The K-9 Float Coat brings your four-legged friend further into the field with you by offering safe and protective play in whitewater, lakes and streams. The 1680-denier ballistic nylon provides amazing strength to weight ratio so when it's time to haul your dog out of the water you won't tear the coat or feel the extra weight. The high luminescence reflective trim on the sides as well as the top of the coat offers more visibility in low light settings, and the vest's dual color panels in cool hues contrast against neutral backgrounds making sure your pup stands out. The coat also features Rock Lockster® side release buckles, hidden D-ring attachment point, a low profile assistance handle, variable thickness buoyancy cells, a generous ergonomic cut, and proven fit and functionality. The size coat you'll need depends on your dog's length (the measurement from base of neck to base of tail) and girth (measurement around widest part of rib cage.)
Bottom Line: High performance flotation for your backcountry barker.
we've had these for several years and they hold up great, are comfortable for the dogs, and are easy to put on. Our dogs swim in salt water and romp through marshes full of briars and such and these coats can definitely take the abuse! Thanks Ruffwear for a great product and thanks to this website for a great price.
What's the difference between the ruffwear k9 floatcoat and the 74.99 eddy jacket? my dog is a 96 lb. sheperd and can swim but we want to be extra safe but want the best jacket for him.
I was wondering the same thing. According to the Ruffwear website, the Portage jacket is: Great for calm water activities, or for dogs who are less buoyant and/or new to the water. Intended Uses: Canoeing Recreational Paddling Lake Swimming Sailing
The Big Eddy one is: Ideal for active canines who frequent the water, it is designed for aggressive swimmers in rough or fast-moving water, day or night. Intended Uses: Kayaking Rafting Boating Surfing Paddle Boarding

Hope that helps! I think the Portage Float Coat is perfect for what our lab will be doing.
Using the size small for my shih-tzu's (around 9 pounds each). The flotation is so high on their backs that you have to adjust the collar piece a bit or they struggle to keep their heads out of the water (the back floats so high that it pushes the noses down a bit). The best dog PFD that i've found so far, despite the little fit issues. Trying them out on some river trips this summer - we'll see how they do!
You would likely be best served by the medium, which fits a girth of 27in - 32in (measured on the widest part of the ribs). Make sure it's snug and enjoy :)
Our 75lbs GSD is wearing the Large size in this pic. She loved it. It looks a little big in the picture now but it fit her well and offered her good freedom of movement.
I read a review that said it was comfortable, frankly it was too small for me to get in it so I can't say if it's comfortable but my dog hasn't griped about wearing it. It gives me confidence with a dog that loves the water.
I've been shopping around for pfd's for my dogs and ended up buying these. They are the best! Great fit, seems comfortable and quality materials. I have two border collies, one wears a size "S" the other is a "M".
My dog is 32lb Catahoula Leopard dog, 21 inches long and 25 inches girth what size should I get? (He is learning to surf). he is only a year old and I do expect him to grow a little bit(hopefully).
We bought this for my 95lb German Shorthair and the fit is excellent, there's enough room for adjustment for say a 110 lb. dog. The coat is easy on and easy off too in case you are in a hurry and the boat is sinking, ha ha. We bought is just in case our 24 foot Striper sinks, we would have enough time to snap on the jacket incase we were far from shore fishing. Our dog can swim just fine, but an undercurrent or a super long swim to shore could tire a dog out and mayble drown. Our dog is an equal member of our family and his protection is just as important to us as our son's protection. I reccomend this to anyone who is going to take their dog on a boat. The handle is great for lifting the dog into the boat from the dock. I imagine is is great for lifting the dog back into the boat if it were to jump out life my in-laws' dog constantly does and they struggle to get her in the boat again and again. I reccomended the jack to them and they bought one and love it.
I want to take my lab river floating with us, he is a water boy for sure, but will this be sufficient to fight current and fatigue? I will have a rope lead of course, but just a little paranoid.
It should be sufficient. We use this on our lab in pretty heavy currents during our floats. The important part is getting the right size, so the natural swimability is not hindered. Of course, I would not take your dog anywhere you are unfamiliar with the water--just as a precaution.
Hi there-I have a rescued 85 lb. Rottie and a 110 lb Swiss Mtn dog mix. Unfortunately, they both like the water but are both poor swimmers. The 85lb Rottie wears a large because I focused on her weight. I live on a lake and am a boater and I worried that if we ever capsized, the vest would help me to hold her up until help arrived. I would suggest the large size for your 73lb. Golden. Accidents happen and I am not sure if a 73lb dog could be fully supported by a medium vest. I think of a medium dog as a beagle. I am not sure if this helps you or not, I tend to err on the side of caution :)
I love the vest. It fits my lab perfectly and comfortably. The shipment was prompt. The vest is made extremely well. Thank you guys...see you again soon, for SURE!
Ours is not a retriever or lab who may get tired and need a little help getting to shore. OUrs is a 25 pound Boston Terrier who sinks to the bottem. Can not swim. Yet he loves the high dive at the lake and a quick kayak ride down a river. We've tried to teach him. I just don't think its going to happen. So...my question is, Will this jacket provide enough bouyancy to keep 25 pounds of dead weight afloat?
I don't know about "dead weight" but our 60 pound Golden gets a lot of flotation from it. I would think at the very least he would be able to stay afloat until you rescued him. Maybe it would give him the confidence to swim some.
I have two retrievers and this vest is by far the best I've ever gotten for them. It's made well, fits correctly, and stays in place. Too many K9 life jackets fall off once the dogs start moving. I'll never go back.
I have a 130 LB wolf hybrid, he really dig's the vest. The XL fit him great, he is a great athlete and the K-9 vest just makes him better. 5 F#%&@*! stars for this radical dog vest.
My dog is a 140 pound Leonberger. This vest is large enough for him and sturdy enough to keep his head above water. It is the highest quality vest we have seen and the ONLY one that fits him.
