As the newest incarnation from Salomon's well-loved trail running line, the waterproof and ridiculously comfortable Men's XT Wings WP Shoe tackles the trails wet or dry, and keeps the comfort going even after you leave the trail. With the help of a foot-hugging asymmetrical Quicklace system, and pronation control in the midsole, the XT Wings WP Shoe provides unparalleled fit and comfort both on the trail and off. Salomon's versatile, Running Contragrip sole tames any trail; from rocky descents to muddy climbs to slushy streets in town. The antimicrobial Ortholite footbed puts an end to foot funk, while the Agile Chassis Skeleton supports your arches and provides a stable platform for rocky and rough terrain, reducing foot fatigue and chances of a rolled ankle.
Bottom Line: The WP stands for waterproof, and Salomon stands for amazing trail running durability and performance.
I have only had my XT Wings WP's ( waterproof version ) for about 2 weeks now , its a bit early for a review - But i bought a pair of Salomon XA Comp 3 GTX Trail runners at the same time thru this site & sent here to Nelson , New Zealand. They both have Gore-Tex in them.I was skeptical with the XT's at the start as they felt a bit tight for some reason, when the GTX's were straight out of the box they provided a good fit , both are the same size , so i ran the GTX's for first 2 days & they feel good , quite light ( lighter than the Xt's )not bad traction , ran around between 8-12klm technical trail both times , so then I thought "bugger it" & I'm putting on the XT's for awhile now.
I have found that the xt's require a little break in time , a few days + for running ( a little bit tight ), but after that point , they feel amazing . I can't stop wearing them now as they are so comfortable that it's not funny ( seriously) they give amazing shock-absorption over hard rocks ,pavement/road with a bit left for tiny bit of bounce etc so i can move faster compared to the GTX's ( had a rolled ankle for a few days & it was tolerable to run in the xt's but not the Gtx's ). A lot more stable & lot less ankle roll than the GTX's and other runners , tho my feet feel a bit higher from the ground & caught things on the way through sometimes ( had to read adjust how i ran a bit ) on uneven ground - trails , etc ). They feel pretty much like a comfy slipper. Love the Salomon lace up system , hardly ever touch them , just slip them on & don't even touch the laces & they never bang against your legs as the laces are tucked away in the little pouch thing . It was pouring down rain last night for the 1st time since i got them & I was so eager to run thru mountain trails here in the torrential rain just to see if they were waterproof , but i was really sore from working out at the gym & a previous hard trail run the day before - was too sore & i was spewing. So eager to try them in muddy wet conditions as they say waterproof in a few different areas on the runners . Tho i don't think the WP's( Gore-Tex ) would be suitable for summer as i feel they don't give enough ventilation as my feet were getting quite warm each time tho they are still new , the normal XT's would be great for this i think as they have mesh on them.
The Red XT wings WP's are really flashy looking , they look awesome like a professional adventure racer on an advertisement & are great for night running as they are reflective . So car's , trucks , etc can see you ( i run mostly at night after work , so it's wicked for that), I actually hate flashy looking runners , as like to get down & just do it without the hype .
Where can I find replacement system to snug the shoes up? My lace system broke and i can't find anywhere to get a replacement. Any help would be appreciated LR
I've done nearly 100 miles in my XT's now and think they're amazing! The fit was perfect... they might even rival my Ferragamo's. I haven't done a ton of running in the wet so I can't say they're ultra waterproof, but they've been great for traction on technical trail and off trail as well as in the snow. They are plenty breathable! I'd recommend these to anyone that wants a great fit, the best lacing system and all the nuts and bolts of a really amazing set of tools on your feet!
What is the main difference between the WP and GTX? They are both waterproof, correct? I guess I'm confused - if they are both waterproof what would the difference (if any) be?
WP stands for Salomon's proprietary waterproof model, whereas GTX stands for the actual Goretex brand and the shoe utilizes their product. The question then becomes do you need "waterproofness" from the most trusted name in shoes or from the most trusted name in waterproofing. I guess you have to answer that for yourself.
After a few km of snow-covered trails I hit this section with just grass and mud. Save for ice, the shoes are admirable in every other surface I've put them through.
Great all purpose shoes. This was my second pair and my last, as my only complaint with these shoes is that once the lace system breaks (which did on both my pairs) the shoes are useless. I am returning my XT wings for the above reason, as thankfully Salomon covers their shoes with a 12 month warranty. If not for this problem I would rate them 5 stars
Sure! These wouldn't be bad at all. You might use caution in the lacing system though. I had major problems with it. You could also check out Montrail and Vasque. They'd both be good for your type of foot.Hope that helps.
Nice pair of shoes, but the toe piece is fairly tight if you have a wide foot. I'm still get blisters on my small toes while running in these (after a couple of weeks), so it would be worth getting half a size bigger than a regular running shoe if you have a wide foot.
I wanted to confirm that there is a difference between the salomon xt wings wp and the xt wings gtx. Clearly on your website there is a difference, but others vendors seem to be confused. Am I right to assume that the wp's use a Salomon proprietary membrane, while the gtx's use goretex?

Compared to the 2005 and 2006 XCR Pro's, Salomon has made the XT Wings lighter, yet kept the great heel cushion and other supportive features that make running on the trail a pleasure. I am 6'0, 155 lbs. and got my pair a week ago. I ran a 7 miler on a powerline and a 20 miler on a trail at the local state park. The trail consists of packed dirt, lots of roots and even more rocks ranging from pea to bowling ball size. I think the shoes felt great on the varied surface. I've read other reviews that stated the shoes were "too soft"... I'd like to know what shoes you were comparing them to and what type of trail surface you were running on. They aren't stiff, but unlike road running were you can stare off into oblivion or at least down the block, I run like I ride and pick my line immediately in front of me. So I didn't purposefully step on sharp objects to see how they'd protect my feet, but all in all they were supportive and stable. I had no issues with the laces breaking or becoming loose during the run. You may pay top dollar for these shoes, but there's no buyer's remorse here. Good job Salomon!
I chatted with Derek S. and he was very helpful in pointing me to the right shoe for my foot/needs. I used them for the first time today for a 6 km trail run (snow, mud, pebbles/stones) and the shoe was in it's element. I do have to say they require some break-in as my right pinkie had a small blister, which was probably done during descent. Next run I'll just put a band-aid; no big deal. Grip is excellent regardless of the terrain I traversed and they provide good stability to the ankle and supported very well my neutral/mild-underpronation strike.
would you say these are the best for winter running as far as keeping your feet the warmest or the xt wing gtx's? I have the regulars and they are great for ventilation but get cold in the winter.
Salmon makes a great winter shoe called the Speedcross, you might want to check those out. The GTX's will probably keep your feet dry and anything that is waterproof is going to breath a little less than something that isn't so your feet will retain more heat.
I was going to wait until rainy season hit again before giving this shoe the two thumbs up, but after getting many compliments on its looks, not feeling too hot in muggy weather(this is now my preference on hot days even though they are black) and unexpectedly running into a sand trail during the tail end of a hike without coming up with a single spec of sand inside my shoe, I must say that these are the best shoes I have ever owned. I run regularly in these shoes, and when I washed them off for the first time after several months, not a drop of water seeped in. I would buy these same shoes again when mine wear out. No shoelaces means that they are extremely easy to put on and off. I have yet to test them in wet conditions, but from what I have experienced so far, I highly recommend them. The price is not cheap, but this is a case where the higher price tag does translate to higher quality.
Hi,I would like to know what colours is available in the shoe size 11[uk size]I do not like the black and would like the XT WINGS Advertised on the net?
Haven't had a chance to test these in wet conditions yet, but they are lighter and more comfortable than any other shoe I've had, which isn't much, but that includes a pair of The North Face hikers. I've also gotten multiple compliments on the looks as well. The shiny reflectors seem to catch a lot of attention! I would buy these again without hesitation.
Would these be OK to wear if I predominately run on roads? I don't run all that far - only like 3-5miles per run / 2-3x a week - and I also like to wear trail runners for hiking. Would these fit the bill?
Yes, these would be fine. They're meant for trail running so they would clean house on a smooth road.I actually ran with these shoes on the road while I was traveling and couldn't run the trails. They're fine on the road as long as they're a little bit broken in. They tend to be quite a bit stiffer than a regular road shoe. Mine, at the time, were very broken in so they were fine. They're awesome for both though. I did have tons of problems with the laces breaking.....just as food for thought.
I have a bad right ankle; which is to say that I have permanent ligament damage. I have hunted for many months to find a sole wide enough to make certain that my ankle does not roll outwards (supinate)
These things fit the bill. Remarkable really, but the wings at the sole are about a third again wider than the base of your heel. This pyramid type of transition effectively rights rolling ankles for you. Very pleased.
Caution: the WP versions do not break in as well as the non-WP, at least not in the upper. Unless you plan to have wet feet from running through frost or dew or snow, I would get the non-WP version, or wait for the S-Lab version (about 100 some grams lighter than the non WP, 200 grams lighter than WP)
i'd say the opposite to that response , i jus got mine a few days ago delivered to New Zealand . altho its not winter here yet , i find my feet are quite warm in them , they are very comfy & good shock absorbtion - means i can go faster on hard surfaces, altho a liitle heavier than the "Salomon XA Comp 3 GTX Trail" that i bought at the same time . They don't breathe as much as i thought they would & will find out soon to see if they are waterpoof & have a shower with them ( just need some gaiters to stop water coming in the top )
Loved the shoe, look, feel under foot, and everything, but they were too narrow in the area behind the toes and i could not wear them. Probably not a good shoe for someone with a wide foot. Too bad I loved the shoes.
I live in the NorthWest and, if you didn't know, it rains quite a lot. I was in the market for a waterproof athletic pair of shoes that I could wear to my son's baseball games and to work when it was wet outside. These shoes fit the bill to a "T". I've worn them to many soggy, muddy games. I've even walked through puddles that covered the tops of the shoes. My feet remained completely DRY - these shoes are amazing! They also clean up very well. Just take a brush and some water and they're ready for the office. They dry pretty quickly too. The only con is that it took a good day or two to break them in. They run a 1/2 small so order 1/2 larger.
I've been running the trails with Salomon sneakers for about 2 years now. I loved them all and these are the best of everyone of them. The fit is very comfortable and running over a mine field of rocks are effortless. Love 'em.
I live and run in a rain forest. Nearly 13' of precip each year. Winter time runs are often in slush. This is the first thing short of Gore-tex boots that keep me dry. They are the heaviest running shoe I own, but at the end of a run, I don't seem to notice. Can't speak for durability yet. Good fit, feel, and best of all when I'm dog tired, these puppies slide off real easy.
This shoes have been amazing. The best fit imaginable. My feet jump for joy every time I put them on. The intuitive lacing system is fantastic and really makes your foot feel snug. There is plenty of ankle support which helps out tremendously on the run. I've never had to wish I had more grip. I hiked/ran a volcano in Nicaragua last week and the shoes made the run incredibly fun and easy. Never once had to worry about losing traction.
The waterproof function works wonders as well. After the volcano hike, the shoes were covered in dust and dirt. A simple garden hose and paper towel cleaned them off to almost brand new and my feet never got wet when washing them off.
I love these shoes and will be a Salomon customer from now on.
I would do about 3 miles a day in these and liked everything about them but durability. The inside sock liner ripped on 2 pairs, so i returned them. I wont pay that much money for shoes that rip on me in 6 months.
