In the coldest winter months, wear the Smartwool Men's Midweight Crew under your fleece jacket and waterproof shell. Thick, soft merino wool fibers manage moisture so you stay dry and warm while you rack up runs. Smartwool infused the fabric with an antimicrobial treatment that fights odors, so you can ride home from the mountain with the windows rolled up. This long-sleeve top has flat-lock seams that won't rub you the wrong way while you perfect your turns.
Bottom Line: The Smartwool Medweight Crew keeps you warm and dry when the mercury hovers in the teens.
Some of my Icebreaker pieces could be considered my glamour pieces, but for mid and underlayer workhorses these Smartwool crews are unstoppable! I literally just wore this midweight top (black) in a marathon with just bandaid protection under it and a racing singlet over it in 45 degree windy conditions and it was PERFECT. It regulated heat--kept me from ever feeling cold but didn't make me sweat out all my moisture. The amazing thing is I wore it THE NEXT DAY and it didn't smell a bit. I'll be throwing this under other merino tops to form merino armor when it gets seriously cold, and by itself/under a shortsleeve or tank top tech piece when temps are moderate. I would perhaps go lightweight if temps were above say 65 and energy output was high but otherwise this is awesome!
Smartwool has made the perfect base layer. Marino Wool wicks moisture, keeps you warm when wet and is soft to the skin. Additionally, hollow crevasses in the fibers trap air, which is then warmed by your own body heat. As a result, the fabric retains heat very well. I've tried various synthetic materials for base layering and have found they aren't as efficient as wool. It would make sense however that cold weather clothing utilizing the fibers used in nature to keep animals warm would prove most effective.
This is the most important piece of clothing that I own. If I am heading out, this smartwool is in my pack. Its greatest strength is temperature regulation. I am continually amazed at its ability to keep me warm and cool at the same time, year round. No matter where I am going or what I activity am doing or what time of year it is, this is part of my layering system, or the only layer I need. The construction is very durable. I have had mine for over 2 years with no signs of wear. Merino wool is king. It is softer than synthetics (sometimes I wear this around the house just because it is so darn comfy), allows multiple wears before you notice any odor, regulates temperature, wicks sweat, keeps its warmth retention even when wet, and on and on. And this midweight smartwool is the best merino piece I own (and I own shirts by ibex, icebreaker, and horny toad). The fit is true to size and athletic. I am 6'3" 180lbs, and the large has a perfect snug fit. It is meant to be worn next to skin, but sometimes I will sneak a short sleeve base layer under it. I really can't say enough about this shirt. It would be well worth it at twice the price. Just get it, you wont regret it. 5 stars is not enough!
For inventory questions it's best to speak directly to a bc.com rep. b/c they have access to inventory numbers and the warehouse. You can call the 1800# or click on the "chat now" icon; both of which are located in the top righthand corner of the page.
Comfortable, fashionable, no-itch, super warm, can wear as base-layer or as primary top; all at an affordable price. Great for any cold weather pursuit. Can't go wrong.
I bought just 1 last week to try and fell in love with it. Now they are out of my size. I'm so ready to buy more in every color. This is the most comfortable base layer I've ever wore. I've tried others and is either not warm enough or scratchy or both. Smartwool has everything covered and it looks good.
I'm 5'11" 175, broad shoulders, and the Large fits sexily. Haven't given it the test of time, but I usually take care of my SmartWools. It's very mildly itchy if you're used to cotton/fleece/microfibers, so if you're one of those with hypersensitive skin, wool in general might not be your thing. As wool is concerned though, you can't beat this. Performance meets beauty.
After wearing Patagonia capilene for years I have found Smartwool to be the ONLY base layer worth a damn. Incredibly comfortable, warm, and breathable, they can be worn for days at a time without smelling out your mate, and feels soft and smooth on the skin. Paired with Smartwool socks, they are a must for any winter activity, or even lounging around the house on a snowy Sunday morning.
I bought this as a base layer, and it worked great. I spent 10 days boarding in the Wasatch and this shirt held up awesome. It kept me warm and dry, and I didnt even need to wash it. Although, I did wash it and the stitching started to come undone a little, that's why I gave it a 4 out of 5. I am 5'8 and 155 lbs and I ordered the medium. Sizing is true.
A great base layer. I just took this on a 4 day trek in the woods and wore it on windy days, in the rain, treking in the sunshine and was always perfect temperature and dry. I also slept in it at night and stayed really comfortable. Wicked away sweat really well and a bit itchy at first but I dont even notice it anymore.
The SmartWool Midweight Crew top quickly became my favorite base-layer for skiing. It is just so comfortable. Plus, I just look so dang sexy in this thing! It is nicely form-fitting without feeling clingy. (A truly amazing feat.) Plus, unlike some of my other top base-layers, it is perfect in length and stays reasonably well tucked into my ski pants. For example, I can kiteski with this under just a fleece sweater without getting that arctic draft to my lower back. Although it's labelled a Midweight, I think of it as closer to a lightweight, and I tend to think it would be futile to go with SmartWool's lightweight version. If you want thinner, you should go with something short-sleeve or a regular T-shirt. I do wish SmartWool made a thicker heavy-weight version of this. What I like about this smartwool stuff is that it does not stink like poly after a day of skiing or boarding, at least when new. However, I would advise being careful of how you wash it, because after a time or two in the laundry with regular detergent, it will lose this property and begin to stink like anything else. I think it has to do with washing out the lanolin, which I've heard has some anti-microbial properties. (Or maybe it has to do with compressing or damaging the fibers - I don't know.) At any rate, this is an item you may want to consider washing by hand not using too harsh of a soap or cleaner.
