The Salomon Women's Techamphibian blurs the line between sandal and shoe. It protects your feet like a shoe, but drains water like a sandal. The synthetic mesh upper and Quickfit lacing won't absorb water, so you don't have to carry around extra weight while your shoes dry. An adjustable, convertible heel folds out of the way when you need a slip-on for a quick jaunt out of your tent in the middle of the night. Built for professional river guides, canyoneers, and adventure racers who make frequent transitions between wet and dry environments, the sticky Contagrip sole gives you traction over variable terrain.
Bottom Line: Shandals? Sandoes? Whatever you call them, you'll love them.
I bought these shoes to wear at our fishing camp and they have exceeded any of my expectations. They keep my feet cool, dry quickly, are unbelievably comfortable, handle muddy terrain well and wash easily (I just soap them down and spray with a hose).
Love these shoes!!! I've used them on a straight hike that ended at water and the entire time through to the end they were great. I've also used them for a hike that I had close to 30 water crossings in 10 miles. No problems whatsoever. While I was splashing across the river others were concerned with changing their shoes constantly at each crossing. Also I have other types of water shoes that would get rocks caught up under the feet, these get only a little bit of sand which the only time I can tell it was there was when I took them off in the end. Great shoes. Typically I wear a size 8 standard shoe and a 8.5 sport shoe, in these I bought a 7.5...twice. I could have used an 8 but I only wear a thin double layered sock to ward off the possibility of blisters.
im typically an 8 in athletic shoes, and a 7.5 fits me perfect here. they run a bit big, but because the back is adjustable, you can make them fit you perfectly. if you plan to wear them with socks, id get a 9.5. if not, a 9.
I bought mine 2002 and did lots of hiking. Later came back to Asia and used them to run because so light weight and the sole durable. I run in them almost everyday for an hour and they are still in perfect condition, and I mean the sole, the lace all that. Wow.
For skid resistance it gets a 5. Even on wet slippery rocks, it holds well with a bit of care. For keeping feet cool it gets a 5. For drying quickly and washing up well (by hand) it gets a 5. For the hiding pocket for the lacing toggle it gets a 3. Too small for its intended contents, and the zig zag topstitching unraveled in a day or two. It still works without the stitching but the toggle is needlessly big and there are those large Velcro tips on the laces that are unnecessary and must fit into the same hiding pocket as the toggle. Toggle is uncomfortable if left out of the pocket. And the lace tip Velcro pads flop around too much if left out of the pocket.
For comfort it gets a 5 from me but less from my husband who had to wear microfiber socks with his because it rubbed the ball of his foot. We have similar feet (wide front but low volume, small heel, high arch). For adjustable heel and quick lacing it gets a 5. And in wet (squishy, sink into type) mud they do not hold traction, but no shoe does so this is not a negative. Neither of us ever came close to falling so this is a great shoe for traction, and great for hiking in Hawaii both in swamp mud and on wet lava rock. Sand gets in some, but this was not a negative for either of us.
How fast these shoes can dry? I brought some other water shoes which clam they dry fast. I washed them after a day hike and leave them in the bathroom with fan on for overnight but they were still not dry the next morning. I hope to buy one that can really dry fast.
I think this is a great shoe. Comfortable and so easy to put on and go. My only problem is that the shoelace broke and I can't find anywhere to replace it. Most stores don't sell the laces. I went to the Salomon website and they have no contact info on the site. Has this problem happened to anyone else? Where have they replaced the shoelace? Despite the fact that they are kevlar, they still break.
Write your comment here...YES...WHERE are the shoelaces? I have had to replace three pairs of these shoes because I could not replace the shoelaces...How do you get hold of salomon to complain? and would it do any good?
...the world would be a happier place. These shoes are flat out the best water shoes I have ever had! Taking 36 teenagers on 4 day camping trips in SW VA can take its toll on any shoebut this Amphibian takes it all in like a walk in the park. Five hour treks up steep rocky slopes on an 8-mile AT hikeno sweat. Creek walking through a primitive Indian villagegravy. White water rafting the Nola Chucky River on one of the highest volume days on recordbreezy. Breaking camp at 8:30pm in the middle of a tropical stormits all in a days work, my friend! And all this with very little break-in time; that is pure perfection. Solomon better never discontinue this line, this is one Amphibian made to last! Nicole G.
My wife loves these shoes. She only has one complaint about them, the samll pebbles. The mesh does great for letting the water out and her feet breath, but smaller rocks, etc always seem to find their way into the shoe. Otherwise, very comfy shoes.
These shoes seem to be being made bigger over time. My pair from 2006 fits perfectly. The 2007/08 pair is a little big but still workable. The 2009 pair is too big! Yes, I would say go down a size.
These are great shoes! They have enough support and cushioning for a short run, they dry quickly due to the drainage ports, and are easily adjustable at the laces and the heel. the heel did take a little while to get used to. i love the fact that i can push the heel down and use these as mules. i would recommend these over the Karma's for the few extra dollars simply for the added support and cushioning.
A friend had these on our latest river trip and she loves them. Now that I have them, I love them too. They are a great hiking shoe to use when you know you'll need to cross rivers or for activities when you might need to protect your toes. I especially love the way the heel folds down so you can slip them on around camp. I'd definitely recommend. True to size, with or without a light weight sock.
These are wonderful...I wish I had them years ago...and they make kayaking in the muddiest of rivers a pleasure. They are cool, well-fitting, flexible and adjustable, and drain off water so fast you don't even know it's there.
Got these for my wife for some trekking she's going to be doing in and around around Southeast Asia in May. She has been wearing them daily to get a good break-in and just finds them to be comfortable in every way. I really appreciate the previous comments about them being sized small: she wears 8 1/2 and we got size 8 - perfect fit!
I found these shoes and used them for kayaking and they held up great! They have great tread for uneven surfaces and can be worn like a clog if you have to slip them on real quick and go. They have great ventilation and you can feel the air circulate as you walk (especially without socks!). I highly recommend these shoes for outdoor activities!! I have four pair and use them often. They say not to throw them into the washer but, I have done it in the past on the delicate cycle and they were fine.
I am on my third pair and I love that these also look great with socks and jeans like regular sneakers, compared to some of their more funky looking, water-friendly counterparts. I agree they run a bit large. They have enough support to run in if you choose to, and the back folds down so you can slide into them, which I actually do quite a bit. I got my husband and my mom a pair - my mom wore hers out from all the use and kept them at her lake cabin, where they were perfect for on the boat or a mountain bike ride!
These shoes are great for all terrain hiking. They are cool and stay fresh. Great for hiking in areas with mountain streams and lakes. No more stubbed toes or sandal edges catching on rocks. Good for white water rafting too.
These shoes were great for short hikes in a humid climate! The soles are rugged and sticky and the shoe was well ventilated. I'm buying a pair for every woman in the family! They are true to size.
I don't usually write comments on products, however, this shoe was so uncomfortable I have to let other people know. Why and how was it possible for this shoe to make it to market without someone noticing how the seams on the top of the shoes are sewn together in a big bunch? I barely got them on before feeling like I had two big pebbles stuck on top of my foot right where my foot bends! What's up with that? Didn't anyone at Salomon try the shoes on before mass producing them? Nice try Salomon...the shoes look great, now try making them with softer fabrics that don't bunch at the seams!!! I was VERY disappointed as I was hoping to wear those shoes on a 2 week hiking trip in Italy. Oh well...good thing I also have a pair of Merrells!
This is a great shoe! I purchased the Amphibian Salomon shoe for my nine day canyon hiking vacation & the shoes exceeded my expectations. After 65 miles of hiking (over 9000 ft in elevation), my feet were in great shape. The shoes were great for both the Zion Narrows, a hike up an active canyon river bed, and the hot, dry and sandy canyon hiking at Bryce Canyon. The one improvement this shoe needs is a way for the tiny river-bed gravel which is forced into the shoe by walking to escape and not get stuck in the perforated, spongy sole liner.
I love the Tech Amphibian shoe so much, I bought my daughter a pair! Perfect for gardening, kayaking, walking; with or without socks. The shoe really breathes well.
The women's tech amphibian shoe by Salomon is a winner. Super comfortable, easy on and off, this shoe is great for hiking around water, stream crossings, washing the dog, etc. Water drains quickly, and the shoes are cool in warm weather. The only drawback might be that they don't provide a lot of support, so couldn't really be considered a hiking shoe. But I would buy these again in a heartbeat, and best of all, no meat was used to make them!
I have used these shoes in streams and rivers and they have held up fine. Like other reviewers have said, sand and small rocks do have a tendency to get in the shoes but that would occur with any type of shoe worn in those conditions. It os best to remove the insole before using these in water for long periods of time as not to water-log them. Make sure to keep them in a well-ventilated area after use to dry them out (not recommended for the dryer).
If you are looking for a shoe for comfort, water, and street wear look no further - Salomon Tech Amphibian shoe is it! Looking for eye catching cool style - Salomon Tech Amphibian again wins hands down! Looking for a great shoe at a good price - you got it, Salomon Tech Amphibian is it! I cannot say enough wonderful things about this shoe or the price at BackcountryStore.com! Thanks Salomon and Backcountry!
I bought this shoe for my trip to the Big Island of Hawaii. I'm so glad I did because the terrain was treacherous. Lava rock EVERYWHERE. Going from kayak, to snorkeling, to hiking, was easy with this shoe and I was the only one on this trip who didnt get chopped up coming out of the water or on our hikes. The best and worst part was hiking 3 miles in the dark to watch the lava. It was pitch black over rocky unstable terrain and at times when we got a little off track we were actually sinking into the molten lava. All you have to do is put a good sock on with this shoe and you are protected. I had one shoe for every activity. I should never have taken them off because when I did I ended up leaving them at the Volcanoes National park when I changed into my $10 flip flops. They are worth the money for sure and when I save up I WILL buy another pair.
I bought the Tech Amphibian shoe because it was lightweight, easy to pack on my motorcycle trip, and yet provided enough support to hike to the top of Angel's Landing in Zion National Park and beyond.
These shoes are awesome. I use them as approach shoes. The dew from early morning hikes dries quick and the same goes for the sweat. They are so quick and easy to put on after a long climb and they are comfortable with lots of room for thin socks or thick socks.
I broke these shoes in by wearing them immediately and hiking through rain forest, streams, ocean and over rocks in Maui. They were great. 4 straight days of wet and dry use. By the fourth day, my feet were ready for no shoes, but you can't blame them. These shoes were rock steady plus they look good!
I ordered these for my wife in anticipation for hiking the 13 mile trek through the narrows in Zion National Park. Half the journey was in 2 - 4 feet of water. The amphibians did well, and so did her feet! No problems. Her one piece of criticism is focused on the heel/rear shoe fastener. She complained that it lossened up to easily and often, making stops for re-tightening several times. Otherwise...Awesome shoes.
I bought these shoes last minute for my trip to the Galapagos. They were a life saver since I had decided to leave my hiking shoes behind. They never failed me - even through lava rocks. Sand bothered me a little but otherwise a great buy.
I absolutely love these shoes. I've been looking for a shoe that would work for paddling and these are them. They were a great price and I couldn't pass them up. They do run about a size too big, but they have many adjustment options. I love that I can slip them on without having to worry about the heel.. I highly recommend these shoes!
I took my new amphibs for a week long canoe/camping trip in Quetico Provincial Park and I loved them! They are lightweight and dry quickly, but theyre sturdy enough for long rugged portages. There was a lot less water in my part of the canoe than my companions. I would definitely recommend these shoes. The slip on feature is great for walking around camp.
The tech amphibians are great. They're really lightweight and comfortable. They're quick and easy to get on, but won't come off when you're in the water. Now my boyfriend wants a pair too.
I CANNOT STRESS HOW MUCH I LOVE THESE SHOES. These are the second pair I've bought, not because the other ones wore out, but because I'm a girl and I like to match. I wore these shoes for three weeks straight in Costa Rica and they were perfect! All the hikes we went on always ended up in water at some point and while everyone was hoping from rock to rock trying to keep their shoes dry (unsuccessfully) I was in the water helping them across. They are great hiking shoes because there are no open gaps like the Keen brand so your feet are protected from debris in the trail. The only thing is that when you're walking through a river, sometimes the tiniest rocks get thru the small holes, but then they just go straight to the bottom of the shoe because there are little holes in the cover on the sole. Also, if you are just around the camp site and don't feel like putting your shoe all the way on, the heel folds down easily so you can just slip them on. Highly Recommended!!!
I love these shoes! I just bought a second pair. They are great for kayaking - the water drains right off and my feet don't feel soggy. The rugged soles are perfect for rocky portages, and they are so light I barely remember I'm wearing them.
A good friend recently replaced a pair of her tech amphibians. When I saw her new pair, I was reminded of how much I liked the style and design. I ordered my own pair that day and haven't taken them off since they were delivered! They are so comfortable and can be worn for hard core outdoor activities or for running errands around town. Either way I am feeling and looking good!
This is the only pair of sneaker-type footwear I have ever worn that are comfortable without socks. I can wear them around all day, then hop on my bike and (they fit great in the toe cages) go for a long ride with no blisters. I have not worn them in the water but have sweated in them plenty and they are very breathable. I have not taken advantage of the "slip-on" feature, it doesn't seem too comfortable. Not to mention, these are so cute I can't wait to buy another pair in a different color.
I am really happy with these shoes! I bought them because I work at a kid's summer camp that requires that we have closed-toe shoes. I wanted something that would last, be comfortable, be versatile and look greatthis shoe does it all! I recommend it. I am always happy with this brand, no matter what sport I am using it for. These are great!
These are great shoes. Comfortable, stable, airy, quick drying, cute. Great to be able to mash down the heels for a quick trip outside the tent. Good on the trail (pretty easy trail but w/ 25lb kid on my back). I want to buy a second pair for when the first pair wears out. Note: For the first few days the tongue of the shoes dug into my ankles. Luckily, they loosened up and now are fine.
I should have ordered a 1/2 size down, but oh well. Great show all around. the only problem I have with it - the lases get a bit lose and have to be tightened every half an hour if you're constantly walking.
I love these shoes, especially for the price I got them. They have been worn in the river and to the lake. Extremely handy in the state of Michigan. The water ran right out of them, the sand hung around, but as soon as they dried the sand came right out. Extremely comfortable. I usually wear a 7.5 I ordered a 7 and they fit perfect without any socks. Thanks for the excellent price and the fun gear. Dana
I got these shoes thinking that they would come in handy for my trip to Zion through the narrows. These were fantastic! They protected my feet while giving great traction through the water and bed of rocks. They were very nicely cushioned and dried out quickly. I would get another pair in the future!
For those debating whether to get shoes or sandals on those treks where you might get wet, I definitely suggest you get these. Even during a rain storm, the traction on these shoes was great. Water may get in, but it also doesn't stay in very long due to the mesh. It is also casual enough as regular shoes for street use. These are wide in the toe area. Best pair of hiking/water sports shoes I've had so far.
I wore these walking and hiking in the rain forest; crossed rivers, climbed rocky and muddy ledges and they were awesome. I want another pair in another color and bit smaller. Someone said they run a size too big and it's true. I normally wear and 8 and I bought an 8. Next time I will buy a half or full size smaller.
I wore them with SmartWool socks trekking around southern Italy, climbing volcanoes, walking for miles, and in Greece as well. They never gave me a problem and were very comfortable!
I was planning on going on a camping trip and thought these shoes might be nice (the fact they were on sale made them more appealing). I've only worn these water shoes once since I've bought them. I used them kayaking and had fun dunking them in the water. They're pretty nice and people told me that they were cool looking. They drain pretty well. The only thing is they're not super comfortable (not bad though) and one of the shoes made a very faint squishing sound for a while when I was walking. Not sure if that's a normal thing. But overall, they're nice shoes and they do the job.
I do water aerobics in an indoor pool four days a week and I was in need of a new pair of shoes for class. I have been buying a shoe designed for water aerobics made by Ryka, but one day they finally gave out! (Chlorine is brutal on your shoes.) I was desperate for a new pair, found some in a store in town, (on my lunch break from work) paid $75 for them, more than the Rykas by about $20 but thought they would be worth it. They felt so good when I tried them on. But when I got home that night I decided to shop for them online, (I can usually find things cheaper there.) I did! I found your site! And best of all, you saved me $30! The shoes have been awesome for classes. In 2 of these classes we do a lot of running in the water and these are perfect! When I need a new pair I will be back. Not to mention, although I will, I have passed the name of your site on to at least four people in class. Thanks for being here!
Since purchasing these shoes, I no longer experience joint pain in my feet during or after water aerobics. I would highly recommend them to anyone who exercises regularly in the water. They not only protect your feet from debris lurking on the pool bottom, they provide support and cushion to each step.
Pebbles and mud can get into this shoe too easily. It was also a pain to get them out of the shoe while you are hiking. I would only recommend this shoe if you do not want to travel with both Tevas (sandals) and a pair of sturdy hiking shoes. This shoe cannot replace Tevas nor hiking shoes on its own.
I received my techamphibian sandals last month, as a birthday present to myself. I have to say that I have worn them almost every day! I am walking in them, working in them and shopping in them, not to mention hitting the beach and playing disc golf. They go from a semi-rugged, cool walking shoe to a casual slip on for the market. I couldn't be happier with my choice or their performance so far, and I have gotten rave comments from friends on their appearance and funkiness. I hope they never give out on me, ever! Thanks for your quality selection and speedy delivery! Off to the lake for a walk!
I bought these shoes for a river trip back in August and they have ended up being my favorite pair of shoes. I wear them all of the time! They worked great at the river, so they served their initial purpose, but I love them so much, I have purchased a second pair to have on hand when the first pair wears out. I highly recommend these shoes for anyone who enjoys the outdoors and wants a versitile, comfortable shoe with excellent traction.
We just came back from 13 days in Belize and wore these shoes while hiking thru the jungle, crossing rivers, climbing thru caves, walking around town in different wet and dry conditions, and these shoes held up in all those conditions, dried quickly, felt light, and provided a lot of ventilation. Would definitely recommend them.
i just got my first pair and took them to their limits right away. i wore them backpacking in a rocky river canyon in utah. we were literally hiking in the river all day. there was not too much support or cushion so not the best shoe for hiking with a heavy pack on but i kind of expected that. i spend a lot of time on the river in the summers and plan on this being my go to rafting footwear option. i think they will perform excellently when not taken out of their recommended range of use.
Overall I am very pleased with the Salomon Tech Sandals. I usually wear a women's size 9 or 9.5, but since others recommended to downsize I did too. I ordered a 8.5 and fits perfect even with socks! So do size down... So far I have just been breaking the sandals in and haven't had any problems - happy with the purchase :)
Ran around in these in Maui for hikes. Perfect for hikes down to the ocean & back. Super comfy and cute. I showed my friends the pair I got and they were all supremely jealous ;)
Purchased to wear in the gym. Though labeled trail runner/water shoe, I thought they might be comfy and cool as a workout shoe. Normaly I wear the basic leather crosstrainer type shoe but, my feet get hot. Theses shoes have turned out just as I'd hoped. They're very comfy, greaT support, with the webbed net fabric it keeps my feet very cool. I LOVE THEM!!!!! Only issue is Salomons run a tad wide, a good thick breathable sock picks up the slack.
These shoes are fantastic. I needed a shoe that would allow me to go on land hikes, creek hikes, and other outdoor activities, both dry and wet, as a camp counselor. They're perfect for slippery banks and rocky terrain. They dry pretty fast and keep your feet cool in the hot weather. If you're looking for a comfortable, mutli-purpose shoe you couldn't pick a better one!
I absolutely love these shoes. I am actually going on to my third pair as well. I am a supervisor at a water park, where we walk on the average 12 miles a day, in and out of water. Many of my team mates have tried other brands, but all return back to these. Also, they have NEVER caused a blister!
This is my second pair, I bought my first pair at Kathmandu in Australia. Love them, I could wear them all day without aching feet or legs. Every other sports shoe were either too hot, or I suffered with aching legs and feet. I wear my new pair as golf shoes. Please dont discontinue them , LOVE THEM
We live in Michigan - great water statebut so much more to do. These shoes have been perfect EVERYTHING! I never took these shoes off for 48 hoursfrom the car, to kayak, to bike, to play hockey, to walk, then fell asleep in them!!! Perfect
These will be my main summer shoe for this year. Cottages & lots of time in the water in Canada. They seem to have one tight spot around the pinky toe at this point. That's my only real 'complaint'. These are a nice alternative to my Keen sandals as they are more running shoe than sandal & therefore offer a bit more protection from the elements. So far no complaints!
I love wearing these shoes when hiking, cliff jumping, and camping. They are quick to put on and comfortable. Easy to clean! I sometimes keep them around in the winter to exchange for my boots when I get to the building for the day.
Downside is they are horrible in sand or small pebbles.
I bought them for a caving trip that involved being fully immersed in water and then some scrambling and hiking around slick rocks. The dry time and the grip were great. despite being sopping wet - - they never got heavy and they really held their ground. My husband got the mens version and had similar raves. Great purchase!
The Salomon shoes are my second pair...my first were a gift and I loved them so much that I bought my self another pair. What makes them "cool" is the open mesh construction. Why is that good? Your feet don't swelter all day in them. I never wore sneakers until I got these shoes because my feet get too hot. These shoes are not just for summer because buildings are over heated in the winter and your feet get hot then, too.
They are too cool to wear under 35-40 degrees. I wore warmer shoes and I left my Salomons at work to chnage into when I got there.
The last great thing about these shoes is that they fit my orthodic inserts. I bought the shoes a half a size too big and the orthodics fit perfectly in them.
I have the men's version and I kinda liked them but during every day use on holidays at the beach, walk around city etc. the heel strap is not helpful. The strap actually gets loose quite fast so I wouldn't recommend usage as a closed sandal. I used mine then with a fold over heel flap - just what they're designed for. After 3 months usage (4 weeks everyday) the mesh at the heel flip was already torn. It's still fine as a sandal but I can't even imagine go hiking in this shoes like one of the previous reviewers.
These shoes were amazing!! I did the zip line tour while on a cruise, best thing i purchased for the trip. Very comfortable and did their job on the wet rocky climbs. Shoe size is one smaller and no need to strap to tight, after the track I was able to convert them to a slide to give my toes a rest!
I ordered these shoes at the last minute for a trip to Hawaii and they were great. They were so comfortable I didn't even need to break them in. Wore them walking, hiking on the volcano and on the beach. They were great everywhere. Would definitely buy these again!
They are very comfy, really good grip on the sole for walking. Sand and dirt do come in them but that happens with normal shoes. They do run half a size big I would say and they are quite wide. Since I had them five of my friends have said they are going to get some, everyone seems to like the way they look. Also, go for the free shipping, it says 10 to 14 days but mine arrived in 48 hours.
I love the collapsible heel so I can slip into them quickly. They dry fast, however, I find them more comfortable with socks for an all day wear which defeats the quick-dry feature. The removable lining is great. I am constantly tucking in the laces when the fall out of the pocket which is annoying and the traction isn't what I was hoping for but overall they are a huge improvement from what I was wearing. I would purchase another pair of these shoes in the future.
I recently bought these shoes for kayaking, and they work wonderfully. They're very comfortable, stay on well, and dry out extremely fast. I work at a canoe rental, and wore them to work many times. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a rugged water shoe.
The best sneakers I ever had. Used that model for 3 years and bought the new pair of the same color. Now I have two pairs, one for outside, one for inside trainings.
I found this shoe originally about 2 years ago. My dog got to them and needed a new pair. I absolutely love this shoe and bought another pair for my niece who also loves it. I used to be a runner but can no longer run for various reasons. I walk in this shoes for miles and my feet never felt so great!!!!!!!
