Platypus Insulator Hydration System

Whether you’re sipping near-scalding water during a desert hike or reaching for your bottle on a ski trip only to find a solid ice block, you need the Platypus Insulator. This insulated hydration pouch features a Platypus Big Zip SL reservoir with a padded insulator sleeve that keeps water from freezing or getting hot. An insulated tube and bite valve cover keeps your tube from freezing over, and attached D-rings make it easy to attach the insulator to your pack or kayak deck. And with Platypus’ SlimeGuard antimicrobial treatment, your water stays fresh and tasty no matter how long it’s in there.

Bottom Line: It even works with beer. We’re just saying…

Best Reservoir Out There

By:
May 6, 2009

I bought this as a replacement for my other insulated reservoir. I took a hard landing on my back while skiing and the Camelbak burst and I had a rucksack full of Nuun, http://tinyurl.com/nuuntablets. Ugh. Anyway, the Platypus is MUCH easier to clean than the Camelbak as it has a mouth that opens full width and the drinking tube detaches from the bag. I replaced the Platypus drinking tube cover with my old Camelbak one as it has a smaller profile. Now my wife and daughter want new reservoirs so it looks like I'll be buying a couple more. Cheers.

would the platypus insulator be good for nordic skiing?

yes i think that would be one of the best uses for it. Its designed to keep it from freezing and the weather is definitely cold enough if you are skiing

Review Title

the detachable tube is brilliant. it's not super difficult, but still a small chore to thread the drinking tube through the shoulder strap of my pack. so i'm thrilled with the ability to simply detach the tube from the bladder and leave the tube in the backpack.

i took off the hose insulator and cap because it was just too bulky inside my pack (especially inside the shoulder strap), but if you're using this on the outside of a pack i can see the insulator hose working well.

the only thing i'd change: i wish they had put the little clip/loop thing on the insulator bag, on the top of the bag instead of on the bottom. the handle on the top seems bulky and pointless (it doesn't show in the product photo).

Cascade Designs does make the Platypus Insulator in 3 sizes: 1.8L, 2.0L., and 3.0L. Currently backcountry.com only has the 1.8L and 2.0L in stock (click on the drop down bar titled 'select options' under the price). Hopefully that helps.

Great Product

I love this bag. The big mouth zip opening makes filling, emptying, and cleaning the bag a snap. I enjoy the way the tube detaches from the bag, allowing an ease of use with all of my packs that support hydration bladders.

I have a monsoon hydration pack, but the "bladder"

I have a monsoon hydration pack, but the "bladder" tube is nasty. I could get a cleaner thingy, but too lazy.. i just want to know what kind of tube I can get that will attach to a monsoon bladder. or what kind of water pack will fit into this monsoon back pack..

oh its a monsoon "Peak" bag.... if that helps...

Love it!

Great quality, and no leaking at all whatsoever. Seemed to keep water cool while hiking in Arizona. Also doesn't have that "plastic taste" that my last hydration pack had. Great buy!
