Salomon Techamphibian Sandal - Men's - 2007

The Salomon Men's Techamphibian Shoes make a smooth transition between land and water—ideal for river guides, kayakers, or anyone else tapping into their inner amphibious nature. These technical water shoes protect your feet like a shoe, yet drain like a sandal. The synthetic mesh upper and Quickfit lacing won't absorb water, so you don't have to carry around extra weight until your shoes dry. The adjustable, convertible heel folds out of the way when you need a slip on for a quick jaunt out of your tent in the middle of the night. The Techamphibian Sandal's Contagrip sole grips slippery rocks or dirt to keep you upright.

Bottom Line: Combining the best properties of shoes and sandals, the Salomon Techamphibian feels at home in the water or on dry land.

great shoe

By:

5 stars because they do everything great and breathe like no other hiking shoe/everyday shoe, and for 80 dollars at first might seem a little steep for a mesh shoe, after almost 2 years of abuse this shoe is still my everyday/first go to shoe. They did a good job of keeping me upright on a sea voyage with some rather sickly conditions for half the passengers(20/40). They have gotten completely soaked and always quickly dry (east coast too.)-saltwater and complete mud suck and after a rinsing they always look very good in as a bar/dress shoe. BLACK/BLACK colorthey are a little beat around the edges-one tear recently from slotcanyon water hole rock, but stil my most comfortable shoe.Got me to a couple peaks, got me through a couple fishing trips-surffishing,deep sea fishing, canoeing and fishing from riverbank and rowboat. Lots, lots of camping, many desert mile(I think they shined in the desert with the breathability),hanging at the beach, driving long distances, and everyday use. Great shoe

Not comfortable

By:
October 20, 2005

The shoes seem well-made, but it was consistently uncomfortable on the top of my foot. Although this is more of a running shoe than Keen Newport H2's, you can't really run in either, the H2's are more comfortable water shoes.

Do they grip on slippery rocks?

I have found that only felt soles will grip onto slippery river rocks. Anything else, when walking a rocky bottom, is just an exercise in preventing an ankle injury as you slip all over the place. What's the deal with these. Do has anyone "really" waded upstream in these bad boys (i.e. fishing) and found them to grip like felt? Thanks.

Thanks. Good to know. Every other "sticky" water shoe I tried out there with a rubber sole always just had me sliding off rocks and stubbing my toes.

It is just a rubber sole so it will be like any other water shoe. Definitely not comparable to felt as far as grip.

Good idea, but not comfortable enough

By:
September 7, 2005

I bought this principally as a water shoe, thinking it would be more comfortable for long hikes or runs than my Keen Newport H2. The tongue is rough on this shoe, necessitating socks, which defeat its water purpose. The Keen is a better water shoe, although neither shoe is good for running.

Nice shoes

By:
June 6, 2006

These have mesh sides to keep all but the smallest gravel out, unlike sandals, which I won't wear. Very supportive sole is so sticky, it is somewhat difficult to move the tiller on my K1 - I may have to remove the no-slip strip on the footboard. They’re very comfortable for walking on slippery surfaces. They can be worn with or without socks, as there is an adjustable strap on the heel, you can cinch it tighter if you have no socks on. Restrained styling is a relief to my eyes.

These are one of the greatest products I have owned over the past few years. They look cool and keep your feet from sweating. I have owned 4 pairs and have had great luck with them all. You can run, hike, bike, river, or wear as casual drinking shoes. These are the most versatile shoes ever. If they show up on SAN again I will buy 3 pairs.

The Shoes Totally Rock

By:
August 3, 2004

When I got these shoes in the mail I was like, "woah," cause they look so freaking sick and tricked out. Then I put them on and my feet wigged out in Comfort City. These shoes are so sauced up with air holes that my feet never feel all closed in. Plus, with the velcro, bungee-cords and adjustment staps, they can fit snug...or loose and chillin'. They're even built with a collapsable heel so you can be all regular, or flip it down and go ghetto. These shoes are so sick that you need to pony up the cash right now and get you a pair. Best part is, BROWN deliver's 'em free!

I am ordering my second pair before they go and discontinue it on me.love em.

The Perfect Shoe

By:
October 6, 2008

I have abused these shoes and they are still clean enough to wear around town without looking like a bum. They are light weight and dry respectably fast. my favorite part is the amazing traction. I do canoe caving so my feet are usually wet when i start climbing. I have a friend who has an older pair and his have been through about 10 times as much as mine and are still kickin' it...same with my brother's.

Someone finally made a shoe that is made for the water. These replace perfectly all the sandals you've lost hiking the narrows, and all the pool shoes you've trashed wading at the local pond. These shoes not only don't hold water at all, but they're comfortable, breathable, and super rugged. The quick-pull kevlar lacing and adjustable heel tension keep these things on no matter what the water world throws at you, and the tread on the bottoms is super sticky for all those slimy/wet surfaces!

Air power

By:
July 10, 2003

I looked at these shoes for six months before I bought them; I wasn't sure how they would work out for me. I took a chance and have been pleasantly surprised. The first thing I noticed was you can feel the air passing through the vents as you walk. I typically wear big beefy hiking boots since I work in a warehouse; sandals are what we want to wear but due to regulations they are not allowed. This shoe walks that line between shoe and sandal. Offers enough to be a shoe, but breaths like a sandal. I have trail run in them, maybe that is pushing what you can really do - the sole is pliable which doesn't lend too well to rocks on the trail, none the less I have done it and not wearing sock either. Used them on rafting trips; two things were difficult on that trip - the shoe didn't want to slide around on the rubber raft so getting a foot hold is more of an inch worm deal, and the silt kick up while getting out of the river would find a resting spot under the insole - easily cleaned though. My pair had a manufacturer’s defect and some stitching came undone on both heel pieces. Easily exchanged. I love the collapsible heel, getting the morning paper or the garbage to the curb is quick.

July 14, 2004

These are great! I have had no slippage--on wet rocks, on moss-covered rocks, with the heel strap, or with the lacing strap. If you are in/around water during the summer, you will love these shoes. They will not bog you down in the water as they do not carry any water weight after you submerge them. They're super sticky on underwater surfaces. Tech Amphibs are light and will protect your feet unlike your Tevas. They're also great to wear around with no socks as they breathe very well.

Weird sizing, very narrow

By:
March 23, 2009

I wanted to love these shoes. I definitely like the concept and the way they looked. The insole being very loosely attached to the shoe was the only problem upon first inspection (this has been the case with every pair I've looked at as well). The size on these shoes is very problematic. I normally wear 10.5 or 11. ne of my feet is slightly larger than the other, but this rarely causes a problem, and I easily wear a 10.5-11 all the time. These shoes I went with the 11 first, as they are supposed to be a little narrow. The 11's were completely unbearable, and by toe knuckles bulged out of the shoe. I then went with an 11.5, and one foot was good, the other was still painfully too narrow. Backcountry no longer has anything over an 11.5, and a local sporting good store has a pair of 12's I'm going to try, but I don't think that will work, as one may fit, but the other may be too large. I tried a pair of North Face Padda's that fit fine in an 11, no problem, but I really liked the idea of the Techamphib, and am bummed at the weird sizing. Backcountry was very cool throughout this, and made return shipping and trying another pair very easy. I love this company and will recommend it to anyone.

Awesome hot weather/gym shoes

By:
October 17, 2008

I wear these to school, work, and the gym all summer long and they help keep my feet cool and comfortable. Toss in a decent, supportive insole and they are good for most athletic activities if you don't require ankle support. I'm on my 3rd pair and each has lasted at least 200+ days of wearing with lots of gym time.

The only drawback is that the heel adjustment never holds in place and the stock insoles have no arch support or cushioning.

THESE SHOES ROCK!!

By:
July 9, 2003

I use these shoes for running and exploring local rivers and creeks and for riding jet skis. The grip that this shoe has on my foot is really snug--my foot doesn't go anywhere. The soles are extra sticky and perform very well under water. I bought these shoes because I'm soon taking a backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon, and I expect that they will handle anything I can put them through. I've actually been wearing them daily without socks, and they don't smell at all! Trust me--my feet make shoes smell! Anyway, you need these for any outdoor activities that involve lakes, rivers, creeks, or waterfalls. They're definitely worth the money.

Too rough inside

By:
September 25, 2003

After reading the reviews I went ahead and bought me a pair for my future trip to South America. They are really tough made inside and gave me blisters on both feet after walking for 30 minutes in Brooklyn. I had to return home and change into something else. With the sock they are fine. But if I would want to wear socks in the water I can go with regular shoes as well.

An Amazing Shoe!

By:
July 23, 2003

My husband and I recently purchased the Salomon Tech Amphibian Shoe prior to our trip to southern Belize. This shoe is amazing! It required no breaking in and we used it to hike in the jungle, climb to the tops of waterfalls and tube through underground caverns. It was great in the mud and through creeks. The best thing at the end of our trip was that it washed up beautifully in the washing machine, air dried outside, and it looked like new. I've never worn a better fitting shoe, especially of this type!

Personally I'd keep looking. I've had major lacing problems with these shoes. It's a great design but I've only gotten a month to 6 weeks out of them until the laces literally shred to pieces. I ended up going to a shoe with a standard lacing system just because of that problem.

great for biking, water sports, even skateboarding

By:
July 28, 2003

I bought this shoe to use for rainy day bike commutes and it works perfectly for said activity. If I'm caught in the rain, no worries and I just rinse the shoes at home and let 'em air dry. I use the amphibians on the beach as well. Minor problem with sand collecting inside, but it all washes out. I prefer these shoes to teva-type sandals b/c they are closer to shoes and that means I can run, rock hop, bike, or just chill in them and the ventilation is great since the "portholes" breathe like a mutha.

Added bonus for me: I can hop out of the water and jump on my skateboard and just cruise. Sole is grippy even when wet and wind eventually dries them out as I ride. Good news all around.

I did remove the included insoles b/c I found my feet were chafing along the top of the shoe with insoles installed. More room without insoles and no loss of comfort when insoles removed.

Tech Tryout

By:
October 10, 2005

Tried these shoes on a long weekend canoe trip on the upper Potomac. They had a sturdy sole, good traction, excellent draining qualities and easy on and off. One negative was some heal scrapping when wearing them barefoot after extended shore time. Thankfully, regular and neoprene socks fit well given the adjustable heal. Another trade off is, despite the quick drying upper, the very comfortable insole takes almost as long to dry as a tennis shoe. Thus, the advertised use as a slip on camp shoe is only true if you don't mind it still being wet even after overnight drying. Overall, I would still recommend this shoe as a superior choice for rocky bottoms and shores, particularly over the thin sole versions of many water shoes and boots.

First Class on Class IV/V rapids

Having worn Tevas and old sneakers to go whitewater rafting in the past, I wanted something more substantial. I ordered the Tech Amphibians for my most recent whitewater rafting trip to the New River in West Virginia. While others in my party were constantly adjusting their Tevas and other footwear, my Amphibians were snug and comfortable, with great traction and stability. I must admit that now I wear them all the time as they allow my feet to breathe much more than just your regular pair of athletic shoes and provide more coverage and support than a pair of sandals. Overall, a great pair of shoes.

These shoes are great for those who're looking for sporty kicks that does double duty in the water and walk-about duties. The neat fold down feature of the heel, making the shoes an instant slip on shoe (think water clogs) is a major highlight feature...not to mention a big selling point with me. These shoes drained and dried easily, and offered far better support than other aqua booties on the market.

for lacing them which is better than regular tie-ups, velcro or slip-ons.
The heel setup alows you to slip them on for a short trip to get the paper, the mesh uppers mean they don't get hot and they look great. People always comment on them. No brainer on these.

I'm a girl, but I have giant feet (W11)and bought the men’s. I travel, A LOT, nothing extreme (hostels/trains/tours/lots of walking), but if your shoes suck, your trip sucks. Got tired of walking around in Docs where my feet felt like they were surrounded by hot concrete, and then flimsy flip flops just so they could breathe, then getting foot and ankle aches from no support. I just got these bad boys in the mail, I can tell they are the ultimate warm weather travel shoes. I’m wearing my pajamas AND my Salomons right now—testament to their comfort. I’m going to buy another pair in case they stop making them. Worth the 85 smackers!!!

November 24, 2003

These shoes are almost perfect -- with one HUGE flaw. They are excellent in every way, just as the manufacturer describes. They would also be extremely comfortable if they were a little more careful in constructing these shoes. There is a flap of material that is bunched up in a seam that lies directly over the knuckle of your little toe -- and it is big! I went on a 2 mile hike and my foot was bleeding by the end. A terrible experience. Really painful. I tried to cut this flap off and now the shoe is literally coming apart at the seams.

Amphibians Love the Pyrenees

I walked 500 miles from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic through the Pyrenees in June. The Amphibians worked great in hot dry coastal areas, crossing high passes filed with snow, on wet rocks in rain storms, fording snow melt streams and even climbing steep rock faces. The traction was wonderful and my one blister was probably due to negligence. I did need to tighten the back strap several times a day. I just bought two more.

In and out of the river, squeezing through slots, steep slogs with overloaded packs, boulder scrambling, etc. The Tech Amphibs are not perfect (some sand collects under the insole, grip on slickrock is a bit less than ideal) but they did everything I asked of them. Best of all for me was the adjustable heel strap, which held my very narrow heels in place and prevented the blisters I normally get there. After a week in the Escalante they are no longer pretty, but they have earned my trust and respect!

The buckles at the heel slipped and allowed the heel to loosen soon after I transitioned from a walk into a run. I was surprised, after previous good experience with Salamon ski and AR footwear. I tried the Pro Amphibs too, and they are worse, believe it or not: in addition to the heel loosening problem, the attachment points for the plastic lacing system bite into the top of the forefoot even with socks on.

I live in Hawaii and own a fishing boat. Love the Amphibians. They are great for getting ready to launch, while out on the boat or just cruzing to the beach. Get some.

LOVE THESE SHOES!

By:
July 19, 2004

Ordered the Tech Amphibian shoe for multiple uses - kayaking, surf fishing, wading and tons of others. I fell in love with them. Not only do they work great in the water, but they look good too. I find myself wearing them for everyday use (work great when washing the car). I highly recommend them. My only complaint is that my dog chewed through one of the laces and it had to be replaced (note to self - labs like to chew; place items out of reach).

Best Shoes Ever!

I wear these shoes for everything. Lightweight and tons of traction. I bought them to use as a hiking shoe, but have used them as my main athletic shoe for the last two years; Running, hiking, mountain biking, basketball, tennis, everything.

These shoes are comfortable and durable. Even having survived several episodes as a doggy chew toy. Buy these shoes.

Great for disc golf

By:
July 19, 2004

Bought these for my son to wear disk golfing. The local disk golf courses tend to be swampy and he had ruined several other pairs of shoes. They give enough support and dry out quickly. He's found them comfortable enough to wear for other activities.

They are as good as advertised

By:
July 22, 2004

I use my Tech Amphibian shoes when I am out in the lake, and out on my jet ski. They have preformed awsome and are exactly what I had hoped for in the shoe when I purchased them. Although they are not the as good as I expected on slippery rocksIi encounter in the lake, they have been great so far.

River Shoes

By:
August 19, 2004

I bought the amphibian shoes for an uncoming 2 week OARS trip through the Canyon. That test is in late September but already the flexibility of the shoe is great for me. My feet swell badly due to medication I have to take daily so the ability to unbuckle the rear of the shoe makes for easy entry and then I can adjust the shoe for maximum comfort. I am sure when it was designed, no one had swollen feet in mind but its a great answer to that problem. Thanks!

they let me down

By:
October 8, 2007

I bought these to hike the Buckskin Gulch slot canyon. I went just after some heavy rains and walked almost the whole way in knee deep water. These shoes started to fall apart after 3 days. The mesh sides came away and tore away from the last. This allowed small rocks in and I had to stop every hour to remove them . I returned them for a refund.

Wear Them Everyday

By:
August 20, 2004

Best shoes ever. Throw them in the washer. Get them wet. Slip them on, don't pull the heel up and wear them as quick sandle to grab something from the car. SUPER ventilated for the 100-degree plus days. Feet don't hurt. Light weight. Great grip on every surface so far. Looks cool. Quick cinch on the heel strap to snug the foot for a quick run. Never had so many people ask where I got my shoes. Great price on this site. Feet haven't barked yet.
One complaint, they don't dry as fast as I thought they would.

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!

By:
August 28, 2004

I truly believe that these are the BEST shoes I have ever owned. They are incredibly comfortable, even WITH my orthodics. They are extremely well made, and the $20.00 difference from the ones REI sells, well, that was the best part. I would definitely buy more, and will look to Backcountry.com for my future footware needs.

Great, with 1 limitation

By:
August 8, 2005

These shoes are stylish and accomplish their goal of being amphibious, but they are not the best shoes if you are walking more than short distances. I thought it would be nice to have a pair of shoes that are so ventilated that I could go without socks, but the inside seams will create blisters if you're active in these unless you've got some tough feet. I would guess these would be ideal for rafting/kayaking where you spend most of your time off your feet.

Rainforest foot wear

By:
December 13, 2004

I got the shoes just before going to Belize on our honeymoon. We went hiking and rappelling through humid jungles, spent a night deep in a dank cave and went tubing down rivers through jungle and caves.
These shoes gave me good traction, even when wet, and dried ( as much as anything could down there.)
Other people who had hiking boots, rented new ones every day, when I wore the same shoes for everything.
When not in the water you should wear good sox, and change them, to deter mosquitos.

Best Warm Weather Shoe. Period.

By:
May 21, 2007

As much as I love summer, it sucks to have to put on shoes if you're going to anything more than just bumming around. I love my flip flops, but sometimes they just won't cut the mustard when it comes to my outdoor adventures. If you've ever found yourself with such a predicament, look no further, the answer to your problems is right in front of you, and you will not be disappointed. I love these shoes. So does my father. If you ski you know Solomon makes a good product, and now you can turn to them in the Summer too. Don't feel like throwing on those fly waders? These will help you get through any fast moving stream with algaed rocks and won't get stuck in the mucky areas. Any time its hot and you need some support, turn to these trusty friends- they'll come in only second to your dog.

Great but not perfect

By:
July 23, 2008

I recently used these for an few days of canoeing and camping in the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota. They were great for portaging from lake to lake and made it easy to get into the canoe and hop back out. I also thought they were really comfortable.

However, there is a down side. They didn't dry quite as quickly as I thought they would, which isn't a big deal but kind of annoying. The second thing I have seen a few different posts - pebbles, sand, and small rocks. The would get into your shoes and I had a hard time getting them back out.

I'm also slightly concerned on how long they are going to last. I have a little spot that looks like it is rubbing and tearing slightly. I'm hoping they hold up because I really like using them, but I guess I'll have to wait and see.

Great shoe for the anti-sandal crowd

By:
May 4, 2005

Great shoe if you are, like me, averse to any and all sandals. As someone who just can't bring himself to be the sandal-wearing type (yes, that includes Tevas which are, quite frankly, simply one small step away from those leather things my mother made me wear when I was a kid), this shoe was the perfect compromise.

Great water/hiking/outdoors shoes - NOT BEACH SHOES

By:
April 29, 2008

Got these for a trip I was taking to the BVI. The were perfect to travel with (very light and collapsible), great for hikes (good support and cushion), and perfect for a carefree stroll through a rainstorm (water drains right out of them).

However, their one shortcoming is that these are not beach shoes. Sand gets in them VERY quickly, and once it's in, you've got to take them off and wash them to get it out.

Barring that one disclaimer - and the observation that they do not keep your feet warm if you are in cooler climes - these are great all-around summer hiking/outdoors shoes.

I didn't have any issues with chafing or a bad smell as reported by other users - and that's wearing them barefoot most of the time.

The lace up system is great, and the collapsible heel makes them perfect as deck loafers.

Bottom line - very versatile, very comfortable, and great styling. Highly recommended!

These are the real deal. We took them down to Havasupai Indian Reservation and walk/swam them for 10+ miles a day. Great support for hiking, excellent grip, and drained water really well. A little rubbing on the foot developed some sores, but that was the first time I'd worn them. Nothing a little athletic tape can't fix.

AMPHIBIANS ARE JUST THAT

By:
June 21, 2005

In all the dictionaries I used, I could not find any reference to shoes in the definitions of amphibian. Well, I think it's high time they took a look at Salomon Amphibians so they can update their dictionaries. I suggest there even be a picture of shoe included. So far, I have used the shoes to boat, fish, and stroll the beaches of South Carolina. They are wonderful. Not a single complaint.

The only pair you'll need for outdoor adventures.

By:
September 8, 2005

Used it at Yosemite Half-Dome (16.8m) and it performed beyond expectation. Spent at least 13hrs in them and didn't run into any problems, grip was great. Wore them on my water trip as well and it did what was stated. One gripe: because of the net, sand and tiny gravel tend to get stuck in the sole, making it uncomfortable. Small trade off.

The fold down heel is great for after pool exercise changing.

I received the best service and price on the net -- I'll be back

I bought these especially for a 90 mile canoe race in the Adirondacks that includes about 8 miles of carries. The shoe performed way past my expectations. The water drained out faster than any shoe I've ever owned while still having the support of a sneaker for running on the trail.

Great hiking shoe

By:
November 14, 2005

This is my second pair of tech amphib. Sizing down a half size from my Nike running shoes, these provide a secure fit. Last year I hiked many miles through Costa Rica. The terrain was rugged and often wet, but the shoes prompted no complaints. They are supremely lightweight and though they do not provide any wetness protection, they do not hold water either—which means stream crossings become a non-issue. I even spent some time hiking in the Whites of NH this fall. With the right pair of socks, these shoes are great even when temperatures are pretty cool.

Good, not Great

By:
September 26, 2005

I was extra excited to get these shoes because I can't stand having hot feet. The shoes are nice and cool, but the lacing schtick isn't great. The tongue of the shoe often gets on top of the shoe instead of underneath the sides of the shoe where it belongs.

Also, the ankle support leaves something to be desired. I wish the straps were a little smaller so my heel wouldn't come up from the bottom of the shoe when I walk.

All in all, it's a good shoe, but not the superman shoe I had hoped for.

Caused Plantar Fasciitis

By:
September 5, 2005

I loved these at first. I wore them a fair amount but not consistently all day, etc.

Then I went on vacation and brought them as my primary shoes (nice and lightweight). BAD mistake!

After 10 full days wearing these on my feet all day 10+ hrs each day these shoes caused my feet to hurt. I didn't really figure it was my shoes until later.

THESE HAVE LITTLE/NO ARCH support. This caused my heel to have shooting pain after about 2 weeks, I could hardly walk.

I'm really disappointed because these shoes are great otherwise, and I've never had any heel/arch problems before.

Now after Dr. appt I'm using special arch supports in my sneakers, icing my foot every night and taking lots of ibuprophen.

Not recommended.

Tech-Amphibs

By:
October 24, 2005

These are great pair of shoes. They have great airflow for hiking and are durable. If you’re a rock climber, you'll love slipping these on between climbs. If it’s a little wet out, you'll rarely slide on these treads. I’ve never been happier with a pair of shoes. The only complaint is that the buckle hits your ankle when it is in fold down position. The fix is to not wear them as tight, which is easy with the quick-laces. The sole airflow is almost nonexistent, so still wear socks people!

These shoes are excellent. I just completed a week of backcountry kayak camping in the Everglades. From rocks to muck, there are many different bottom types. I never slipped or even had the feeling that my shoes were going to get sucked off of my feet. An hour or so in the sun was all that it took to dry them completely.

2nd pair just as good as the first

By:
December 8, 2006

All to often, I buy something, wear it out and buy a "new and improved" or updated version of that same thing, only to be sorely dissapointed. Not this time! I had my first pair of Techamphibians for about two years and lived in those darn things. Took them everywhere and did *almost* everything in them. When they finally died, I worried that I would never be able to replace them.
I ordered the new ones and after one day, I felt like I was back in the same shoes, again. These are sturdy, durable, and comfortable shoes. Off-road, under water and on pavement, they give solid traction and suppport, breath very well, and dry out quickly. I am particularly pleased with the wet weather traction of this shoe, too.
If you don't own a pair of these, you're missing out.
