Redfeather Snowshoes Explore Series Snowshoe - 2008

Strap on the Redfeather Explore Series Snowshoe, and head out to enjoy a snowy winter day in the backcountry. Redfeather designed this snowshoe for more adventurous hikes or walks—on or off trail. The rounded tail provides stability so you can get where you want to go no matter how deep the snow. A Pivot Rod Hinge keeps the heel of the snowshoe on the ground and the tip up, so you can float over the white stuff instead of plunging in. The Control binding includes a quick-adjust nylon webbing strap and a flexible urethane heel strap that securely locks you in. The aggressive, stainless steel crampon bites hard on downhill descents.

Bottom Line: Discover the wonders of winter with the Redfeather Explore Series.

I have never snowshoed before and I am interested in starting. Do you wear hiking boots with the snowshoes? Or is there a specialty boot or snowboarding boots? Thanks

Whatever you want to hike in works. If you might encounter ice, you will want to carry crampons that fit your boots, also.

I would call Redfeather and ask. They may even fix it for free.

In my experience, the newer snowshoes don't provide enough

In my experience, the newer snowshoes don't provide enough flotation for backcountry use where I live. The only ones that have worked for me are the old stick and rawhide shoes with a huge surface area. Are there any modern products available that provide enough surface area to stay on top deep, dry powder snow in the north woods?

MSR has a snowshoe that allows you to add on flotation tails in various lengths. (denali Classic) Great Shoe!It seems 35 inches is as about as large as they come. But unless you are plus-sized, that should be pretty good.I totally agree! Its a conspiracy! I guess they want us to suffer and they want us to think that bright paint somehow makes us float! Anyway, I did just find out that gv snowshoes makes a 12x 42 called Wide Trail. This is very interesting to me, also. They are over $300., though, and am not sure how balanced they are. The picture shows a 28 inch snowshoe and the binding far forward which I don't like at all. They weigh 7.67 pounds also, which does sound a bit heavy. They do have a variety of sizes in the wide trail model. I love my 10x36 Tubbs, but would love to try a bigger snowshoe, as long as it had the advantages of the high tech binding and decking.

Hi Again, DOnt know if you received my question a few moments

Hi Again, DOnt know if you received my question a few moments ago because had trouble fiddling with password, etc, but I want some help please in deciding between this product, the Redfeather Snowshoe, and the "Tubbs Frontier Snowshoe-Womens". So can you please compare the two for me and advise. They'll be used for snow trekking with my Husky dogs. Thanks, Janie Worth

Both the RF Explore & Tubbs Frontier are considered recreational snowshoes. The Frontier is gender specific with a frame shape & bindings supposedly more accommodating for women. The Explore is unisex in design with a longer size available for carrying heavier loads. Both use similar quality components & materials. It is important that when selecting the proper size, you remember to add in your pack weight.
