Reach the summit of calm in the Scarpa Zen Approach Shoe. The supple all leather upper balances the burly Vibram Spyder sole, forming an unparalleled equilibrium of foot comfort and confidence. Reinforced arches and EVA heel cushioning comfort your steps on the path of one-pointedness. When you lose focus, molded toecaps protect you from meditation-disturbing stubs against inert rocks and roots. Sure you could sit in lotus position all day trying to achieve Samadhi while stern Japanese monks whack your back with a stick. You can also lace up the Scarpa Zen Approach Shoe and reach peace hiking through Aspen groves.
I got these shoes for a rock climbing trip Grand Teton...was not 100% happy with the stickiness of the rubber, ended up using some 510 shoes from the guiding company that were much better, the Zens are cool looking and comfortable shoes but not so great on the rock.
These shoes are the best. First, they have typical Scarpa awesome construction. Second, they can be worn for many things: hiking, climbing, biking, and just wearing around town. These are my go-to shoes now.
Don't know the best way to point this out, but the weight is wrong as listed. It says, "[Pair, size 9] 15.5oz (440g) ". It should read "1/2 Pair", see Scarpa's website, or other online retailers. Just wanted to point this out for other weight obsessed shoppers.
Shoes are bomb, very tough and comfortable. I use them as knock-arounds, casual to work, whatever.
However, the sizing is a definite issue. Be aware that what Scarpa calls a US-11 is more like a US 10. I normally wear a 10.5-11, depending on the manufacturer. I purchased the EU 44.5, which Scarpa says on the label is equivalent to a US 11. This shoe is barely wearable for me. My toes touch the front of the shoe and I could not use them on a long hike in the woods for fear of blisters or toenail damage.
Perhaps, because they are scrambling shoes meant for light climbing, that they are cut a little tighter which might make them more useful on the rocks. But for casual wear and walking, they are too tight. Go up a half size for sure.
Write your comment here...I would agree here. I got a bro deal on mine so I wasn't too picky about the fit. My 11's fit like a 101/2. A tad snug for downhill with a pack but otherwise livable. go a half size up if you like your big toenails.
I've never been stoked on a pair of shoes before. But these are incredible! Zero, I mean ZERO, break-in time needed. They are comfy right out of the box. The soles are super sticky and will scramble up and down sketchy scree and boulder fields with ease. Pretty good against 'soakers' when you punch through ice into the gooey mud and water below. I think I'll reinforce them with some Nikwax just so they'll be bomb proof. I wear an 8 shoe and picked up the 41. No complaints. The toe box is just barely roomy so my toes aren't getting stuffed when coming down off peaks while my ankle is locked in. The only fit issue is a really minor one; they are a little too roomy above the base of my toes, under the 2nd and 3rd X on your laces. Same fit applies to my Scarpa Technos. While I'd rather have a more precise fit, it's hardly a worry. As for the stink factor, I've put nearly 100 miles and 3 summits under these shoes in about 10 days and they are still allowed in my bedroom. Great stuff!
This Scarpa footwear isn't named an "Approach Shoe" for nothing. Now that they have been used a bit, and broken in, they are really amazing. I wear them to gym just to work out, and unfortunately-- everyone in the locker room wants to know what they are, where I got them ... but hey, what's wrong with that?
I really like this scarpa shoes. They are very confortable and supportive. I also got the Boreal Flyers because I was undecided and I ended up keeping both. They are both great eventhough the scarpas are a little bit more confortable. They are not made in Italy but in Romania but quality is very high. Give them a try if looking for a very good and confortable pair of approach shoes.
