SmartWool is used to getting praise for their naturally good socks. This new medium weight sock follows the lead of their award-winning hiking socks. SmartWool uses New Zealand grown Merino wool for its ability to keep your feet warm, cozy, and blister-free through mile after mile on long trails. The resilient fibers are spring loaded to keep the bounce in your step even after hours of walking. Itching and odors are eliminated by special treatments making these the socks to wear every time you hit the trail.
In my experience Smartwool socks are worth it. These are warm and cozy and just feel great on my feet, even for a full day of hiking or mountaineering. when combined with sock liners they're fantastic.
I found them true to size, though for socks that's usually pretty easy. I wear a 12(US) and the XL is great.
They have been very durable for a three and a half years of use with almost no wear to date. I have three pair and rotate them, so they do get a pretty light duty cycle. One pair did pill when I forgot to turn it inside out before putting it in the dryer, but it's still very usable and that was my fault. Normal wool sock care still applies: turn them inside out and use gentle wash cycle and avoid the dryer when possible. I line dry these whenever I can.
Smart Wool socks are the absolute best socks in the world. They are extremely comfortable, odor diminishing, stay dry and are great with hiking boots. I wore these in Tibet in the winter and between my boots and socks, my feet were always the most comfortable part of my body. I did layer these particular socks under other Smart wool socks while in Tibet, which is probably why my feet felt like they were walking on a cloud. No joke...
I have these and the heavyweights and also the extra heavyweights, being a person who gets cold toes and fingers I like these up to around 45 40 You can add a liner if you wanted . They are very comfortable this is a great weight for just everyday winter weather! Trust me once you go SmartWool of any weight you will never go back!!!
These socks are the best. They fit well and are so comfy. Just came back from hiking the Grand Canyon in these socks and not a single blister in 17 miles!
For 20 years I have worn these socks hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, to work (home-care nurse), gardening, shopping, to gym work outs, even sleeping......everything but surfing or showering! And during these 20 years I have gone through a surprisingly few pair. No holes even, just more cardboardy feel when they are done for. A stand alone product, worthy of this gal's applause!
these socks are great around town and in the woods. Even when my feet got wet from walking in the rain and through creeks the socks held up and my feet stay comfortable all things considered
Great socks, used them on multiple military marches w/ over 80 lbs of gear-- best moisture management I've found out of all the other brands I've tried. I swear by them as do several other Marines in my platoon. Only downside is they tend to fray a little but so far, overall effectiveness has not changed.
It was a search to find the right brand and size for my husband. He wears a size 13 shoe -- regular size socks don't fit. It was worth the effort to find this online store though. Especially since all of his Smart Wool socks are now worn out with holes from continuous wear, which were purchased in another state a few years ago. Although they are pricey in comparison to other brand hiking socks in retail stores, he swears by these in particular for their comfort, coolness, and wear. Thanks for making such a quality product! By the way, my husbands birthday is in January I'll be putting in another order of socks.
Thus far have worn these on a couple of short day hikes with hiking boots. They are great! Very comfortable and breath well. I have many different brands of socks and by far perfer Smartwool's light and medium weight socks. They fit true, I wear a 13 and the XL fit perfect. While these have not pilled yet all of my other Smartwool socks have but not much.
I bought two pairs of these: one for my husband and one for my dad who were about to go on a 4-day hike in Alaska. They loved them. They were comfortable enough to wear with BRAND NEW BOOTS and dried quickly. These socks are AWESOME!!!
My sock collection is made up mostly of smart wool socks for the winter and cycling socks for the summer. Smartwools have worked great from kicking around town, to camping in the Wasatch. No down side, I love 'em.
Love these socks. Wore them all day fishing and my feet loved them. I also wore them to work one day, my feet stayed very comfortable even working in an office. I thought that they might be extra warm being a mid weight sock.
Joe, I simply have not had that experience. I have had these socks for three years, rotating three pair in use and they have held up very well. I find that I have to be careful when washing them, making sure they get delicate cycle and avoid the dryer when possible, but am very pleased with their durability.
There could be any number of other factors influencing their durability too, including shoe fit and foot shape. Since you seem to have the problem often I suppose we can rule out a bad batch or a defective pair. So let the buyer beware, some people do have experience with smartwool socks wearing out quickly, while others do not.
The uniformly "sunny" comments above are not "Smartwool" socks as I know them -- I wonder if this business/sales oriented site is just enabling favorable comments: These socks develop holes EVERY TIME after just a few wearings, and I do nothing strenuous with them:Out of frustration with this happening constantly (They're comfortable and there's a lot of hype around about how great they are) I just googled the problem (S-Wool wearing out) and discovered various blogs and negative comments ( like the SmartWool Experiment blog ) --I just wrote the company pleading with them to make socks that last for more than a few weeks without developing holes. ---hope you print this because, in truth, a lot of people are experiencing a lot of misery ( and spending hundreds per year)for a product that wears out more quickly thanany product ( or sock!) I've ever known ----and they're saying it----buyers, BEWARE!!!
