The Salomon Men's XA Comp 3 GTX is the weatherproof version of Salomon's classic trail running shoe. Whether you're a competitive adventure runner or just out for a jog, the Comp 3 GTX's Gore-Tex XCR will keep your feet dry and comfortable. Salomon's patented 2-D chassis places a shaped plastic shank under the Comp 3's insole that controls twisting on variable surfaces. The XA Comp 3's toothy, Running Contragrip outsole blends several different hardness combinations with a toothy tread to give outstanding traction over a wide range of conditions. You'll appreciate the open-cell structure of the Ortholite insole on long, strenuous runs, since it allows your feet to breathe better than traditional insoles.
Bottom Line: The Salomon XA Comp 3 blend of stability, ventilation, and weather protection make trail runs safer and more comfortable.
I have not found a better shoe. Been looking for about 8 years now.
Pros: Great fit. I wear a size 12 which is pretty much standard for me. I have slightly narrow feet for this size and the lacing system does the best job of securing my foot that I have found. The lacing is quick and I have a hard time going back to laces. (except boots) The traction is very good, nothing works on ice or wet river rock. Lighter than most other waterproof trail runners. Tough shoe especially the uppers. Keep you dry when running into puddles or when it is raining on a hike. Good enough to run 5 miles on a track or 50m sprints. I wear these for practically everything from running, work, church, hiking, etc. Only time I change shoes is for soccer, biking, or when I need boots/dress shoes.
Cons: Nothing is perfect. Laces break, it is going to happen just a matter of when. Don't mountain bike in these, at some point the lace will catch a pedal or a toe clip or something and snap. The laces are 7 bucks and once you do it you can replace them in about 10 minutes. The replacement laces are not the same though as you cannot seal the end at the bottom. They last about a year being used for everything. The soles start to go out, getting thin and not providing the protection from jumping or climbing on rocks. Also the gore-tex will get a hole somewhere by a year. The sole can also start to detach.
Tip: You can tie the laces where they ripped often instead of replacing them. It will at least get you back.
Overall: Like i said I have not found a better shoe. The support of the shoe, waterproofness, and all around usability make this my current shoe of choice.
I don't wear these for running, but for hiking, cross training and every day use, they are great.
pros- fit narrow feet well. Great waterproofing. The lacing system gives a fast and tight fit (important in the rain and snow where your hands might slip while lacing conventional laces, or the laces themselves might freeze and slide out of a knot.)
cons- the laces, when they break, aren't very fun to replace. You could try to use conventional laces, which I'm sure would work just fine, but if you want the same convenience and order a pair of replacement kevlar laces, make sure you read instructions online and set aside a good 30 minutes. I've broken three laces (2 on this pair, and one on a previous Salomon model). Because the laces are so thin and wire like, they've ripped through two of the loops that hold the laces in place. Once that happens, you can wear them around, but you can't run or hike in them.
Oh Man! I bought these today at Eastern Mountain Sports, Concord Mall, Delaware for $115! Now I get online and find out that they are 07s and should be a lot cheaper (??). $57.00??? I mean, I don't mind at all that they are from 2007, I actually like its looks better than the current model I saw on the salomon site. However I definitely mind whether I should not have paid 115 for them. Have not worn them and will return if this price of 115 was indeed crazy. Shame cuz I really loved them. PLEASE ADVISE!! Thanks in advance.
These are easily the best pair of shoes I've ever owned. Just putting them on and feeling the lacing system conform to MY foot assures me of support and comfort. I would trek these babies through the grass and mud every day, and by the end of each day, they'd be spotless without my even having to clean them. The best part, though, (aside from the excellent waterproofing), is the increase in control I feel when running. With no other shoes do I experience this degree of stability and responsiveness. I find myself moving my feet much faster simply because these shoes permit it, and they constantly encourage me to go faster, what with their contagrip traction and all. My advice: buy this shoe NOW, ask questions later.
Hiked for 30 minutes, in the rain, 2 days ago and for some strange reason, my salomon's got soaked!!! First time this happened to them (about 1 year old shoes and have done this hike quite a few times). They are still wet and starting to smell sour - any advise please?!?
You say that they're about a year old: in my experience, these shoes only last about a year before they start to come apart--like every other well-built shoe I've ever run a lot in. Gore-Tex also has a limited functional life-span, and being down in wet conditions and being beaten up by rocks and sticks and such only speed the aging process of the material.
I also find that when I run through streams, deep puddles, deep mud, and/or snow my feet get wet because the shoes fill with water/wet material, but I trust that you ruled that out as an explanation...
100%. 10/10. However you want to say it, these shoes are perfect. They are 100% waterproof. They are breathable but still warm in the snow/ice. I've used these on mud, ice, snow, dirt, mud on ice, water on ice, ice on water, rapelling, hiking... these shoes are my absolute favorite. The excellent traction has saved my butt many times. They're also nearly indestructible. I'm extremely demanding and harsh on my shoes, and they almost look brand new still. I would still by these shoes if they were $300, cause you won't ever have to buy another pair. The ortholite insoles are so comfortable that I also wear these shoes as slippers.
If God wore shoes, he would wear the Salomon XA Comp3 GTX trail runners.
how long a pair of these have lasted for me. I use to be a competitive trail runner and these shoes are too heavy for that. But I won a pair and used them for short summer approaches in the Canadian Rockies. But since I have been spending more time in Southern Utah, I find they are my primary approach shoes for Red Rocks and Zion. On long rock climbs, many times your descent will not be conducive to coming back to the base of the route, thus you have to biner your shoes to your harness. These are light enough to make that work, yet, incredibly durable....I am already a huge fan of Salomon's lace technology and do trail run in a lighter version of this shoe, but appreciate the Gortex, toe cap and just plain ruggedness of this heavier shoe that serves as my primary approach shoe and lasts forever in the desert.
My feet get very anxious in shoes, I can't wear them for very long. These are surprisingly very comfortable and have been great on day hikes. The lace system is sweet. They also work well with my orthodics. Very grippy and looks good with some dirt/mud on them - no complaints. Pic is from Haleakala on Maui.
Question about SIZING: I am a size 9.0 in North Face trail runners. However, I am a size 8.5 in Adidas road running shoes. Can someone tell me about Salomon sizing where I would fit?? Thanks!
Actually, I think they run a little big. I bought them at a store and the salesperson said so and I found it to be true. I usually wear a 11.5 or 12 and I got an 11.
I bought this shoe for trail running - but returned it after a couple weeks as it is just a bit too heavy and stiff for "real" running. If you're looking for something to stomp around in the woods this would be perfect with its waterproofness, serious tread, and high-tech lacing system (bombproof and user-friendly)
I beg to differ--I definitely do some "real" running in these bad boys. A couple of my favorite trails have some rather exposed hairpin turns and long straight stretches where you can pick up a lot of speed, and I have never felt more sure-of-foot than when I'm in my XA Comps. That said, I do agree that they're not a light shoe. I hear that the non-Gore version is lighter (but not waterproof).
I originally got these bad boys to slip on during the winter months. I ended up doing a couple 14 mile trail races in them in thirty degree weather. I am not a picky man, but they fit well, were comfortable and are still going strong. The Goretex can be a little warm in summer. The lacing system is fantastic and stays tight after hours of use. So convenient and waterproof that they sit at the back door for slipping on to take out the dog in inclement weather, or just dewey grass.
The Salomon ski boot last has never been a good match for my foot, and I was skeptical of the concept of a Gore-Tex shoe, but these things are so amazing that I'm about to order a third pair but thought I'd write a review first.I usually have to start every trail run with a road run, and these shoes handle asphalt pounding much better than any of my various Adidas and Puma trail shoes ever have. Once on the trail, they handle every condition phenomenally. And I mean it. Slick wood, metal steps, ice, snow, mud of every consistency, gravel--it doesn't matter. In hundreds of miles of running (wearing two pairs of shoes apart in the process), I have had exactly ONE instance where I slipped and fell, and in that case, the entire section of trail collapsed under me, so the shoes can hardly be blamed for not keeping me upright on moving dirt. I am totally sold on the tread, the uppers, the lacing system, the whole nine yards.
P.S. These shoes are so comfortable that I even just wear them around town (especially after I've beaten them to a pulp on the trail) with the laces loose.
The detail is another version of the shoe that is no longer available. Same shoe though. Check out zappos for the full detail of both colors available. Better deal here though. http://www.zappos.com/n/p/p/7332252/c/153306.html
I've owned Salamon ski boots for 25 years, both alpine and nordic. In 2001 I bought a pair of their standard winter boots in Moscow, Russia and they're still in great shape. Last year I bought these shoes, and they didn't disappoint me. I live in Kodiak, so I am in the rain almost everyday. My feet are dry and happy. I even like these shoes in the snow - 6 inches or less. The lace system is quick, easy and durable. I'm not an expert runner, but I'm 31 and have had 5 knee surgeries. My knees never complain after a jog on pavement, or on the mountainous trails. After owning these shoes, I threw away my Nikes. My only other running shoes are Asics... for what that's worth. Wear these with a Smartwool sock, and you'll be one happy camper.
I have been wearing XA Comp GTX's for the past 4 years now. They're awesome shoes, wicked comfortable, look great, and highly effective in a wide range of elements. However, I typically go through a pair a year. I use them for daily use and light hiking, and just about every pair started to fall apart at the 12 month mark. The outer fabric starts to tear along the outer toes, the heel comes unglued, and the pull cord on last years models snapped at 14 months.
Let me state that I am in not overly abusive in my wearing - trail running 4 days a week, daily use in work and around town.
I have the black-autobahn's this time around and after 6 months they're still hanging in there. As someone else noted, the yellow along the heel has chipped off and looks pretty lame, but that's just cosmetic. The shoes themselves are holding really well for the time being.
I am in love with Salomon footwear, just wish these badboys would hold up a bit better in the long run.
I love the shoes, but they seem to have a narrow toe box and are too tight in the forefoot. The lacing system is very cool and works well. I especially like the harder toe area as I run in an area where there are a lot of roots and I stub my toe every run it seems like. The shoes are too new to really give a great report yet. I am heading out now for another trial run with them. The real test will be the JFK 50.
Salomon make awesome trail runner. This one is no exception. With the GorTex lining and the quick lacing system it's certainly done job in conditions so far.
I love these shoes there my second pair. I didnt think the plastic lace retension device (the reason I bought them)would last but it out lived the bottoms of the shoes. They dont loosen up either. They are pretty comfortable and fit and finish is fine. They slip on and off fast and easy, thats the best part next to the lace clasp.
These shoes are comfortable when you first put them on and the lacing system is great. Running on the trails feels awesome in these shoes and the gore-tex makes it even better especially in areas as rainy as mine. Grip is awesome no slippin' and sliding through extra muddy areas. Running out on the road is okay. I'd recommend a different shoe like some asics if you only run on the road. They are still comfortable though but I just can tell they are made more for the trail. Still great shoes. Definitely recommended.
I have put about 100 miles on these and I am very happy with their performance on a variety of terrain. They do keep your feet dry and the tread gives a lot of confidence as I climb or descend trail. The color of the shoe is a good OD green/grey which I like, but I had the weirdest experience on my first run. I straped on the runners and put on my normal running gear including my Jublo Legend sunglasses. I was having a good run in the bright sun when I looked down and my Salomons were a bright rasberry purple! I kind of freaked out- thinking I looked like bozo the clown, until I lifted my glasses and the shoes were OD green/grey again. Obviously the light reflected off the high tech material, and that is visable through my filtering glasses, is only in the purple wave lengths. Cool- mood shoes! Happy running in the sun produces a joyful purple shoe.
they are comfy, great looking, great lil' quick zip instead of laces for an easy getaway. i have noticed that the yellow is starting to chip/flake off already around the sole after a month and moderate use biking/walking. other than that, i would have given them a 5 star review.

Excellent built and extremely confortable. Stays dry and provides excellent back support. No cons yet since I have been using them for a couple of weeks only.
This shoe was awesome out of the box. When I got them, I slipped them on and took a run through the trails in my neighboorhood, and they performed admirably. However, I bought them for disc golf. After 4 months, the tread began separating from the bottom of the shoe pretty badly from the force of rotation from driving a golf disc.
From my running and hiking adventures, they were awesome shoes, comfortable, sturdy, water proof, and protective. They just are good for disc golf.
This was my first pair of trail runners and I am so glad i bought the Salomon XA's the gortex lets you run in the rain, and during all weather conditions. I bought a second pair just for work. I'm constantly outside and one of my biggest complaints was having my socks wet within the first hour of work. These hold up like a dream, and always keep you dry. The quick lace system is awesome and durable
I've bought 3 pairs now, and continue to look for more that are on sale. These shoes have it all. Comfort, stability, waterproofing, breathablity, and great looks. I've read some peoples reviews that say they fall apart after long wear on asphalt. Hello dummies, these are trail shoes, they are meant for dirt, and water crossings, and rocks. And when used correctly they will last for a long time. They will treat you good as you treat them. I clean them after really muddy/dirty hikes with nikwax techwash, and I spray nikwax waterproof on them as well. Perhaps a good clean is fine with no waterproof spray, but again I love these shoes and i know you will too! Enjoy!
I live in the NW and use the shoes for ignoring the big puddles, rainy weather, and for coaching soccer on wet grass. The shoes are fabulous. I spent two hours in the driving rain last Wed night setting up soccer goals, out in mud and wet grass, and my feet stayed perfectly dry. I've had them only a month or so, though, and I already had to glue down two treads that were coming up on one side. Sort of annoying to already be doing repair work on brand new shoes.
pro's: relatively light, durable, comfortable, cool looking con's: hot, not super well ventilated (but they're waterproof gortex, so i wasn't expecting breezy)
I've been running on these guys for a few months now and like them very much. These are my first pair of Salomon running shoes, and will definitely purchase the brand again in the future - especially if all of their shoes feel as good on the feet as these.
This is my 3rd pair of Salomons and they all have been excellent. They fit very true to size and are very comfortable. They lacing system seems to really help the shoe hug your foot. I haven't really put these shoes through the paces quite yet but I did seek out some puddles to test the waterproofness. They performed excellently as expected. I also liked the fact they didn't have the big rubber toe that's on a lot of Salomons these days.
I wouldn't give stars since I can't say anything good or bad about performance, but this site forced me to. Unfortunately, I have to add this shoe to the long list of shoes that won't work for a 13 EE. Hopefully some day more companies will want me in their shoes.
This shoe is crazy comfortable. I like shoes that are not too narrow and solomon always has decent room in the toe box. The foot bed is very supportive and the laces (once you get used to them are quick and evenly distribute the tension across the entire lace track. They are also easy to adjust. I have been out in wet weather both on and off the trail. I use them mainly for winter running and could not be happier!
Great foot support. Light enough for the running I do. Comfortable the first time I put them on. I would buy them again in a heartbeat. In fact I am considering a second pair.
I'm fortunate enough to be able to travel for, mostly to ski destinations. This shoe is great for traveling light, as in it's the only pair of footwear you need aside from ski boots. The lacing system is easy to get on and off, nice when you're fingers are numb after a day of skiing, and you're feet won't get wet mucking around in slush and puddles. I haven't run in them yet, but I'd assume they work well for a jog or trail run, so you can leave your running shoes at home right there. Oh, and they are great for planes. Taking them off at the security scanner is simple (no laces) and it's nice to be able to pop them off easily on long plane flights. Anyway, I like them a lot.
I'm thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail and i just got a pair of these to replace my 600+ mile cheap new balances that were seriously blown out. Within four days and about 75 miles i have begun to destroy the Salomon's soles. There are chunks missing and the whole rubber section is coming unglued. There is a flaw in their construction; the tread is glued onto the foam sole and is not one contiguous piece, but is formed so that some of the foam is exposed. if you look at the picture, anything on the bottom that is not grey is foam and not rubber tread. In any case, its a real shame that it took me only four days to destroy the sole because i love pretty much everything else about these shoes. They are totally waterproof (wear gaiters if you want to stay dry while hiking) and the uppers are super tough. Lets clarify: i tore these up on one of the rockiest sections on the AT (northern Pennsylvania) doing a string of 20 mile days at speed and a 12-hour 30 mile day yesterday, all with a 25 pound pack. Not everyone will test the limits of durability to this extent, BUT, these shoes have failed the ultimate test, and you all should take note.
