Smith I/O Interchangeable Optics Spherical Series Goggles - Mirror Lens
Smith's sleek, rimless design matches up nicely with the ease of their interchangeable technology when you wear the I/O Interchangeable Optics Spherical Series Goggle. Oversized spherical lenses curve like the natural shape of your eye to provide optimal visual clarity when you ride. The quick release lens system makes it easy to change out lenses depending on the weather and which lens works best in certain conditions. Smith uses their Vaporator lens technology on the I/O to keep fog off your lenses for crystal clear sight on the mountain.
So I just got my I/O Just as the first snows fell in the cottonwoods. I went hiking up at Alta for some early turns and after working hard and sweating quite a bit, I threw on my goggles and charged hard down the hill and didn't get the slightest hint of fog. I repeated a few more times and still nothing. No fog and they fit great! I'm totally sold!!
I love the I/O goggle, the evolve edition is made from mostly recycled plastic, and the super quick interchangeable lens option is sick. I can change a lens in seconds, on the lift, at the top of a line, where ever; it's fast and sweet. They have great peripheral vision, and fit perfectly with smith helmets. With the updated face foam they fit better when worn with a hat to.
You can buy additional lenses for the I/O here: http://www.smithoptics.com/I-OS_19_1087.html?fl=flase. The goggle does not come out of the box with the Red Fire Lens. It comes with two lenses, the Sensor Mirror and the Ignitor Mirror (Low-light vs High light).
Anyone been able to remove the metal emblem from the side of the "Black Intersection" model, I think it is going to get in the way of my VIO POV1 mount.
I think it would be removable, but only permanently. There is only one, on the one side though, why not mount on the other side of the goggles, just as a suggestion. Removing the emblem might start a fray in the strap, which might blow the whole thing eventually.
k, so here's my deal with the I/O-- for those of you that struggled with getting them dialed when you bought them last year and were super stoked to have SUPER EASY lenses to change "the firstish no frame google" ---AND WERE disappointed? THIS COMMENT IS FOR YOU: Smith worked out the bugs--- check em out now--- if you don't want to spend the doe right away-- try someone else's on-- the fit is better, the foam has changed, and the moisture issues have been ironed out a lot... so give them another chance before you say "no". They ROCK.
Are these goggles bigger then the first Smith I/O?? I bought a pair when they first came out and they were too small. They claimed to have a medium fit at the time but were definitely a small fit.
These have the same fit as last year's Smith I/O, I bought a new pair this year and can't notice a difference. It's weird that you thought they fit small, I thought they were big, but maybe it's just my tiny head.
Cars have windshields, i have my smith I/O's! Blasting out of a DEEP faceshot, the i/o seems to always provide a clear view of where to lay my next turn!
I've been using Smith goggs since I was in diapers and this is my favorite one yet. They offer the biggest, most unobstructed field of vision I've seen along with the best style. I'm hard on my gear, and one of the things I had to learn was to keep my hands off the edges of the lens since its not as protected by the frame as in a conventional design. Easy lens change, hardly ever fog unless you mistreat them... I mean do I need to say more?

The I/O, while I find it is cooler, seems about the same fit for me as the Crowbar, not the biggest goggle out there. But the EG2 is HUGE. And has some of the best peripherals around.
When I first tried out these goggles I was not a fan and before very long I went back to the Phenom because of the better fit. Last year I tried them again thinking maybe I was just used to something else and didn't like the new feel, but again was disappointed. These new ones however have been modified in a couple of very simple but productive ways. The foam on the sides has been thinned out and the foam in the nose area has been thickened up to make a much better fit all throughout. Finally on the third try I have been very impressed and have been using them every day.
I have a question about these googles. I wanna buy one and now I ask myself if it does fit perfectly. My head range is 57cm and now it would be great if someone could give me a tip if the goolgle does fit my head
Sorry for the delay in response, we don't have a good way of notifying users when their answer is commented on. I have the Smith Maze, but the Variant Brim is a sick helmet, and the works really well with the I/O.
Hey Tom, my head is 56cm and the I/Os fit my face perfectly, they'll be fine for a face that's a little larger too... I've owned two pairs, they are really the best goggle on the market in my opinion...
Gotta love my Smith I/Os. Rocked them for a full season and I have no complaints, I don't find that mine have the wind through the bottom while going fast problem. The optical clarity is so good, better than my Oakley A-Frames I find. The change is super fast and easy, and comes in so handy up in northern BC where the weather goes from sunny to white-out in a matter of an hour. They fit incredibly well with my Giro G10MX, gone is the gaper gap. The two lenses that come with it, the Sensor and Platinum mirrors, are the perfect two lenses to have, Platinum in the bright morning sun, and the Sensor for those white-out and cloudy days, and nights. The foam is super plush, and feels so comfy.
I too have both the Variant Brim Helmet (with skullycandy BT) and the I/O goggles and they are a PERFECT match. Sure you look like a F-35 pilot but that just makes them all the cooler. I highly recommend this setup!!
those two perfectly fit eachother...not only that but as an added bonus the vents on the gogs work hand in hand with the helmet venting system, for ultimate airflow...smith to smith is the best goggle to helmet integration system
I had these last season and had the air coming in around the nose problem like others have mentioned. They've changed that this year by thickenning the foam thus providing a better seal. Tried on a pair, had my girl take a look from underneath to see if there were any gaps. Nada. Great value too with two lenses and the hard case.
Doesn't look like backcountry.com carries them at the momment. Try google.EDIT: I went onto Smith's website and ordered the Yellow and Platinum lenses. Both work great. A bit expensive since they were not on sale but still totally worth it. I now have 4 different lenses to choose from, totally cool.
Wondering why this costs so much? Awesome goggle with a sleek look, great field of vision, and has a clasp in the middle of the strap for easy on/off. Includes BOTH an Ignitor Lens (for bright light) and a Sensor Lens (for low light) both with the dual-layer tech with a filter to minimize fogging. Includes a goggle bag. Includes a HARD case that has a section for extra lenses! Now do you get why this costs so much? :) This is a badass goggle package with two great lenses from Smith that do their respective jobs very well. The only thing I think this needs is a clear lens for night skiing, which can be bought I think for around $25 last I checked.
Doesn't look like backcountry.com carries them at the momment. Try google.Try the Smith website. Be warned, they're a bit pricey.Smith has told me they're out of stock on many lenses right now, but will be back in stock soon. 1/29/09It came with two lenses when I bought mine. (low light one, and all around one) On the Smith website they only show 1 other lens (high light one) on their little goggle simulator thing. It also comes with a 'hard case' (kinda moderately soft/hard in my opinion) and a microfiber bag.Actually the lenses available on smithoptics.com vary depending on their stock. So if the lens you're looking for isn't available, you need to just keep checking. This came from their Customer Service folks as I was waiting for a clear lens (which finally showed up after 3 weeks of waiting).
the best goggles o have ever had. better than the crowbar from oakley. very easy to change lenses and has great vision. sick looking with the platinum lenses. no fog at all on the lenses with little ventilation. goes great with the smith variant brim helmet. perfect and i mean perfect combination. no gaps where air can get through as i had heard. crashed in the pow couple times and now snow slipped passed these goggles. would highly recommend even thought a little pricey. very much worth it.
This goggle is very cool. Not only does it well ventilate, but it's so easy to switch your lens with the extra lens it comes with. When I bought this goggle I though that was it. Oh no, it comes with an extra lens for foggy days, a soft goggle bag, and a hard shell goggle case with extra storage for multiple lenses. I also own the Variant Brim helmet and with the two combined I have yet to have any unnecessary fogging issues, even when skinning in the backcountry. To sum everything up, this goggle has it all!
The Evolve series is one of Smith's green products so they involve some recycled materials and other green aspects. With that in mind the Evolve do NOT come with the hard case that normally comes with I/O goggles.
I took a picture at the end of the day after skiing/hiking in the Smith I/O all day. The foam fits great, ventilation thumbs up, looks of the goggle are awesome.
That's what I kept saying to myself on my recent ski trip with these, using the ignitor lens multiple days. I loved them. Fitment was great, absolutely zero fog, great clarity, and the ignitor lens was fantastic from dawn to dusk. I reeeeeally like the hard case it came with too that holds the gogles AND the sensor lens for overcast days (which i'm familiar with as I use it on my smith prodigy goggles I replaced), and has a few more slots for other lenses. Just a great product... just try to catch it on sale :)
I have the Wallstreet version of these and could not be happier on the looks. The function of the goggle is even better!!! I don't know what the problem is with some of the reviewers that have ventilation problems, but i board in Colorado where it is dry and they are phenomenal! I have also been to Whistler for a week and never had a problem, even with the foggy skies, thick dew, and wet snow! I could not ask for anything else. Plus i have used the Prodigy and the Phenom and the interchangeability of the I/O is sickly fast. I mean they are changed by the time my friends get their boots on at the car!!!
They Fit with my Giro 9 just fine, its my normal sized nose that they do not quite wrap around and make a seal on, so on cold powder days I end up with snow on the inside of the lens, which is really annoying So I really keep em on tight, which is what I've been doing but as a result now the foam has started to warp and tear at the edges and come completly off. I'm a little dissapointed in these goggles and have much better luck in powder with my ANONs that were half the price. You should try them on before buying to make sure they actually fit your face. Visually the field of view is great and the clarity is great, but I'm going to return mine for waranty and buy two new pair of ANONs
I bought these goggles because I wanted the best goggles on the market, period. These offer huge visibility, great lens quality, interchangeability (which is saving me from buying 2 different goggles), and they look cool too. However, there are some downsides to this goggle. If I'm skiing hard, they tend to fog up in the afternoon (regardless of temperature) because (presumably) they're not venting moisture. They lack frontal vents, and on dry days, I find myself airing them out on the lift. On moist days I just look through the slowly-developing peripheral haze. With this lack of ventilation in mind, I have realized that I could buy two pairs of Phenom's for the price of the I/O's, which means that in the case of a crash, I could whip out a second set of goggles that are completely snow-free. Replacing the lens on these doesn't remove snow from the rest of the goggle. I have since Purchased the Phenom's, and the visibility is similar (though not quite as good top-bottom). So, considering the cost and the lack of lens vents, if you have a tendency to fog up goggles like myself, I'd recommend 2 pairs of Phenom's instead. However, if you don't work that hard on the slopes, or find that your goggles never fog unless you crash (and you don't crash often), and you want to look freaking cool, then get a pair of these! Oh, it's worth nothing that both these and the Phenom's fit my nose better than any other goggle on the market. I broke it as a child, and have had a more prominent bridge ever since. This means that most goggles/eyewear don't fit me without constricting nasal airflow. Even with a helmet pushing these down a bit, these (and the Phenom's) are the only goggles that have a wide-enough nose hole to make a comfortable, non-constricting seal over my nose. Because of this, I will heretofore always look to Smith for my goggle needs in the future. We don't all have long, skinny noses!
are these goggles better that the POC lobes? they look simmilar from their size and they both have like no frames. so what goggle is atcually better scince they are very simmilar? i hear people saying: "I was going to buy the POC lobes, but i bot the Smith I/O's instead."
i have both, i have to say they are equal. i like that the I/Os come with the two lenses. and they fit great with my Variant Brim. you will be happy with your choice.I agree, they fit extremely well and the ventilation system works great with my Variant Brim helmet. Great combo.
Looks are top notch, I have a large face and they are a tad tight, but you can't beat the looks.
The problem is that these had catastrophic failure in the fogging department. I ended up in a blizzard on the top of Alpental and I couldn't use my goggles, that was not fun going down 'Nash without goggles. Now, I am a sweat hog, I admit, but these were fogging the first day I got them. I don't wear a helmet and I have a decent Fro, that may be the reason for the fogging. I've been told if I wear a helmet that it may help, or if I cut my hair, that would help as well, but that's not gonna happen. I ended up giving the goggles away to a guy that is a more of a sweat piggy, not a full fledged hog. He has better luck with them, even though he had to take them off on the lift to reduce fogging, but as soon as there is airflow the fogging slowly goes away.
I used my bro's Turbfans, they worked great so know I have some prodigy turbos on the way.
So, if you are a sweat hog yourself I would recommend going with the turbofan or just a different goggle period, if not, enjoy.
I got these after trying the "interchangeable" Smith Prodigy goggles. Those are nice goggles, but you need a workbench and about 15 minutes to actually get one set of lenses out and another set back in, and the little pieces are probably easy to lose. Not something you're going to do on the hill, or probably even in the lodge at lunchtime.
These, on the other hand, have a lightning-fast quick release system that lets you swap in a new set of lenses in a hurry. Need to deal with changing weather conditions? Just tired of the lenses you've been using? About 30 seconds and you're good to go.
The frameless design is a little different, but actually looks really good with most helmets. (I have a Giro G10 right now, and it works perfectly with it.) No problems with fogging for me, even in springtime conditions.
These come with *two* lenses, "Ignitor Mirror" (all-around) and "Platinum Mirror" (bright conditions). The full line of replacement lenses are available from Smith or some other online resellers. I also picked up "Sensor Mirror" (flat light) and Clear (night skiing), which should cover just about anything.
They should. Just about any set of goggles fits with any helmet. - Dude, he asked about a specific helmet with a specific set of goggles. Giving a general answer won't help him. And no, not all goggles work with all helmets, and there's nothing more frustrating than finding out that you just wasted time and money to find out that your dream combo won't work.
The 08-09 model finally has proven to me that God exists. I've struggled to find a google that will not fog. No ifs, ands, or buts. The IO stops fog. Only trouble I've had is skiing super wet pow days in Alta this Jan when the vents on top got clogged and some fog happened. As soon as I cleaned the top vents and wiped the inside lens, poof! Presto, a perfect, wide-perspective google w/o fog again. Big Fan.
They'll probably fit but you won't like the "fit." It's going to be tight and smash against your face. They do however make goggles to wear over glasses. You might want to look into a pair of those.
I've been out a few times with these googles and I have to say that they met and exceeded all of my expectations. Truthfully, I wouldn't have known that I was wearing googles until small specks of powder got stuck to the lenses. Well that might be a little bit dramatic, but that's how blown away I was by not only the incredible field of view these googles provided, but also their superb glare protection and their overall comfort level. Unlike some of the others who have reviewed this product, I had no problem with fogging due to ventilation here in Minnesota or out west in Colorado.

I wish they would make a smaller women's version of these googles. It really does add a lot more visability but way to big on your face with the mirror lense.
I tried several goggles before pulling the trigger on these. The I/Os are great. Great field of vision, comes with two superb lenses (bright and low light conditions), good fit for my medium face, dont fog, and look cool- kinda a darth vader look with the big mirrored lens but not over the top. Come with a very nice hard case to store your investment. Five stars
It's called Sensor Xtra. "Light rose base lens tint with a multi-layer mirror maximizes color definition and increases depth perception in varying levels of flat light conditions. 70% VLT."
smith i/o goggles are well constructed, comfortable and stylish. super easy to change out the lens, super nice that two lenses are included! where they miss the mark a bit is that they tend to leak a bit and cause a draft around your eyes.. the main issue w/ any goggle is fogging, while these do a better job than most they are not immune from fogging.. when the industry figures out how to totally eliminate fog, we will be golden...
Nice goggles. Great optics and field of view. The only complaint might be that there might be too many vents, as the fit was great but I could feel air hitting my face at times. Then again it was an extremely windy and cold day (lifts shut down, severe frostbite warnings and all of that).
I played with these goggles for the better part of 70 days of snow last season. My set up was with the variant brim helmet and with this i say AMAZING integration. No goggles gap and looked super cool. Pros: easy swapping of supplied ignitor and sensor lens. Super wide field of view. No rims, all lens. very nice. Cons: lens latch broke in freezing weather, super disappointed. Depending on the shape of your face, sometimes had a gap around the nose area. Had to wear them lower on face which gave more room for goggle gap up top. I sent them back along with the variant brim at the end of the season. I was torn between getting the updated 09 models but decided to stick with Phenoms and Hustle helmet. Cheaper and proven!
these are the first goggles i have ever readily changed the lens out when the light changes without some dread about getting the it back in. the vision huge and clear. i have used all winter without a single fog issue. in this endless powder cycle they have been dreamy!
These things rock! Sensor lense is great for those low-light days and the Ignitor works for everything else. It's a total 2 for 1! Wahoo. Anyway, I've tried to get these things to fog and haven't had any luck aside from taking them away from my face and breathing steam right in to them. Best goggle I've had. No distortion. Fit well with both my helmets (a Salomon and a Protec). Snatch a pair while you can...
Sweet, sweet goggle. These have the most comfy face foam that I've ever used, fit my Smith Hustle helmet (http://office.backcountry.com/store/SMI0490/Smith-Hustle-Helmet.html) like they were born there, and have the best peripheral vision of any goggle on out there - hands down! After a few face shots (okay, it was more like crashing on my face) they didn't fog up a bit. I had heard that the quick release system ended up making for a goggle that was a little more 'touchy' when it came to fogging. I had no such issues. They did fog up some when sitting up on my beanie (all goggles will) but they de-fogged themselves in a few seconds once I got moving. Skiing switch is a breeze with the frameless design. You don't need to turn your head much at all, just a peek over the shoulder is all it takes to get a good visual thanks to the peripheral vision of these perfect goggles. They are spendy, but don't forget that you'll get your goggles, two lenses, a goggle bag, and a case to keep it all together. Pretty money!
Changing lenses, it sucks (ahem...Oakley). If you think it really sucks and you have the right kind of face, then this goggle is right up your alley.
The switch is simple: Flip up the top tabs, pull off the top, pull off the sides, then pull off the bottom part of the frame. BOOM! The lens is off! To stick a new lens in, just go in reverse. Without a doubt, the easiest lens changing system so far in the industry.
There is more though. The amount of vision you get top-to bottom and peripherally is surprisingly large. It also comes with either the Ignitor lens (a decent all around to sunny lens) and the Sensor Mirror lens(one of the best low light lenses in the industry).
Now for the bad, there isn't much. The frame is definitely for the larger faces out there and a small amount of people have complained about an annoying amount of air coming in through the bottom.
Overall, those people with bigger faces and problems switching out lenses, prepare for Nirvana!
These 'ere gagles are the bees knees. Seriously though, used them on a couple of occasions and they perform great. They defog really well, despite what it may look like, and they have an excellent FOV. Really where it comes in to play with smith though is the Sensor lens. They are amazing. They provide some of the best low light, poor vis, definition that I've seen in a goggle. Seriously consider picking up a pair of these or the Phenoms. All in all I like the Phenoms a bit better as they seem to stay fog free a bit better.
I hate not having complete field of vision and my old goggles spent many a days on top of my head; instead of covering my eyes. Coming home from the mountain day after day with serious eye fatigue though I decided I needed to actually get some goggles and wear them. The Smith I/O goggles have the best field of vision I have seen. The only obstructed view is right at the bottom of the goggle and the bridge of the nose. I can live with that since they save my eyes the strain and will hopefully save my nose from breaking in my next inevitable face plant. Any fog that builds up clears almost instantly and they come with two different lens which are seriously easy to replace... Unless you're like me trying to do it driving down the interstate in the pitch black dark. Don't do that.
These goggles fog really easily. Do you do hike access terrain? forget it, the heat from your face when you put them on after a hike will fog the inside of the goggle in a few minutes. Ski hard in the pow? forget it, take one digger and you are stopping in at the base of the tram to hold these under the hand dryer for 5 minutes. However, they look cool, and the high intensity lens really does help in low light conditions. Not worth the money.
