Petzl Vasak 12-Point Mountaineering Crampon

The classic design of the Petzl Vasak FL Mountaineering Crampons makes them an ideal choice for general mountaineering and glacier travel. The horizontal front points provide excellent shear resistance in steep snow. Petzl gave the Vasak FL Crampons a Flexlock full-strap binding system to allow them to be strapped to any boots or even your trail running shoes in a pinch. Whether you want to climb Rainer or climb Denali, these Petzl crampons get you up there.

Bottom Line: The Petzl Vasak FL Mountaineering Crampons are proof that simple designs still provide great performance.

No i wouldn't recommend it, it wouldn't be tight at all. Also, if it is larger than probably a 27 mondo, you wouldn't be able to size it the boot.

Yes you can climb ice with these...

I have used these crampons for a little over a year now. From 20-55 degree snow to high-altitude glacier travel to straight up and down waterfall ice. They work well for all of these purposes. I wonder sometimes if people just assumed they wouldn't work on vertical ice and then passed that off as solid advice. Sure they aren't the ideal waterfall crampon but they will definitely get the job done. They work at least as well as BD Sabretooth's which are billed as appropriate for vertical ice. The finish has held up well and so has the sharpness of the points even after plenty of use. These are great multi-purpose crampons similar to the Grivel G-12 which is harder to come across these days in the states. I would recommend them for anyone who wants a general mountaineering crampon that will also allow more extreme types of travel i.e. vertical ice.

This is kinda weird, but is it possible to buy these individually (as in not a pair set)? Maybe directly from Petzl? I already have one and just need one other.

Sturdy Crampons

By:
April 16, 2008

These 'pons are exactly as advertised. A light-ish strap crampons perfect for mountaineering, or just hiking up a slushy trail. I would not recommend them for ice climbing, or anything that requires serious front-pointing, as they are not designed for use with plastic boots. If you want serious ice-climbing performance, buy something else. But if you want a light pair of crampons which will add a much-needed sense of safety while ascending steep or slippery slopes, the Vasaks are perfect.

What binding system would work best for lightweight mountaineering

What binding system would work best for lightweight mountaineering boots (Kayland MXT, heel welt, no toe welt) and some Garmont Radiums?

This binding system would work really well for any type of boot out there. Otherwise you would have to go with a 'newmatic' style binding, which is a front strap-on style and a heel lever.

They should work fine as long as your boot sole length isn't too long for the crampons...I have a huge boot (30.5 mondo) and it still fit in the last notch of most crampons.

Sweet Spikes

By:
November 26, 2009

Sweet crampons. Easy to adjust. Sweet rigid / semi-rigid adaptability.
Antiballing plates work great. No balling up on slushy, wet, or dry powdery snow.

What else can you say? They're crampons. They work like they should.
I wouldn't get TOO steep with them. They flex a fair amount when it gets steep and hard. But these are horizontal frontpoint light mountaineering crampons.

Pros:
Easy to use.
No snow balling.
Easy to adjust
Light

Cons:
Not versatile enough to handle the vertical with confidence.

The regular/medium link bar that comes with it goes up to size 46. So you would need to get the long link bar for a size 47 boot.

As stated above, these are pretty light crampons and can help add safetey to mountaineering or slushy trails, but serious ice climbing they would not be strong enough.
