Sierra Designs Hyperlight 3 AST Tent - 3-Person 3-Season - 2006

The Sierra Designs Hyperlight 3 AST 3-Person 3-Season Tent gives you room for three at the weight of a two-person tent. The Jake's corners increase the tent's strength by 40%, so you feel secure in stormy weather. This piece essentially eliminates pole rotation that causes tents to weaken under stress. Two doors allow easy entry, and a roomy five square feet vestibule for each door gives everyone plenty of storage space. There are also internal pockets, and pocket to stash the doors when they're open to prolong their lifespan and cut down on clutter.

Bottom Line: Add a spring to your step and a Hyperlight Tent to your trek.

Hyperlight is the BEST

By:

Hyperlight tents maximize functional space and weight; isn’t that what we're all looking for? The floor plan is both lower and narrower in the foot area to save weight. This makes the typical rectangular sleeping pads problematic. My adaptation was to use scissors to trim down a standard blue-foam pad to a mummy shape. This enables efficient use of the foot space without overlapping the pads. I found previous comments complaining about mosquitoes under the fly but outside the tent to be laughable. THIS IS A TENT! My whole point is that in comparison with any other tent on the market this tent has the largest sq. ft. to price ratio, and is very reasonably price.

Nice for two people

Just used it on our first trip to Quetico. Liked the length because my husband is 6'3, although the older style rectangular Thermarest don't fit side-by-side very well. Had to bend them up down near the feet. Plenty of room at the head and either side to store gear inside.

Decent

This tent is incredibly easy to set up and probably takes around 5-10 min. after your first time. A loop/clip on the fly and one on the tent body are blue, so it's easy to figure out what goes where if it's dark out.

The tent's biggest problem is that it's billed as a 3-person tent. I bought it as a roomy 2-person tent, but recently used it as a 3-person tent. My friends and I (all under 6' tall) had to sleep with all of our heads near the doors but this causes your feet and sleeping pads to overlap. I woke up with a wet sleeping bag because it was too crowded in the foot area and my bag was touching the wall. Even if you attempt to lay two standard size sleeping pads next to each other (in a rectangular position), they barely fit and almost touch the outside walls.

There is a 1 inch gap between the rainfly and tent body near the top of the tent. So you may wake up with mosquitoes buzzing around your head. It makes it more difficult to keep them out of the tent when you try to open the door.

Buy a better tent.

Not really for 3 people

By:
August 9, 2006

Finally got to take this thing out last weekend. It performed decently. My biggest complaint is that it's not really a 3 person tent. Sierra designs suggests that you sleep head-to-toe, but that doesn't really work, and standard sized sleeping pads will definately overlap in the foot area (out of curiosity we stuck two standard size pads next to each other in a rectangular shape, but even then the bottom was slightly touching a tent sidewall. My 2 friends and I are all shorter than 6' tall, but I woke up with a damp sleeping bag because it was touching the sidewall near the foot area. Because there is a 2 inch gap between the tent body and the rain fly, it is a little creepy to wake up with mosquitoes trapped between the two surfaces, and it is also somewhat difficult to prevent them from getting in the tent if one person would like to exit. The unique shape is attractive, but not very practical. Although there are 2 doors, they are right next to each other and it is near to impossible to get out of the tent without waking up the other 2 tentmates. This tent would make a fine, although not hyperlight, 2 person tent but it doesn't cut it as a 3 person tent unless the third person is a child.

Stood up to Hail and all!

By:
August 9, 2006

I literally got this tent in the mail and headed out on a 5 day hike. The weight made the tent very appealing. I must say it stood up to 3 hail storms and various rain showers in the Wyoming mountains. I was very pleased with how dry and comfortable we stayed. It slept myself (5'10"), my wife (5'6"), my son (4') and our two dogs!! It was a little "cozy", but very livable with everyone inside.
