Wear the SmartWool Men's Midweight Bottom for stop-and-go aerobic activities or as an insulating base layer. This warm pant is ideal for situations where the weather and temperature fluctuate, like in alpine environments. SmartWool's porous natural fibers move moisture in vapor form, creating a dry layer of air around your body that encourages evaporative cooling; you stay drier and more comfortable throughout your alpine foray. By comparison, synthetics transport moisture after it condenses; you must be moving and visibly sweaty for moisture management to occur, which can lead to chills once you stop moving. SmartWool fiber is highly adaptable to a broad range of conditions; it keeps you warm when you rest and cool when your pulse and core temperature heat up. This naturally anti-microbial pant features a covered elastic waistband, a traditional fly, chafe-reducing flatlock seams, and an active fit that allows for bulk-free layering without inhibiting your freedom of movement.
Bottom Line: Active thermoregulation designed for stop-and-go outdoor athletes.
Plenty of length in the leg so you won't end up with high-waters after washing. Soft waistband and fly. Chose smartwool because of the supreme softness - even compared to capilene. Not to mention the fact that they do a much better job of cooling (seems counterintuitive being wool) than synthetics. I am converting to smartwool for all of my baselayer needs from now on, not only for the comfort and performance, but for their sustainability practices. Highly recommended
Very light and warm. I took these with me for a 8 day hike along the Superior Hiking Trail in northern MN. It gets pretty cool up there in the fall, but with these babies on I stayed extra warm and dry (no sweat!) The only time I took them off was when I hopped into the bag for the night, and in the morning I awoke to a fresh smelling pair of long undies. The lined waist is extra comfy (seriously comfy), and didnt cause irritation under a heavy pack belt. The fit was well, more fit... not baggy.
All in all, I didnt pull out a pair of pants the entire trip; who says you cant look cool with a pair of shorts over a slim pair of long undies.
Super Comfy, Super Warm (even for a mid-weight), and extra durable (no tears despite romping through a ton of brush), and even after about 140 miles they didn't put up a stink.
I am looking to try a pair of smartwool as opposed to synthetics for my winter activities. I am looking for suggestions on the best choice for snowshoeing/active outdoor long underwear - Mid weight or micro weight. I know I will probably end up with both, but not sure which to buy. They would be worn under a soft shell pant
Scott, it all depends on you and the weather. I'd say that I could get away with just the micro weight in the PNW, but I'm usually warm and its rarely below 20 here. On the other hand, if you're any where colder than that or you tend to get cold legs, I'd go with the mid weight. Being too hot is easier to fix than being too cold!
The great thing about wool is it keeps you warm even when wet. As a Search and Rescue team member, I use smartwool baselayer whenever I go on a cold weather mission. They are warm, comfortable and not too constricting. Highly recommend them.
I can't say there is anything wrong with these. They are durable, extremely comfortable, and the regulate temperature very well. I have worn these in hot weather or in freezing weather and have been fine in both. They make for great PJ's too when you're not out in the wilderness! The elastic band is covered with wool so is soft, and has a fly which is always convenient.
First let me say, I really like a lot about SmartWool and its products. I have relied on it as my primary baselayer in cool and cold weather for alpine skiing, xc skiing, running, etc. and it has performed extremely well. However, I started noticing small holes appearing in all four of my SmartWool baselayers (tops and bottoms) after running them through the washer/dryer on delicate/low heat. Since discovering the holes I've started air drying them after running them through the wash, however this level of care is a little hit higher than I would prefer for a baselayer. I have decided to switch over to Capilene as I would prefer a more easy care garment.
First off let me make a correction to my last review: Yes, you do obviously sweat, but the sweat doesn't accumulate within the fabric. Ok, so I have had a chance to use the undies in some other settings. I find myself wearing them under my scrubs at work, as do a great job at keeping me warm when I am working in cooler areas of the hospital such as the ICU, or OR. I have also washed them a few times and they have only gotten more comfy, no shrinking (not even the %5 they say is possible). I might also add that wool and me normally do not mix I cant even wear wool socks. Thank god for those wrinkly New Zealand wonder sheep. Oh, and for all you PETA people out there I am told Smartwool, Icebreakers, and I think IBEX do not partner with suppliers who still practice Mulseing, in fact they supposedly (though one can never be sure) are advocates for the humane treatment of these woolly wonders.
These are awesome. I'm been wearing them all season (~50 days on my way to 60). They keep me warm in subzero temps but also don't get too warm when it is Sunny and 45! I have vents in my ski pants, but I am pretty use to sweating on Sunny spring days and these have been great. Wear very well and look like they will go into next season without any issue. I have had issues with the "microweight" smartwool pants as they will rip easily because the materials is a lot thinner. Merino wool is the way to go!
Not much else to say about these pants, they are comfortable and warm. Not too tight. I slept in these on a camping trip in 20F and they kept me nice and toasty. Although for colder temperatures I would get the Heavyweight version of these (or wear another loser fitting pair of pants on top of the midweights).
