbuk2 Metro Bag and bought the XS Mess. Bag for more space. It has the same GREAT qualities that Timbuk2 is known for--waterproof exterior, plenty of pockets, roominess, cool looks, great colors (mine are blue and gray), easily adjustable strap (that stays and does not always have to be adjusted like some other brands), key fob. Getting this bag from Backcountry was a bonus--first time I have ordered from them and I would order from them again. Laurie
Timbuk2's quality is pretty much agreed upon... simple said: great stuff. But be sure to CHECK INSIDE THE LARGE INTERIOR ZIPPERED POCKET FOR THE CROSS STRAP! They're notoriously difficult to find and have prompted customers (myself included!) to return "faulty" bags.
It's giant, weatherproof and wicked durable. I ride my bike around town all day and this thing holds all that I need. Plus it's made for people who ride bikes and fits to your body like a glove. I don't envision myself buying another bag for a number of years.
I was less than impressed at the spartan padding for a bag whose uses suggests laptop carrier. Could have found cheaper bags for that purpose that were better equipped. Although the waterproofness is a good feature. I believe with this product you are paying for the name and hype...
