The Suunto Pioneer Kayak Compass has a plastic adapter and screw set that mounts directly to any flush surface on a kayak, dinghy, or small sailboat. Works... I had my doubts about the mount in the surf zone at first. However, after countless surf launches and landings its still there. I also like the fact that you can remove it when your in transport. I'd recommend this to anyone who doesn't mind drilling the deck of the boat for the mount.

The Suunto Pioneer and the Orca are exactly the same product except for the way they are mounted. The Pioneer offers a fixed mount option where you can screw a base onto your kayak deck. This requires you put two holes into your deck. The Orca has a bungee Chord with clips and is removable.
It is worth noting that it is easy to add a bungee and clips to convert the Pioneer to the Orca.
Both are top notch products, though expensive. I purchased mine here for $29.95 which I believe to be a good price for this item.

This is my second Pioneer compass that I use for sea kayaking.
My kayaks come with a forward of front hatch recess for a Silva 70 type compass but I decided not to mount the compass there and go for the Pioneer instead.
The Pioneer is sturdy and has enough rubber protection to prevent accidental damage. The dial is easy to see and gives you an accurate reading (enough for compass viewed in the cockpit of a sea kayak).
I wish it would have an illuminated dial for night navigation but I am curently working on a modification to make that possible using small LEDs and remote battery/switch.
