SmartWool PhD Outdoor Light Mini Sock

Ditch those mangy cotton things, and pull on a pair of the Smartwool PhD Outdoor Light Mini Socks. This warm-weather sock gives you the comfort and breathability you need for long days of trail running, mountain biking, or hiking in the warmer months. Smartwool lined the sock with Merino wool for moisture and odor control, and added cushioning in the toe box and heel sections for added comfort. Strategically placed mesh zones keep your feet breathing as you burn down the trail.

Bottom Line: You don’t have to be a doctor to recognize a comfortable sock.

Blister-Free, but short life

By:
November 7, 2008

Since using this sock, I can only think of one time that I got a blister and that was my own fault for wearing gore-tex running shoes in 95 degree weather for 50 miles. They keep my feet dry, while trail running up here in the wet, muddy Northwest.

The downside is their life span being wool. I can usually only get 100-150 miles out of a pair before they start wearing thin. For their price they should last longer.

Nice snug fit, I bought the size small for men's 8.5 shoe size.

Happy Feet

By:
September 18, 2009

Beside wearing smartwool socks everyday, I wore these socks over the 270 miles of the Long Trail, VT, this summer. I wore only one pair the entire trip (I did bring a back up pair) to test the durability of the socks. They held up incredibly well, and only wore through on the back due to the shoes I was wearing (Montrail Continental Divide, always chew up my socks). After 25 or so days without cleaning though, they did smell a bit, but it would be ridiculous to not expect that. I can't imagine wearing any other socks.

hi there-for some reason the size chart isn't working on

hi there-for some reason the size chart isn't working on my computer. I am going to Kenya and need some light weight hiking socks and these look great. If I am a 9-to a 9 1/2, what size would I be?

cross breed?

By:
July 8, 2009

These seem to be a cross between Smartwool regular hiking socks and the Adrenalins. The nice, snug fit of the adrenalins with the thicker padding at the toe and heel. Personally, they are too hot for where I live 11.5mos out of the year. I love the Adrenalin but could see going with the PHD for cooler hiking. I think you cant go wrong with these under that criteria.

As suspected these worked great in colder weather, 10-12degF on the Colorado Trail in the snow.

Great Socks

These socks are great, I use them for everyday summer and warm weather outings. The height is perfect for me, the never sag. The mesh on the sole is "cool" too.

not a warm weather sock...

By:
January 13, 2009

this sock, while extremely comfortable, is not exactly a thin warm weather sock. it is considerably thicker, and i often suffer from the problem of sweaty feet -- this sock is not helping. i am reserving it for colder days (although not snow, since it is an ankle sock.)

if you are looking for a cold weather short sock, it is probably ideal. also, sizing is about right. i am an 8.5, and i ordered medium. it just fits.

Very Good Running Sock

By:
July 12, 2009

These wool socks feel great. Compared with other synthetic / wool blends, these are more comfortable. They're great on short and long runs, except when very warm out. I have them in every color!

great socks

By:
June 19, 2009

I've used all types of socks, and these are by far the best. The short ones are more of my day by day use socks, and they are great. My full height ones lasted over 1,000 miles and are still working great. Most comfortable socks ever, and its great to pay $12 for a pair socks I will be able to replace whenever they start to wear out.

Keep in mind, smartwool has a lifetime guarantee, so if they ever do start to wear thin, they will replace them for free.

Great sock when you don't need a full length hiking sock

By:
August 19, 2009

Great addition to my sock drawer. When I'm wearing shorts for hiking in the summer, these get pulled out and I love wearing them all day long. Comfortable and helped keep blisters at bay in my new boots.

I agree with will...

They are a great sock but they have a short life as most wool socks do. But as long as you have a Superfeet insert or something then they can last a while... I wear them with my North Face Prophecy running shoes and they work great...

European Vacation

By:
July 10, 2009

My wife and I both got these socks because we anticipated a great deal of walking and a little hiking on our trip, which included the highlands of Scotland. Perhaps it's standard with a specialty sock like this, but from the moment I put it on, I knew this was not like the regular socks I usually wear. The fit and feel of it was remarkable, eliciting an "ooooh" upon first wear.

I don't know how many miles we walked with our Smartwool and Keens - pavement, cobblestones, rocks, hills and sand, but I loved these socks. I was able to hand wash them and they'd dry overnight for us. I had three pair, but could probably have managed with two if necessary.
