Wear the SmartWool Men's Lightweight Bottom for cool-weather aerobic activities or as a next-to-skin base layer. SmartWool's porous natural fibers move moisture in vapor form before it has a chance to condense on your skin; you stay drier and more comfortable throughout your entire workout. SmartWool fiber is also highly adaptable to a broad range of conditions; it keeps you warm in winter and cool in spring. This naturally anti-microbial pant features a covered elastic waistband, a traditional fly, chafe-reducing flatlock seams, and an active fit that allows for bulk-free layering without inhibiting your freedom of movement.
Bottom Line: This SmartWool Lightweight is no pushover when it comes to keeping you comfortable.
I've had a pair of these for about 4 years and wear them for snowboarding, snowshoeing, xc skiing, and cold weather running. I find them to be better than anything else I've tried in terms of comfort/fit and insulation/temp regulation. They are super soft and not ichy at all. They wick moisture well, dry quicky, and don't reek after days of repeated use. I'm 5'11", 175 lbs, normally wear 32x32 in pants and the medium is a perfect fit - snug but not skin-tight, no sagging or pulling - you forget you have them on. Highly recommend them.
These Smartwool lightweight baselayer bottoms wick very well, keep you warm and fit very well. They are also more comfortable than synthetics. I have not experienced any odors. I was concerned that the wool fabric would hold sweat, but this is not the case. A previous review criticized the fact that these have a fly. I don't know about you, but when I am on the mountain skiing or riding, the last thing I want to do is drop my ski/board-wear pants/bibs every time I need to use the restroom.....duh! You won't go wrong with these Smartwool baselayers, I'm ordering another pair.
I'm looking for some lightweight long johns for hiking and biking around iceland in november - my research indicates that either the Icebreaker BodyFit 200's or the SmartWool Lightweight Bottoms are the way to go. Can someone who has tried both chime in with their opinion on which is better?
Question number two I unfortunately have to wear a light knee brace while exercising - would it be a problem wearing that over a pair of light long johns?
I own the Smartwool Lightweight bottoms (they're not showing up on the site now oddly enough), and I own a few Icebreaker tops. I'm thinking it could be close to a Coke v. Pepsi type decision except in this case I like both clothing companies' products (but hate Pepsi!) I think the Lightweight of Smartwool is slightly thinner than the 200 weight of Icebreaker, that's closer to or just under Midweight in the Smartwool. My bottoms have been surprisingly abrasion resistent (or i've been insanely lucky) as I've gone down on my bike wearing them and hit my knee hard enough to take off a large patch of skin UNDER the longjohns but somehow they weren't ripped. I would assume though that given it's a woven fabric it would begin to pill up under the constant slight friction your knee brace would provide. Sorry I can't narrow the choice though I can say I'm highly satisfied with my Smartwool Lightweight Bottoms.
These long john's are perfect. Wool usually makes me itch like crazy but these don't bother me at all. They are super warm, and do not smell after a few days like I find synthetics do. I wish they didn't put a fly in them, but other than that, they fit great and I have already ordered another pair.
Like I said the large fits a bit looser than my Icebreaker leggings but that's fine as I'll wear them under my looser dress pants when it super cold and even to bed sometimes. Nice fabric. I really do love the new wool.
These Bottoms provide the sweet spot between temperature regulation and insulation. I've worn them as a baselayer on fiercly cold days and because they're so low profile and next to skin I am able to add a second base layer if absolutely necessary. Or I can wear a pair of synth boxer briefs under them as well. On the opposite side, I used these on 4th of July last year in upper 80's weather under my shorts (looked a bit interesting but HEY) to protect against the INSANE attacks of the MN state bird up in Itasca and didn't feel overheated at all. They are plenty long but can easily be folded up to be out of the way of boots if necessary as well. If I wear any more merino than I currently do I'll have Boarder Collie's nipping at my heels!
So they are a bit pricey but once you wear them and use them doing whatever it is you need to do, you will not go back. Smartwool's quality is above nearly anybody's and it is extremely comfortable. Poured liters of my sweat into them and they still do not smell either.
I have every weight of smartwool bottoms they make, and will never go back to synthetic. They are expensive, but worth every penny for comfort, and I believe they are a healthier alternative to wrapping myself in plastic!
I love merino! I wore these camping in the mid 40s, and they kept me nice and toasty. I am looking forward to wearing these on my upcoming NZ snowboarding trip. I am sure they will outperform my synthetic long johns.
Warm, lightweight, comfortable... I just wish that it was acceptable to walk around town in these. But seriously, these fit great, wick well, and makes a wonderful base layer. Not to mention they don't itch at all. Smartwool wins again.
