Salomon Pro Trek 5 LTR GTX Boot - Men's - 2005

The Salomon Pro Trek 5 LTR GTX hiking boot is a super comfortable, lightweight boot constructed with split suede leather and a waterproof, breathable Gore-Tex liner. These boots were designed for all-weather hiking through the most rugged, mountainous terrain. The Pro Trek 5's Mountain Contagrip sole is constructed from durable, high wear, and abrasion-resistant rubber that provides excellent grip and durability on all types of rugged terrain. In addition, rubber randing acts as a durable bumper deflecting, rocks, branches, and other toe-stubbing nasties. If you seek added ankle protection, the Pro Trek 5 sports a high-cut profile for increased ankle support. Material bridges the tongue to the upper creating a protective gusset that prevents debris from getting in your boots. Locking lace cleats ensure a secure fit from start to finish.

Bottom Line: The comfort and leather and waterproof protection of Gore-Tex in an agile, grippy backcountry boot.

Unbeatable

By:
December 23, 2005

I like the feel of these boots a lot. Went hiking in Squamish out of the box, and they were very supportive. Have a nice shank that doesn't give in even after break in. Really good in the slush and snow and light. Haven't tried for multi-day backpacking with a 40lb+ pack, but these are very satisfying and fast boots.

Good boots!

By:
November 28, 2005

After reading previous reviews I expected that they didn't need any break in. On the first trip that I took them for they started hurting after only a couple of hundred meters. However, after wearing them for a whole day, it didn't hurt so much anymore. So they do need a bit of break in. I found it a bit uncomfortable around the ankle walking downhill in the beginning. I also think the shoes need more support around the middle of the foot. They support very well around the ankle, but that's about it. On the bright side they have lots of room for my toes, they are very lightweight, waterproof and they keep me warm and dry in winter, even when I'm not wearing thick socks in them.

Great Hiking Boots

By:
September 2, 2004

They do need some break in. Unlike another review of these boots I would not recommend taking an extended hike in them on the day they arrive from UPS. They take some break in but not much. A few days wearing them in around the house and doing some yard work does it. They are light weight and cool to wear. Enjoy.

Solid, lightweight boot

By:
November 17, 2005

I use my hiking boots for everything, all day. Office, walking, cutting down trees, climbing scaffolding and yes, hiking too. So my boots usually last a year before they disintegrate. That will be the ultimate test. In the meantime here my first impressions:
+ Solid, reasonably stiff construction
+ Quality of materials and workmanship seems good
+ Good, gripping sole
+ it’s lightweight, but no sneaker
+ Reasonable price
+ Not as breathable as expected from a Gore-Tex lined shoe

Salomon GTX

By:
May 11, 2005

I recently purchased these for a 10 mile hike through medium terrain, mostly mild hills. After about 4 miles my feet were aching. I had blisters the size of half dollars on each foot on the flat area in back of my toes. The high-cut chafed my ankles and the area above them even though I wore mid-cut socks. The boots are also heavy and had me tripping over rocks and roots - this was very unfortunate since I had a 50lb pack on. One good thing was the boots sole went through the hike with hardly any wear. I would only recommend these boots for people who are very used to wearing boots. I would definitely recommend hiking shoes or trails runners for those who like a little more agile feel.

Salomon Pro Trek GTX

Light-weight, good heel to toe flex, and stiff across left to right axis. Boots appear to be well made. I wear Salomon ski boots and these have the same arch support design, rise and insole fit. They came out of the box and fit like second skin.

Alaska Tough Boot

By:
September 5, 2005

I purchased the ProTrek 5 (after an exhaustive search for the discontinued ProTrek 6) with some misgivings (I wanted a boot that went higher on the ankle). However, after three weeks in Alaska, from hiking the White River in the Wrangell Mountains to fishing the Solomon and Pilgrim Rivers on the Seward Peninsula, I can enthusiastically recommend these rugged lightweight boots. My feet were NEVER wet, NEVER cold, and the performance of the soles in shale and scree to glacial moraine was phenomenal. A one week non-hiking break-in period prior to excursions is recommended.

Salomon Boots

By:
November 7, 2005

I am very pleased with my new Salomon Pro Trek 5 LTR GTX Boots. At last my feet are dry again! They are comfortable, lightweight and offer good ankle support in rough terrain. Being a runner for over thirty years, I had my doubts when ordering, but their light weight and comfort have exceeded my expectations. Thanks.

Salomon hiking boots

By:
May 3, 2004

I am very pleased with these boots. I put them on and started hiking up and down a 700 foot hill behind the house 3 or 4 times in the first week. The hill is very steep and the boots were extremely comfortable right out of the box. Plenty of room in the toe box for coming down the hill, did not experience any jammed toes!

They are light and appear to be holding up well, though I only have about 15 trips up and down that hill on them.

I am excited about using these for my backpacking trips this summer. I love having comfortable boots!

Happy Ass Feet...

By:
December 20, 2004

Owning a landscape design company will put the best of boots to the test. The Salomon 5's definately live up to their hype! They're very light yet rigid at the same time. Although their "chassis" was a bit awkward at first (of all the high priced boots I've bought in the past - none had a sturdy "chassis" built in) I soon realized that Saloman has their head screwed on straight when it comes to boot design.
I've spent many weeks now wearing the Salomon 5 in the field and I still enjoy strapping these babies on my feet come morning time!
