Essential Gear for Giga Power

By:
August 3, 2007

You don't have to be a physics major to figure out that you will save fuel when using this windscreen for your Giga Power. Even in Zero wind conditions it reflects heat toward the pot. I always use it. It fits snugly under my Trek 900 pot for travel.
There is a riveted flap that you can slide to the side to allow the Piezo igniter to protrude up from the base of the screen. My Giga Power does not have the Piezo and the rivet was scratching the bottom of my Trek 700 when stored for travel. I have to use a piece of cloth to prevent that and it was a little annoying. I'm a purist and I called Snow Peak and recommended they make two versions of the windscreen, one for stoves with Piezos and one for those without.

Doesnt really work

By:
April 20, 2009

This windscreen doesnt really work. I tested this windscreen under controlled conditions and it simply does not prevent any breeze greater than 10mph from greatly effecting the boil times of water using the gigapower stove and a titanium sp 750ml pot. A simple piece of foil going from the ground up to about half way the height of the pot is whats needed. If you dont believe me, try this yourself, using a small fan. There are plenty of other reviews out on the net substantiating the lack of effectivenesss of this windscreen. One reviewer, suggested that this windscreen was the company's compromise/ solution to the notorious problem of wind with cannister stoves and the legal difficulty of suggesting or developing full coverage windscreens with upright cannister stoves. In addition to the above, if you have the piezo starter, you may have difficulty using the ignitor because the spark tends to gap to the windscreen instead of the stove jet.

Quick Easy Solution

By:

This is a trim easy to add wind screen that reduces the effects of wind on your flame. We used in 20mph winds the first time and it made quite a difference in helping maintain flame integrity. It is probably not as good as a large piece of flashing standing up all around the whole stove , gas can and pot but is much easier to have along all of the time.

Be careful surrounding the whole stove, gas canister and pot with a 360 degree solid metal screen-- If the screen doesn't let enough heat out, your fuel canister can heat up dangerously. You can imagine the results. One of the great things about this screen is, since it is flat, that it packs down super-efficiently like the stove itself. And it does a great job with minimal material which equals minimal weight. Top notch engineering even in a tiny accessory like this!

Reduce fuel use

By:
February 28, 2005

In backyard tests in light winds this windscreen reduced the amount of fuel needed to boil a cold half liter of water from 15 grams to 13 grams. Not enough savings for the weight of the item in my pack.

Great accessory for Gigapower

By: Backcountry.com Employee

This windscreen does exactly what it is supposed to. Probably doesn't justify itself for those counting ounces, but I found it to be valuable at 10,000 feet in the Uinta mountains when cooking. It helped channel the flames to save on fuel consumption, and it fits snug inside of the Snow Peak cookset for stowing. FYI, it will become instantly discolored once you use it but it still functions fine. I agree with the previous reviewer also, Snow Peak should make two versions: one Piezo and one for the manual ignitions. It is a bit tricky to fit it on the first few times, but you can get it dialed by adjusting the arms on the stove. Overall, a nice accessory for saving fuel.

nice little addition

By:

i hate the tin foil windscreens. i'm always knocking them with something. so i was stoked when i found out that they made a custom fit screen for the gigapower. i haven't done any tests or anything to see if it makes a weight difference with saved fuel, but it sure made up for any weight it may add with the lack of annoyance and ease of use.

Pretty Simple

By:
April 2, 2009

Pretty Simple. It works great on my GigaPower Stove and 2.1L Primus EtaPower Pot which nestles down to conceal the flame form the wind very well. 4 starts because I have to mess with the pot supports it to get it on and off the stove.

GigaPower Windscreen

By:
June 5, 2003

The GigaPower Windscreen may add a couple ounces to your pack but you'll save it in fuel consumption. A liter of water boiled 45 seconds faster with the windscreen as compared to without it. That could mean a couple more meals per gas cylinder. Also, with a steady breeze the stove simmered very well with the windscreen. I guess I'll have to cut off a couple more inches of my toothbrush handle to make up for the added weight.

always packing it now.

By:

Yep, works good on my Giga, definitely helps. Just got to make sure it's seated right, not sure why but a couple of times the screen gets tilted after I fire up the stove and put the pot on, not a biggie.

Gigapower Stoves ONLY...!

By:
March 21, 2005

Be aware: this windscreen will only work with the gigapower stove. I have a Northern Lights, and the pot supports are different.
