Princeton Tec wouldn’t have called it the Apex Headlamp if it sucked. That’s good enough for most people, but since you’re a gear addict you’ll appreciate knowing that this little waterproof LED boasts up to 130 lumens of output and a 200-hundred hour burn time. Princeton Tec made this tough headlamp with four light levels and a safety flash mode, and incorporated a dual switch system to make it easier than ever to change modes. *Compatible with alkaline, lithium, and rechargeable batteries.
i got like 30 text messages about how stoked nathan was about this headlamp that he's convinced me that i need to buy one too! the difference from the lamp and allll others is RIDICULOUS! i've totally been sold. this is where it's at.
i just upgraded from the fuel to this because of the reviews on this page and i will put it this way, they're all right! freaking amazing! that's what it is! sooooo bright that the first time my brother-in-law saw it at night before we left on a trip that he went online and ordered one! THEN my mom who's not even into hiking went and got one too because she was so impressed! get a price-match and save yourself some dough but even at this price it's well worth it! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
The Apex Pro uses smaller CR123 Lithium batters whereas the Regular Apex uses 4 AA batteries. There are pros and cons to both. Apex Pro: Pros - Having a smaller battery pack (CR123 batteries are 3V vs. AA's which are 1.5V...this allows the Pro to put out just as much light using two significantly smaller batteries), cold weather performance due to the lithium batteries, carrying spares aren't a big deal, no need to use the center strap. Cons - Batteries wear out faster, only one battery option.
Apex: Pros - Longer battery output, multiple battery options (lithium, rechargeable, alkaline). Cons - Heavier battery Pack, carrying extra batteries can be heavy, bulkier, must use the included middle strap in order for it not to slip down on the head.
Both lights put out the exact same lumens (130 Lumens is incredibly bright)!
This is my primary light for pretty much everything. I did a week of vertical caving this year and this light stayed bright and reliable the entire time. I have done water passages and fully submerged with no problems. Not exactly lightweight... (if that is what you are looking for)
Although the battery pack is significanly larger, this puts out more light for a longer period of time than the "pro". Great product. I had a few issues with my first one. The headband and the articulation point for the light broke. I think it was a fluke, as I haven't any problems or additions troubles. I appreciate the overall construction: h20 seal on battery pack and simple mechanical fastener of the light articulation point. Essence: well built (att. to detail), great light output. (far best I've ever seen) Great customer service. Highly recommended. Get the pro if weight/size and battery duration is of great concern. Get the reg if looking for a longer lasting (batt power) bomber light. Downside: the buttons are a bit troubling with cold fingers or gloves. I have one of each=STOKED
I bought this lamp for my brother, because he does alot of hiking on the 14ers in Colorado and he tends to never time it right and ends up walking out in the dark.
the only problem i have with this light is that my eyes will never be the same again because every time i would say something to him he would turn around to talk to me and his light would shine in my eyes. THE THING IS LIKE A SPOT LIGHT!!!!! If you like the dark don't buy this light, if you like day light buy it because when this light is on even when its on low it makes the dark brighter than the brightest day!
Brightest. Headlamp. EVER. The different modes are awesome too- the 4 led's that surround the big one is a great idea when you don't need the floodlight.
I have had dozens of head lamps over the last four years working for the government in civil service, and they all sucked, petzl, pelican they prob all have their places (cooking around a campfire) but making the step and buying the Princeton Tec Apex out of my own pocket was a good move, I use it in a highly industrial environment, wearing it while grinding with it on submarines, to crawling the tanks and bowels of the subs and the worst environment I think can be thrown at it, pressure washing in tanks with 130 degree water, the Apex shows me where Im working like no other can! Go Princeton Tec, I'd like to see you try and out-do yourself!!
I have used this lamp for a few years now and love the brightness. The highest setting really lights up the trail. This is a pretty comfortable light for its size. It can be bouncy for running thus leading to motion sickness for some. Without question this light is a battery eater. On the max setting expect no more than 2 hours. I always run with a hand held as well and save the bightest settings for technical downhills. Overall a great headlamp, but for running I would check out the BD and Petzl offerings.
This is a good caving headlamp that I have taken on many trips. It seems to be pretty water and dust resistant and takes abuse fairly well. I also have a Petzl Myo RXP that doesn't seem nearly as heavy duty. I walked into a basalt roof and hit the front of the lens very hard, and it came out with a hairline crack.
I can't remember when I got this headlamp. Probably 4-5 years ago when I started peak bagging. It has been with me on every major peak I have done including Gannett, Rainier, Hood, and Shasta. The one draw back of this light is I always get placed in the back of the group because when this little guy is on no one else needs to use a light. It can light up the whole side of a mountain. On almost every trip a stranger has commented on how bright it is and said they were going to get one.I have also used it in some spelunking and it has performed beautifully. The only real problem I have had is the ring that keeps it waterproof has a habit of coming out when you replace the batteries so you have to somewhat tediously put it back in place. While it has never been and issue this would be no bueno with freezing hands.Always use lithium batteries if you are going to be using this in the cold. It will prolong the battery life.It fits on the Petzl Ecrin Roc Climbing Helmet nicely.
this has to be one of the brightest headlamps around, I have been useing mine for 7-8 years nowe and its still going though the hinge has cracked and broken as well as chips in the the top casing. it also gets hot on the head but not a bad lamp!
