what is the difference between cross cuntry skis and down hill skis?

Cross country skis are very light, very skinny, often don't have metal edges, and are so soft that they are absolutely terrifying to ski downhill on. Downhill skis (a very broad term ranging from alpine to tele, race boards to fat powder skis) are heavier, wider, stiffer, metal-edged, more incut, and designed to keep you in control going very fast.
