Salomon's Super X Mid XCR is the ultimate shoe for moving quickly through rugged terrain. Alpine adventure racers, pay attention! The mid-cut Super X gives you more ankle protection than your average trail running shoe. It's lighter and faster than hiking boots in rugged, rocky terrain, but offers Gore-Tex moisture resistance and a protective toe cap. The lace pocket will keep those guys contained, so you've got no chance of tripping. On the laces, anyway. A power strap above the ankle lends extra support and improves fit. The Running Contagrip gives you superior traction when you're booking through that final 100 yards of scree.
Bottom Line: Run fast, take chances. But keep yourself safe in the Super X.
The shoes were comfortable the first time I wore them. I bought them for snowshoeing and walking in winter weather here in Alaska. They are so much lighter than my hiking boots and have better traction on ice. I have worn them for a hike in the rain in Ketchikan, and my feet stayed dry. The lacing system is easy.
I have blister problems with high top hikers, so I thought this might work for me. I did get blisters, but not till long after I normally would! Its a very lightweight, good-looking shoe. Definitely order 1/2 size down as with all Salomon shoes.
I used this shoe for a 9 day trip (28lb pack including clothes), 5 days were XC and no blisters which is amazing for my feet. Super lightweight but provided some ankle support. The Gore-Tex XCR seemed to provide the necessary waterproofness through 4 days of rain. The granite did chew up the midsole a bit, but I would have expected that with such a lightweight shoe.
I own a pair of these shoes and I absolutely love 'em, so much so that I bought a pair for a female friend for her birthday. She has also fallen in love with 'em.
The sneakers are awesome as with any Salomon shoe. Great fit and comfort and no break in time required. The quick lacing system is nice and the extra ankle pull strap adds support on more technical terrain. I have been using the shoes for snowshoeing and backcountry mountaineering in snowy and wet conditions. The traction is fantastic. The only downer on them is that the flap to hide the lacing pull in is a bit iffy in keeping the lace inside properly, so you have to be careful if using the shoes with crampons that the lacing doesnt get snagged. These would be great for adventure racing in off canter wet/snowy terrain or a situation where you wanted a comfortable fast sneaker with added ankle support.
This is my second pair of these boots. They are superior to anything I have previously worn. We hiked portions of the Appalachian Trail this summer and feet were never an issue with these boots on. They are light, cool, easily laced and look great. They are the type you want six pairs of so that you will always be content with your footwear.
