SmartWool PhD Ski Light Sock

The Smartwool PhD Ski Light Sock is lightweight without skimping on comfort and support; Smartwool added an extra layer of wool on high impact zones to increase durability and sustainability. Factor in wool's anti-odor and moisture-transporting properties, and your feet will be up for as many runs as you are.

Bottom Line: Just what the doctor ordered.

"Tough Stuff"

By:

I have been using smart wool products for some time now. The durability of there socks are incredible. I work outside in the winter as well as play Hockey and Ski and they always feel great. I especially enjoy the light socks which seem to breath better and create less moisture.

PhD Is Right

Great sock for warmer days and spring tours. Wanted a light weight sock that had decent padding and good wicking, and this sock fit the bill.

Great socks. Really happy with my purchase. They fit extremely well. Hug the foot really well. Sock breathes and wicks very well.

Too light?

By:

I have few pairs of these and I think it comes down to preference. I didn't find the padding adequate but the weight was okay, even on "cold" days in Tahoe. They barely lasted a season and the toes and arches wore through. On the plus side, they don't smell like dirty ski socks, which is nice when traveling.

Love them

By:
December 3, 2008

Contrary to the other reviewers I think these socks are great. I did not buy them to keep my feet extra warm. I am a very aggressive skier, so bought them mainly for comfort and the reinforced shin padding.

Before these socks I use to feel a decent amount of shin soreness following a full day of skiing, but these socks seemed to have fixed that issue completely.

I should state I have a strong smartwool bias and use only smartwool socks to ski and run and if it wasn't so cost-prohibitive I would replace every sock I own with the smartwool version.

Great for Spring

By:
December 12, 2008

Solid socks that are great in the spring. They are not really heavy enough for regular season wear. The padding on the shins makes a noticeable difference. I have not had any problems with bunching or excessive wearing as some others seem to have.

Buy with caution

By:

I bought these socks in a pinch in Japan while on a skiing tour. They are thin enough for tight boots and don't offer much in the way of insulation. They are good for keeping the sweat down and adding some comfort. Again. Don't buy this sock for insulation.

Nice socks

Great socks, padding isn't too thick. I use them mostly for touring. They regulate the temp of your feet very well.

Thicker than Light

By: Backcountry.com Employee

Going from the Smartwool Ultralight to these was a big step up in thickness; some might consider this a benefit, but I didn't. As someone who wears a race-fit boot, I couldn't recommend these for skiing. They're also pretty small in the foot for a Large (I am a street-shoe size 10). I gave them 3 stars because I scored four pairs for next to nothing on SAC, and I use them as tall winter athletic/work socks under pants when I wear sneakers or light hiking boots. If you want a pretty thin, but not micro-thin ski sock for colder days, I suggest the Bridgedale Precision Fit Light instead. And for super-cold days: electronic heated insoles--worth every penny.

Frost Bittin'

By: Backcountry.com Employee
September 18, 2008

My toes had a dance with Frostbite while wearing these sock. I know, I know, logically I can't assign blame for this condition, there were many factors at play...But in away it does feel better to deflect blame and implement a shortcoming to a pair of socks that I was never very fond of. The fit was never right for me and the socks had a tendency to bunch. I also was not impressed with there overall durability, a pair would not withstand a season of 100+ days.

Well... It should be apparent from reading everyone's comments that these are socks are not fireside snuggies. They are formfitting, and therefore most appropriate for advanced skiers who understand that boots have to fit so well that there is no room for socks with any significant bulk.

I've owned 3 pair of these socks for several years. They fit very well, without bunching, and have padding only where needed. Also, because they are a natural fiber, they don't stink up really quick as my synthetic socks do. Overall, a great asset. Only downside is that the elastic is starting to go - but after 3 years, I guess I shouldn't complain. A great product!
