Salomon SpeedCross 2 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Built for speed, the Salomon Men's SpeedCross 2 Trail Running Shoe is ready for adventure racing mayhem. Salomon stripped down the already light trail running shoes by using a mesh upper to trim the SpeedCross 2's weight to a lean, race-ready 11 ounces. However, that doesn't mean that Salomon did away with cushioning or stability. Salomon's Cushioning System puts cushioning material in the heel to reduce heel strike impact, high-density foam in the arch to control pronation, and elastic material in the forefoot for a dynamic push-off. With Salomon's Sensifit lacing system, obtaining a precision fit is easy. Just slip your foot in and pull the Quickfit drawcord; the shoe automatically wraps around your arch and forefoot. An open-cell Ortholite liner further increases breathability, and it's treated with an anti-odor finish so you're teammates don't gag when you take your shoe off at the end of the race. A super aggressive winter Contragrip outsole won't become rigid in cold conditions, so you can run all night to the next check point if you have to.

Bottom Line: Slip on the SpeedCross 2 Trail Running Shoe and start the race.

Feather light

By:

These are the best shoes I have ever owned! they fit like a glove & are super light. When the soles wear out, I won't bother looking for a more recent model! When I go camping these are the first item ticked off the gear list. Salomon have found a real winner with this shoe.

Super Fast...

By:
November 29, 2008

I love my SC2's...they're light, fast and have some "sick" traction... I immediately replaced the insoles with SuperFeet insoles (as I always do) and have been logging some of my fastest Laps/Splits to date... The SC2 is very light and still has stability where it's needed (for me at least). I have an 8K trail run tomorrow that I'm looking forward to (like a kid on Christmas morning)!!! I highly recommend this trail runner from Salomon...

By:
November 26, 2008

This is my 3rd pair of Salomons and I was not disappointed. I have run 2x50k trail runs & put over 400 miles in them and they are still holding up...Traction is excellent on these.

Is this shoe water resistant? I want to go with something other than gore-tex for the heat factor. But need something water resistant enough to keep out heavy dew. I am thinking of this or the La Sportiva. Any comments on the water resistant would be appreciated. How does the fit of the Cross compare to the ultra pro 3d?

Just what they say they are

By:
July 5, 2009

I've used these shoes now for just over a year.
Solid performance; they are just as advertised - nothing more, nothing less. They are in no way waterproof, but on the same token they breathe exceptionally well (and dry quick), and you don't even know they are on your feet. I have used them extensively in the cold (-15F and up) and with a moderate sock they keep feet warm, and have exceptional traction on snowpack. They do seemingly let in (very fine) debris while running in sand and dust, but that is just part of the game.
I like them so much I use them now for an everyday shoe as well, and they DO wear out. I had a similar experience as someone above, as the mesh over the toe begins to deteriorate with time, and it didn't take much impact from a stick to rip it open - but that is just the cost of an ultralight shoe.

I love them and will be purchasing my third pair.

On a sidenote - I had terrible luck with the ortholite insoles (my feet literally hurt after any extended use) but superfeet naturally solved the problem.

Great mt biking shoe

By:
May 27, 2009

This shoe has all the promising features of a good Salomon trail shoe; traction, light, comfy, style, etc. I use these for clipless mt biking and these are unmatched -- an insane amount of grip when needed. Though if you do decide to use these for riding, please consider tucking the laces in as even Kevlar can shred under the right circumstance. I wouldn't say these are geared entirely for cold weather because of the mesh on top of the foot is not water proof in the least bit -- which can result in a cold foot after walking through some snow.

Yes they do fit true to size. However Salomons are known for having a little wider toe box than other brands.

By:

These shoes are really light and the traction is top notch. Sizing is true to size. They fit a little tight but they feel like you have nothing on your feet. I use them for running through the woods in the snow. They look great too.

Mixed feelings about this shoe

By:
June 18, 2009

I bought the shoe based solely on the Gear of the Year review. I use it extensively 25K/wk trail runs in the Pacific Northwest.
-shoe is exceptionally light
-lug style sole offers good footing, though as previously stated, road work causes quick detioration.
- This NOT a shoe for the stability challenged.
- Narrow toebox with an awkward constriction at the end of the stride
-solomon lace system is just downright great ...some hate it I know.
-Water is NOT your friend with these
-exterior wears really well...better than the sole!

-low cut ankle, aside from little stability control, is a easy-in for dirt and debris. Running on true trails (not just chips) turns the inside of the shoe into a petri dish of found creatures and plants.

Insane Comfort

By:
February 16, 2009

I havent had a chance to test these out on the trails, but I wore them to work today to break them in, and they are super comfortable and light. Its easy to forget you have shoes on. They are nice and snug, almost like neopreen dive boots. They also kept my feet warm in temperatures where I would normally wear boots.

Great in the sand and woods!

By:
December 10, 2008

I recently ran my first race in the SC2s through some sand and trails along Florida's gulf coast. The SC2 kept me paddling through the soft sand and was also great in the wet wood trail we ran on. This is my second pair of Salomon trail runners, the first is still going strong as my daily drivers now. The lacing system is great...I wish I had it for all my kids shoes!

This shoe is more suited for colder weather applications. Around the 50F mark tread wear will pick up significantly. In the Salomon line I'd recommend the Comp 3 GTX or the XA Pro 3D Ultra Trail or GTX version. There are also some lighter race trail shoes but I do not have experience with them.

Salomon Speedcross 2

By:
May 9, 2009

Amazed I am!! I slipped these babies on and didnt know I had them on...then went out and did 10miles of trail running and was amazed at how good they felt. The hold around the arch and forefoot was incredible even after plowing through a couple of streams and getting them saturated they still held the foot well and drained quickly. Then there is the grip factor....wow they grip what ever they land on...rocks mud gravel they take it in their stride. Then ya can't leave out the cushioning which I found to be excellent. I can't seem to fault these babies and can see myself getting another pair when these wear out.

Honeymoons over

By:
September 22, 2008

Ok, I had these for exactly to the day one year. Been a Salomon customer for many moons. No major issues.Speedcross was comfortable and solid, light in the cushioning department-unmatched in the traction department. Coming back from an out and back run I snagged a toe and the shoe literly riped in half accross the toe box. NEVER seen that before in any shoe despite the age and use I got out of these. Not happy with the total lack on customer support at Salomon; imposible to talk/email/comment. A friendly warning to all true trail runners, keep an eye on that seam along the toe box; not cool and I expected more out a a shoe this expensive and have switched brands.
