Sierra Designs Sirius Tent 2-Person 3-Season - 2006
The Sierra Designs Sirius Tent is a good value for backpackers seeking a simple, lightweight 2-person, 3-season tent. This basic lightweight tent appeals to almost every backpacker. Swift Clips make pitching fast and easy—it sets up in a flash, even the first time. There are two doors, one for each of you. And Sierra Designs' was even generous enough to provide two vestibules – 4sq ft of extra storage space for each of you. Wondering how a tent can include all these features yet still be lightweight? Sierra Designs employs a unique half single-wall, half double-wall design. The single wall half of this tent (top and left side) is mesh. The detachable fly only covers the mesh half of the tent and provides adequate protection in nasty weather.
Bottom Line: An ideal all-around, introductory backpacking tent.
Good Day, I Set this tent up indoors just to check it out. Warning, Im no pro, and this is a quick, living-room-test, first impression: Tent is packaged in a blue bag, with a mostly text instruction booklet. Weight in the bag as delivered= 4lb.,10oz. Weight of everything minus the baggage= 4lb.,6 oz. Poles only= 1 lb. stakes only= 3.5oz. Packs down to about 20x5.5 The poles are about 19.5 long. Nice light DAC poles -at 19.5though, still hard to cram into a pack or pannier. First impression is that the material looks substantial, in dark blue with light blue fly, reminiscent of my old Clip Flashlight. Inexplicably, the nylon loops on the fly came folded up and sealed in a small plastic bag, with a shiny gold twist-tie neatly wrapped (not twisted) around the hem to secure them. Bling Bags? Setup is super-fast. I only looked at the instructions just to make sure I was not missing something. This is questionable as a two person tent. Maybe if the two of you are married. Not if youre having a spat. Okay, bad analogy At six feet tall with a broad build, my head and feet both brushed against the inward sloped walls of the tent. This is not unusual in comparable tents I have tried. I dont like it, and I worry that in the single-wall section of the tent, wicking could occur. The seamless bathtub floor is confidence-inspiring. The tent stands nicely without stakes, but near the doors the fly does need to be staked to insure ventilation. Visibility is good, with about half the tent in mesh. Less than half of the view, sky and environs, is blocked. The fly went on easy and fast. An innovative design with the half fly. Would be questionable in a wind driven sideways rain you would have to be watchful when pitching the tent, which direction you point into the wind. The directions allude to the same precaution for achieving the required ventilation. The vestibules are a joke- the bottom of the fly is high off the ground and the area is small. If you put your boots there they would get filled in all but the lamest vertical drizzle. Luckily the tent is wider than most, so you could bring your gear inside Instructions recommend use of seam-seal, but I could not locate a seal that did not already have broad seam tape on it(?) The instructions also recommend use of a ground cloth or footprint to protect the tent. Why not include it then? $$? So, I cant believe the quality for the price-point. For just slightly more weight than the Clip Flashlight you have a freestander. Youre on your own testing it in a windstorm. Hope that helps. Be Well, Art
Bought this tent due to its relatively low cost and light weight. Was looking for a tent that was free standing also. (I like being able to pick a tent up in the morning, turn it upside down, and shake it out prior to packing it up.) I really like this tent! Very quick to set up. The fly clips are color coded and snap on quickly. I really like being in the tent and being able to see outside (without having to mess with windows) and yet still be fully protected from the rain. If you wish, with the fly in place you can roll up the back side so you have a great view of the sky. The side panels of the fly can really pull the air into the tent if you face them into the wind. All-in-all, Im very pleased and would highly recommend this tent.
This tent was quite helpful during a trip to the sawtooth mountains in Stanley, Idaho. The only down side to this tent is that it always needs to be pointed into the wind otherwise you run the risk of having rain go directly into your tent through the gap between the tent and the fly or having it bounce back in through the mesh where the fly is suppose to cover. Otherwise a graet tent to go camping in.
Nice tent. Very nice price! Stood up to about 8 hours of heavy wind and rain this weekend with not a drop inside the tent. (Can't say the same about my buddy's Wal-Mart tent!!) He was miserable. The one and ONLY thing I didn't like about this tent was the flaps over the zippers. they offer good protection, but will get hung up every time if you don't pay attention. VERY minor nuisance hardly worth mentioning. HIGHLY recommended for your first serious tent.
We used the tent for the first time last weekend on a 20 mile trip. The tent was everything thats advertised. The design is very economic, and the setup is so simple. We did get some rain and the tent kept us bone dry. Overall this was a good buy.
Overall, there isn't much to complain about this tent but the things that are wrong with it are kinda biggies. First off, the design is inherently flawed for 2 out of your 3 seasons you are supposed to enjoy it with. that is to say the rain fly which fans out a couple feet on either side only provide protection in the rain if it is pointed the right direction or none at all of the winds are shifting. Secondly, this tent is small. I'm 5ft 10in and my head and feet were pressed against the walls of the tent. I also don't recommend rooming 2 people in this tent unless you both want to get intimate. Other then those 2 major things, this is like all other Sierra Design tents well built with solid material and a breeze to set up. So if you're a short summer camper, this is the tent for you
Easy set up, which is nice at the end of a long hike. Lots of floor space that can hold two people and a cat comfortably, definitely recommended for two hikers. Loved the summer time star gazing. The double entry is a wonderful feature for those late night restroom breaks. This tent is a great value.
