The Suunto Observer Titanium Watch has the tools you need to survive the toughest athletic challenges. Yet its slim, timeless design makes it wearable in casual situations. The Suunto Observer's main features are altimeter, barometer, digital compass, and chronometer. All of these powerful tools are packed into a lightweight titanium frame that is 30% smaller than previous wristop computers. You can spend your weekend racking up vertical feet and brag about it on Suuntosports.com while you're at work and no one will be the wiser. Sneaky, huh?
Bottom Line: The Suunto Observer Titanium Watch is the ultimate watch for outdoors people with discerning taste.
I've had a Titanium Observer for three years. I have not had a problem and logged over 300,000 Ascent and Descent vertical feet in skiing and hiking. I recommend using the Suunto battery kit when changing the battery to protect water resistance. I'm curious if buttons were pushed under water, as this should not be done on any watch unless it's a 660 ft rated water resistant watch like most dive watches are.
I also had this watch (the Titanium Observer) for almost 3 years. This is not a watch for the faint of heart. It has a lot of functions and purposes on why and how it works. It took me 3 months to completely figure this watch out (from understanding the altimeter vs. barometer to different calibrations and to different websites). I have used the history log on hiking trips going approximately 1000 feet both ways. The barometer is quite useful especially for weather forecast. As for the compass, be sure to calibrate it before the hike. Fortunately, my glass is perfectly unscratched... I rammed it through wooden doorposts many times and it seemed that the doorposts might have taken some damage but not the glass because the glass is indented in the casing. I have a friend who bought an Altimax because the glass was not indented it was all scratched up; it looked pretty bad. With the waterproof issue, I have to agree with some that you are not supposed to depress the button under water. Or some just have better luck than others. So far I had to change the battery and band once; I might have to do that again soon. Its a $500 watch dont be too careless. Even though it has titanium case doesn't mean it is indestructable. The Titanium Observer is a multi purpose watch with a sleek and professional look. I am very happy with the watch.
After 3 weeks of wearing, the watch developed condensation under the crystal. The alarm and backlight failed to function properly as well. Very disappointing for a $500 watch!
This watch is difficult to use. The glass face scratches easily but worst of all it is not waterproof. I swam in a pool and it filled with water. Suunto say that it is water resistant but when you call them to complain they say that swimming is not covered, can you imagine a situation where you might be 100m deep in water without swimming? They have refused to fix my watch under warranty even though I have only had it for 10 months.
Have only had this watch for four weeks and am returning it. The alarm is inaudible and the other features don't work as expected. For example, the temperature is not accurate unless the watch is off your wrist for 15 minutes. The altimeter and climbing features bounce all over the place as you walk. I like the weight, size and looks of the unit but it does not function as expected.
It is classy with many features that are helpful and accurate in most cases. I wish the face was bigger and easier to read. The alarms work, but are so soft, so count on missing breakfast. Good weight, the straps are well built. It has a strong light; its plenty bright and has good staying power. The manual needs some work, particularly for us old folks with fading eyes.
I love this watch. It is good looking and light for it's size (I dont really notice it compared to other large watches that I have owned. I have put the face though some rough treatment and it only has 1 small scratch, where my citizen watch has numerous scratches from the same kind of abuse. I have (by mistake) hit the button underwater and nothing bad happened, but I would not try it on purpose, I have also gone diving with this watch 4 times and it performed fine (none of the dives were over 70 feet). My only complaint is that it is a little complicated to use, but once you have it down it is not a problem to use.
