Bought these about a year ago for all around everything including off trail day hikes and occasional running. Finally some of the seams are starting to break down but the shoes are still holding their shape. The only complaint is the tongue is very large and collects bits of trail debris. By far the best pair of shoes I have ever bought!

Light Weight Comfort

By:
August 30, 2008

I hiked Half Dome in July in a pair of Nike trail runners My feet were dead and ended up rolling my ankle. When I got home I iced my ankle and ordered these shoes. A month later I was back on the trail and the Salomons made the difference. Great traction, light weight and comfortable. The Gore-Tex is a little warmer than say a vented shoe but having a waterproof shoe is worth the trade off. My friends all have Salomons and they all swear by them.

Received the shoes last week and they wonderful. The only drawback is that they are a little warm in the 100 degree heat of Texas. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good pair of crew socks that would keep my feet cool while wearing these shoes?

Road Runner Sports has a great house brand of high-performance running socks. I just ran a half-marathon in Afghanistan a few weeks ago--loved 'em! I wasn't wearing my Salomons at the time, but still...those socks rock!

Good shoe

By:
December 30, 2008

This is a great shoe for some conditions. I think the shoe works well in wet, soft or muddy conditions. However, I think it’s a little rigid for hard pack, firm or rocky conditions especially if you like a shoe with some cushioning. (Take into consideration my size: 6ft, average arch, 185lbs) The lacing system is exceptional and, from my experience, the only thing that comes close is the North Face BOA system. The Salomon system is easily adjusted and the excess stows conveniently in tongue pouch. Additionally, I’ve never had any problems with the laces loosening during a run or coming un-stowed from the pouch. All-in-all, I rate this shoe high in wet and soft conditions, however I’ll grab one of my other trail shoes when the conditions are hard packed or dry.

A side note: I also use a pair of these shoes for mountain biking because of the firm platform, the lacing system (stows away and stays out of the chain), and they’re water proof. (I don’t use clip-ins but that’s a separate discussion topic)

These shoes are excellent. Comfortable, form fitting, and the lacing system is real nice giving you a snug & dialed in fit. The fabric lace loops are reinforced with plastic loops which help reduce wear and tear on the laces, unlike the XT Wings.

Thanks.

I have high arches as well and absolutely love these shoes. I used to have the XT Wings, but they felt sloppy and seemed to be made for ppl with flatter feet. This shoe has a snug fit, ultimate trail stability, and has a more durable lacing system than other Salomon's because of its reinforced lace loops.

Very Nice

By:
March 9, 2009

These runners take control when I put them on, they force me to take off running along any muddy trail I can find on a rainy day. Puddles are no threat to these bad boys. I am a size 10 in all shoes and a 10 in these are true to size. They grip and cusion well to any surface. The forefoot area of the sole is not shielded well from rocks so you will feel a poke if you roll over a pointed one. Pronation seemed to be inhibited but not as much as a shoe designed for just that. When it is warm and dry out my feet did heat up quite a bit, and when it's hot out your feet will feel as if they were on fire. The lacing system and cusioning system are both very nice. These shoes are great and reliable for wet weather and sloppy trail running.

Breathable GTX

By:
May 21, 2009

Living currently in Perth, Australia, the climate has put me off buying a pair, however with trail runs planned in the Colorado Rockies, and New Zealand Southern Alps again this year, I jumped at the opportunity to buy a pair in a recent sale. I usually trail run with two interchanging pairs of XA Pro 3D Ultra without goretex, and the goretex construction in comparison makes for a more supportive shoe.

This week I had the opportunity to trial them on a 2 hour trail run when the temperatures dropped to 22-26 degrees Celcius. This may seem warm for goretex, but they stayed dry and very comfortable for the duration.I even wore them for the 1 hour drive home from the trail run location on the Bibbulman Track without considering taking them off.

I was surprised at how breathable they were and like any goretex products you need to keep them clean to properly function.

The run was through some nasty and extreme jagged rocks and loose gravel and my feet were well protected. Technically a great shoe that fits me and I am looking forward to testing it on a rainy and wet day for further feedback!

These are incredible!

By:
February 3, 2009

I bought a pair of these thinking they were not the gore-tex version since I wanted the regular ones. When they came I was a bit bummed, but decided to give them a try anyway. The fit is perfect, better support than any other shoes I have and they are incredibly comfortable. I was a bit unsold on the waterproof feature until I spent a morning tromping through the snow, and after that I am totally sold. I have not had wet feet since these came. They also vent incredibly well, and have not had an issue with swamp foot like I had with a pair of NF gore-tex shoes that ended up in the donation box. The lacing system is bomber, works very well. Highly recommended.

The Salomaon XA Pro Ultra GTX

By:
November 21, 2008

So this is my first pair of "trail" shoes. The first day of running I did about 4 miles. I have the Black/Black, very sharp looking and the quick lace system is the bomb. After the 4 miles I was not really impressed. I over pronate some and was starting to get the same pain I do when my shoes break down. Well just to be fair I figured they probably just needed to be broken in. The second day I did another 4 miles and now I see why people rave about this shoe. It was very ridged at first but as I warmed up and got my stride going the shoes worked very well. I would recommend this shoe. The price however....

I disagree

By:
May 7, 2009

Pros: Comfy, supportive, love the lacing, keeps the feet away from the elements.

Cons: We all know Goretex isnt that breathable. That being said, my feet may stay dry from the rivers and streams, but they sweat like crazy in these.

I disagree with the previous review. I have a letter from a well known shoe company thats 4 letters long that told me their warranty does not apply to me as Im too hard on their shoes. No problems here and I now have a nice collection of Salomons. I have flat feet and these mitigate that better than any other shoe Ive run in other than my old pair of Pearl Izumi that were motion control. 4 stars for the price and fact they dont breathe all that great

Order Half Size Large

By:

Great trail running shoes. The gore-tex is a bit warmer but worth the waterproof. I've taken them all over the pacific northwest and time and again my feet are happier than my friends. Order a half size larger - I had to exchange my first pair.

I know these shoes are waterproof but would they be considered water shoes as well? could you jump in the river with these on and not ruin the shoes? I plan to do some white water rafting/canoeing and wanted to know if these shoes could hold up to that type of challenge as well.

You won't ruin them, but you won't have dry shoes for a while... especially if you're on a multi-day trip. You're better off with non-waterproof shoes if you're going to be in and out of the water.

The problem with getting a shoe that has a Gore-Tex membrane is that they will hold water as well as they repel water. What you want in a water shoe is one that allows the water to escape thus giving it the ability to dry out faster. A shoe with a membrane will cause the water to be retained adding to the likely hood of developing blisters and the uncomfortableness of constantly wet feet. Gore-tex running shoes are intended to keep dew and light rain and snow from creeping in, not necessarily for walking in water. If the question is if they'll hold up to constant exposure to water, I think they would be fine. But once water gets inside, you will be wearing essentially plastic bags on your feet...

3rd Pair

By:
April 23, 2009

I'm currently on my thrid pair, and when these wear out, I'll be looking for my forth. The rubber is soft and grippy, great for the trail. I got sent into the city on business for a couple of weeks and had to run on the pavement. I noticed a lot of wear after those weeks on the concrete. If your running roads alot I would look for something else. If your on the dirt, I highly recommend. The lacing system is great, but part of me feels like this is the new velcro, I hope I don't forget how to tie shoes.
The colors could be a little less flash, but that's a completely personel preference.

Not much good to say

By:
November 8, 2008

These are the worst shoes I've tried. My first pair had the soles wear out in 2 weeks, the replacements lasted 3. Now I'm running on a pair of La Sportiva's that are less expensive but are way better quality. I admit that I'm tough on gear, footwear in particular, but my previous shoes all lasted at least a few months. On the plus side, the lacing system works well and the shoes dry quickly. Overall, a very disappointing shoe.

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX

By:
June 13, 2009

I put these through everything here in Utah. Whether it be fluffy snow, slushy snow, water, mud, gravel, cement, wood, anything; they perform well. My only complaint is that they run a little skinny. I am 6'3" 250 lbs and wear a size 13. They do get progressively better but I had to break mine in for a few days. I wasn't expecting that because I purchased these same shoes two years ago and they seem to be wider.

But overall, they perform well. Completely waterproof while snowshoeing/hiking and are durable for long summer hikes on rocks as well. Look great as well!

By:

salomon makes some great shoes, these just didnt work for me. they're really wide and hard to get the right fit on a normal width foot. if you have a wide foot, these shoes are probably sweet for an all season, all weather, all around trail running shoe.

Lots of Toe Bang

By:
May 8, 2009

Fist off the XCR rocks. You can dunk you foot in water up to your ankle and the inside of the shoe remains dry. The tread is good for river beds and ascending boulders, however it does tend to slip on dry dusty decents and scree. The lacing system provides a secure sung fit however does not allow to tie the shoe with a heal lock. I personally have experienced a lot of toe bang and feel that the box is too narrow and too ridgid. My foot is fairly large(13US) but relatively normal arch and width. Overall its a decent shoe just might not be the right shoe for people with larger feet.

Write your question here.I'm trying to understand the difference between these XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX and the XT Wings GTX, as they are pretty similar in price and weight. I'm looking to get something for outings involving 60% hiking, 20% trail running and 20% road running. Thanks

The XA pro's are designed more specifically for trail running and hiking. The difference mainly is the XA's have less cushioning to give a lower center of gravity for your foot. A salesman explained that the theory is that the trail will provide some of the cushioning. The XT wings are more of a hybrid road and trail shoe because they have more cushioning under the heel. From my own experieince trying both of the shoes on, I found that the XT wings felt more like a traditional running shoe with its amount of cushion while the XA's felt like a trail shoe. If you want to be doing road running, I would recommend the XT wings.

Great shoes, but I'm not a fan of the color choices

By:
August 8, 2009

I've had my XA's for a year and a half now and there's not much to complain about. They keep my feet safe from the elements and grip fairly well, considering the lack of an aggressive sole pattern. The quick lace system is also nice when you're feeling too lazy to tie a pair of shoes or boots.

I wear mine all the time when I'm camping, outside on my feet all day, and just when the weather is really crappy. They are a little warm for summer temps because of the gtx liner, though.

The lacing ssystem is quick and easy, but it takes away the ability to focus pressure at specific points. They do adjust to your feet after you've had them on and moved around a little, but this may not be a problem for everyone. Mine have also started to squeak a lot when I'm walking around, but I can't remember when this started.

The one thing I wish Salomon would do is offer a color scheme that isn't so dark and dreary. I've never really been a fan of dirt and moss color schemes. I feel weird wearing them in civilization because of the colors. A little less dark gray and black would be nice.

Awesome Shoes in Black/Black

By:
November 7, 2008

I have bought Salomon's in the past and I loved them. This pair is a different story for me, in my experience with these shoes there was a squeak in the sole built in. I returned them to BackCountry with ZERO hassle, amazing customer service. I can't say enough about that. They sent me out a new pair without even receiving the defective ones, thats customer service. Anyway, I received the second pair and it was the same story, the right shoe had a squeak in the sole again. Obviously, it is me not the shoes, I must walk weird or something like that. I think I walk bearing my weight on my right leg and it is causing the squeak. I am going to give the shoes the full five stars because it is a fantastic shoe but it did not agree with me specifically.

Favorite shoe

By:
March 23, 2009

Before a hike, I always spent a ton of time calculating out how dry the trails would be to decide which shoe/boot I should wear. If it was spring time, or if rains were expected I would begrudgingly dust off the heavy hiking boots for their one redeeming quality - waterproofness. I hate these boots. With the Salomon's in my closet I don't have to worry about trail conditions. I am ready for anything. They are amazingly waterproof thanks to the Gore-Tex, have great grip, are comfortable, and do a great job at keeping my naturally sweaty feet dry. Oh and don't worry about grinding your palms off on the trail because of your shoes coming untied - these shoes have an excellent Quickfit lacing that hasn't failed me.

Good trail shoe and winter trainer

By:
October 31, 2008

reasons you might need this shoe:
-you've come down in a puddle with your left foot and the top of your oncoming right foot gets soaked with the spray (why don't those trails ever dry out)
-you've run in 15 degree temps and the wind seems to blow right through your toes
-you do that quick step/jump/hurdle/tip toe to avoid roadside slush because you still have 4 miles to go and still want reasonably dry feet
-you *almost* roll your ankle(s) repeatedly when forcing your road shoes on the trail
Well, those become non-issues with this shoe, but you'll get these new issues:
-a ride like a suv, forget long distance road running in them
-if its not cold out your feet will get hot (gore tex can only do so much)
-when its pouring (yes, they will get soaked eventually without gaiters) these hold the water in almost as good as they keep it out, a whole new level of *squish* awaits you
-that's a lot of money for sneaks

All-Around performer

By:
January 7, 2009

I've put over 100 road miles, 40 trail miles and 10 rain/snow miles on these snow far, and they've performed to expectations. There are lighter shoes out there, there are more breathable shoes, there are beefier shoes, but these beat all when it comes to all-around use. These make good shoes for road running, great shoes for trail running in any conditions, and are a solid pair of day hikers. The Gore-tex insert combined with low-gaiters kept my feet dry for 45 minutes of following my nephew around in shin deep snow. The only dampness I've noticed in wet/snowy weather has likely come from my own sweaty feet, and it's never been cold/uncomfortable. These aren't ideal hot weather shoes with the Gore-tex, but I live in San Francisco and don't often deal with temps over 75. They're on the heavy side (~34 oz/pair in my size 13), but I appreciate that solid build on rocky trails. The stock insoles are okay, but I switched them for Orange Superfeet after feeling the sharp, baby fist-sized rocks a little too acutely on some of the trails I hike/run. The inserts added .5 oz in weight but solved that issue. Buy several pairs of specialized shoes if that's your wont, but if you just want one pair for many uses, I think you'd be happy with these.

Got these shoes a couple months back and have put them through a gauntlet since then. I couldn't be more pleased. These are light and breathable shoes that dry well and perform magnificently on Missouri trails be it dirt, rocks and roots or mud. Salomon has a great eye for tough functional gear and these shoes are no different. It'll be a sad day when these get retired but all the memories will help me overcome the travesty. If you're serious about covering terrain effectively and comfortably these shoes are a great choice, not to mention Salomon's warranty program is excellent if some unfortunate fate should befall your feet. Take to the wilds with confidence and joy each time I put 'em on.

Nice Upgrades from Last Year

By:
November 7, 2008

I have about 400 single-track trail miles in last year's model. They made one change for the better in this year's model. The lacing loops used to be plastic and would bruise the top of your foot during 2000+ ft descents. Now they are synthetic material, but they still cinch up evenly just fine.

Excellent shoe at keeping the water/cold out, but once the water gets in they do a good job at keeping it in.

They start to get warm when the outside temp gets above 75-80 degrees.

They work great in wet, cool conditions. The tread is set up, so that they don't collect/hang on to too much mud/debris.

I did roll my ankle inward hard in this shoe once, but I don't think it was the shoes fault, as my foot landed on the side of a rock.

I had not trouble with the Kevlar lacing system. In fact it removed all lacing troubles. I have heard of two incidents where the Kevlar lacing broke and would leave the user stranded.

Would definitely purchase another pair.

Lilstomp2,The materials and construction of the XA Pro 3D Ultra and it's predecessor XA Pro 3D GTX are almost identical. Lacking, chassis, liner, out sole, and construction haven't had any evolutions. Both models used a triple density EVA for cushioning. Now Salomon is calling this material Energy Cell, it is supposed to a new / remarketed triple density EVA that provides more cushioning. The new model is also available in a wide width. Bottom line - this is one of Salomon's best trail shoes. They have tweaked it a little so you will upgrade, but it is still the great fitting performing trail shoe we have grown to love.Mahalo, Sumo

Im on my 2nd set and i Love these things. The only downside is that they can be a little hot. That being said, I did wear then in 124F (wet bulb) this summer and it wasn't too bad. shoes are true to size, no weeknesses in manufacturing. Solomons have a smaller virtical tow area at least in my openion. I find i have more control than with other brands. please note that this is just an openion and many people prefer the more space.

Once again..

By:
December 22, 2008

I believe I had last years model as well (Yellow, grey, black) and they definitely keep your feet comfortable and dry. Although last years model did get quite stinky after a bunch of hikes at North South Lake in the Catskills area, but nonetheless great traction and support.

Ill take the other guys comment on cleaning these sneakers and hopefully I'll now get to wear two pairs in different colors instead of one!

Great Shoes - Small problem

By:
May 14, 2009

I've noticed that Salomon redesigned their lace system hoops (eyelets)
Unfortunately, on this particular shoe there was a point of friction that wore the lace off in weeks. It seems that the new eyelets are more prone to defective manufacturing and consequent malfunction. I wonder if that is a recognized problem?

Otherwise the shoes are perfect - light, comfortable and waterproof. Great for fall, spring trekking.

I just ordered my 4th pair of the Salomon XA GTX. I have a bunion

I just ordered my 4th pair of the Salomon XA GTX. I have a bunion on my left foot that after several months of use the shoe breaks through where the bunion is at. Any suggestions?

yeah, get the bunion cuttoff. Anything you buy is going to wear through there. Take care of your feet and they'll take care of you!

Great, until wet.

By:
October 8, 2009

I loved these shoes from the moment I bought them, wore them around in the rain all day, and my feet were dry and happy.
Then one day I made the mistake of wearing them in a canoe, immersed a foot by accident, and was reminded of the greatness of Gore-Tex. What is out stays out. What goes in stays in.
They've been wet for a week now, refuse to dry, and smell like mildew. I'm disappointed, a bit angry, and feel slightly cheated out of my money. The shoes, other than that, are really great. I shouldn't have wore them in the canoe, yes, but if you're running along and step into a slightly deeper puddle without realizing and water gets into the shoe---you're toast. Soggy toast.

Salomon Trail Shoes

By:
March 2, 2009

I am very impressed with my own pair. So far, they have gone through most rugged excercises, and still fit, form, function, and look great. If Solomon does not compromise quality for cost reductions on their current and future products, this brand will continue to get tremendous respect from consumers.

I Like

By:
May 6, 2009

I like

Got the wrong size and exchanged them, I had some other Salomon's that were good shoes, but these needed to be a 1/2 size bigger than my other pair. I wear them hiking, I like having waterproof at this time of the year and in the fall due to snow and rain. I wore them through a bunch of snow on a hike last weekend and my feet stayed very dry. My only gripe with these type of shoes? To hot in the summer or in any hot weather....So they don't get worn to often in summer....I wear Montrails with nothing but mesh during the summer hikes...

Compared to normal (road) running shoes, these shoes would best be classified as stability due to the posting (more dense foam) at the rear. However, within the category of trail shoes, these lie fairly close to the middle with regard to stability against overpronation.

Great Shoes

By:
March 18, 2009

Love this shoes. I have ran in different terrains and they are unbelievable. My feet stayed dry. I have wide feet, normally I wear 10.5 Wide, I bought Size 11 and have plenty of room for my feet.
Tying a shoe not a problem anymore with it's easy string system.

Mt. Fuji

By:
September 3, 2009

I was sitting on these babies in hopes that I would have a real chance to test them out. The opportunity came on an all nighter up Mt. Fuji, Japan. Through cold, heavy rain, thick and loose gravel these beasts held up. After 12 straight hours of hiking up and down I had 0 blisters. I allowed myself a self-indulgent scoff at the mountain after I had made it safely down. My comfort was in large part due to these great shoes.
I have especially flat feet and these were comfortable, dry, and supportive throughout the whole journey.
Hope this is helpful to my fellow cave-man-footed humans out there.

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

By:
November 7, 2008

Twice now I've worn these shoes on hikes greater than 20 miles with a light backpack. Uphill each time has been more of a hike with little running however I enjoy scrambling downhill as fast as the terrain will allow, with less weight on my back coming down as I've depleted my water and food. These shoes have hurt my feet more than ANY other type of shoe I've worn in many years!!! I have high arch's and if you do too I do not recommend these shoes without orthotics. These shoes were designed for people with flat feet and you'll probably still require an orthotic!! Each time I've worn these shoes my feet have ached for well over a weeks time recuperating from the abuse. As a note I'm both an avid hiked and runner. Due to the cost of these shoes I'm very disappointed with their performance.

tough call Terry, I dont consider my feet to have high arches and I notice that these soles are flatter than my Bowerman Nike's.I know flat feet tend to overpronate so I can offer that they are pretty stable even after a year of use. I actually notice my foot being "righted" when landing a little off (which is 90% of the time when trail running) since the shoe wants to land flat.

3rd Pair

By:
December 6, 2008

I have these shoes, last years model and the non gore-tex model. They are hands down some of the best shoes I have ever owned. They fit to the shape of my foot very well and are very comfortable. I use the gore-tex shoes for walking to class when it is wet out and or snowy and they are almost like wearing boots. Your feet stay dry and comfy. I also use these shoes for backpacking and all sorts of outdoor exploration. The only questionable thing is that they don't have Vibram soles, so they don't have out of this world traction. They are also not fun if you fall in the water with them on, the gore-tex keeps the overflow water in for a while. The cool thing about these shoes though is if they get stinky you can fill them up with some hot water and tide with bleach, let them soak overnight, rise them out and they are good as new! Hands down, awesome shoe. Also if something breaks on them, Salomon will replace them!

Great if you have high arch.

By:
April 23, 2009

I really wanted to like these shoes...Heard nothing but great things about them...However the shoe is quite narrow and has a pronounced arch support. My arch's would hurt from the pressure after just a few minutes of walking or standing. Never had any problems before with North Face, Nike, New Balance shoes. Quality wise these are top notch, much better than my North Face GTX shoes.

Reccommended trail runners

By:
November 24, 2008

Overall, I'm pretty impressed with these shoes so far. I've worn them for several 10+ mile mountain trail runs. They seem a little stiff compared to my cushy road runners, but I suppose that's to be expected for trail shoes in general. Ditto for feeling a little on the heavy side. On the flip side, I appreciate their rugged protection against rocks, etc.... On one rainy run, they did get soaked inside and out, and took longer than I expected to dry out, given the gortex material. Overall, happy so far.

Not quite what I expected but

By:
May 2, 2009

Overall quality is high, its build and styling. Fit is fine especially in the toe area which is plenty roomy since my feet are somewhat wide. But the high-tech lacing is something one has to get used to and the built-in arch support is not adjustable. I had to cut them off, there is no way to adjust it gradually.

January 7, 2009

I have the older model of these shoes and liked them so much I bought two pairs of these in different colors. These shoes are dang comfy and they are VERY waterproof. I've walked in water almost up to the ankles and my feet stayed dry. Makes others jealous!

5 pairs and keep buying more

By:
January 16, 2009

On my 5th pair of these shoes. I started wearing these shoes to wash cars. I own a car washing company and my feet were always getting wet. So i figured I would try out the gortex. Surprisingly this shoe is so comfy. It fits my size 13 perfectly. I began wearing these all the time. NO MORE NIKE for me.

Excellent wet traction and on snow and ice. Shoes also have a smart lace system. Easy on and off with a quick pull. Never had any strings break.

Dont even consider any other shoe besides this one. It has a nice toe rubber that adds great protection while doing rocky climbing. Shoes also dry really fast when completely soaked from crossing streams.

Best SHOE EVER!

Great Shoes

By:
February 4, 2009

Love the shoes they are very comfortable and goretex works well, been out trail running twice now one time with snow on the ground and feet stayed warm and dry. but wish i would have ordered a 9.5 instead of a 10. they run a little big compared to my other shoes.

Love them!

By:
June 19, 2009

I couldn't be more pleased with these shoes. They stayed perfectly dry even when running through mud, wet grass and puddles. Great traction and very comfortable. Yes, they are less breathable due to the gore-tex, but they really felt pretty good to me in the heat, I was pleasantly surprised. The quick lacing system is especially nice. As for size, they do tend to run a bit bigger, I normally wear 9.5 road shoes, I got size 9 for these and they fit well.

Great. My second pair of Salomon Trail Shoes and they are every bit as good as the first. No break-in needed. So comfortable I wear to work (I spend 12 hours a day on my feet). Went rock-wall climbing with them and can't wait to hit the trail with them.

The worthy successor to my Chamaleon II shoes

By: Backcountry.com Employee
May 24, 2009

My all time favourite heavy duty Merrell Chameleon II sneaker had to be put down and my boss recommended my a pair he had been used and approved highly, the Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX Trail Running Shoes.
Used them in rainy or damp conditions mountain or forest and at the end of my trips my feet were cozy and dry.
Perfect fit for me and the mid sole offers great cushion I specially like.
4.5 stars if I could only half a star behind my chameleon II.

Sweet Shoe After A Fit Modification

By: Backcountry.com Employee
May 6, 2009

My first foray into Salomon footwear and I am not disappointed. The 3D chassis works great for trail-runners that are neutral or slightly pronate and the EVA offers a great amount of cushion. Also, this Gore-Tex setup isn't as clammy as the previous models and kept me dry in a steady rain storm.

The Quickfit lacing system is easy and durable, but it can take some fiddling with at first to find the correct amount of tightening. Leave it too tight and your arch may not like you.

Also, I have a high A width with a 11.5 right foot and a 11.25 left foot. This shoe fit a little big on the length in an 11.5 with the width being close to perfect. A thicker insole fixed that though. Size a half size down on this one and don't go in this shoe if you are an upper "D" width or higher.

9 month overview

By:
October 3, 2008

I had gotten the previous years model for Christmas and essentially worn them everyday since then (it being october now). I have used them for everyday wear mainly, but they see their fair share of gravel trails, single tracks and rough hikes. they have seen some 5.8s and 5.9s rock climbing too. overall, i have always liked salomons but these have not shown much wear or tear. the soles are the only thing getting worn really because the orange nubs on the bottom are only glued on. everything has held up pretty well with all the abuse i have put them through. the only drawback is the high price for them
