The Petzl Spirit Express Quickdraw uses notchless keylock gates on both carabiners to make clipping both the bolt and the rope incredibly easy and fast. The bent-gate, rope-end carabiner has a large 20mm opening to allow fast clips from desperate stances. The keylock gates on the Petzl Express Quickdraw also make it a cinch to clean your overhanging project after you send.
Bottom Line: See the difference that keylock gates make by racking up for your next climb with the Petzl Spirit Express Quickdraw.
Yes they are a little pricey, but it is easy to see what you are paying for. First thing that stands out is the beefier sling. More meat doesn't always directly equal more strength, but other thinner slings will twist or swing a lot more making clipping harder, and who wants that? There is also some subconscious reassurance to hanging your life on a little more meat... Next is that huge rubber grommet. Other slings are just tighter on one end, still allowing biners to move somewhat. Ive gone to clip other draws that will remain nameless and the rope side had been completely turned around well bouncing about as I climbed. If it had happened in a more precarious spot, I might have had a major problem on my hands. With the Spirit Express your biner aint going nowhere, hangs solid EVERY time! Moving on to the carabiners, the first thing you notice is color coded biners. This might not be the most techinacl of selling points, but it might be my personal favoret. One color to the rock, one to the rope, how much easier could it get? These biners also have keylock gates which not only make them basically snag proof for clipping and cleaning, I've been told they are also a safer design then the old pin and hook design still used by other companies. The old man at REI might have been pulling my leg trying to make a sale, but it worked. I feel hundreds of times better taking a big wipper on one of these bad boys, than any other draw I have in my arsenal. Bottom line is, this is your life we are talking about. Should you really be ok with cheaper protection??? I say "heck" no!
I love these draws/carabiners, they are wonderful. The keylock nose makes cleaning noticeably easier and they clip well. But these are subtle things and I guess they are worth the price tag if you have the extra money kicking around. Other draws will do the same job, these just do it better.
These are great quickdraws for sport climbing. They are very sexy quickdraws. But ,like i said, "bling" is heavy. They are very easy to clip to bolts and rope. I liked them so much i bought 4 of the longest ones and am not dissapointed.
The trade off is simple: Convenience for weight. First, they aren't cheap. That said, neither are the full sized feather light options. What it boils down to for me is the fact that I hate hanging on to the rock (sometimes desperately), and futzing around with a biner caught either on a bolt or my rope. The Spirit's eliminate that annoyance forever. Plus, the new colors look really cool!
I got 8 of these 3 years ago when I started climbing at Rumney regularly. They are all still going strong. They aren't the lightest but they are just a great all around beater sport draw. They have a very nice clip to them and the webbing/thong combination keeps the lower carabiner firmly in place at all times.
I do enjoy these draws quite a bit, excellent gate action, durable and easily identifiable. fairly light, never twists. love' em. pricey, but you get your money's worth
These draws are by far my favorite, but due to their price I only own two. I would highly recommend them if you want to make the monetary investment. If you don't have the mulah, then it's not the world, though.
I really like the spirits, though not the lightest draw on the market, they clip so well. I have used a few other quickdraws and I feel this is sort of the cadillac of draws. The notchless keylock is a really nice feature. I like the little rubber piece that holds the rope clipping biner, though having this piece on the outside seems like the little rubber would get torn off. Of course I'd rather tear the rubber than the draw, plus the rubber piece is easily replaceable. Overall its great I would recommend them to any sport climber. I recommend getting one of the 11cm versions to use when stick clipping and a couple of the 25 cm versions for anchors. I've used these on trad routes as well and they work well, but I think there's better draws for trad.
This draw is easily the best draw I have ever used. Whether you are working an overhanging project or just starting your climbing career the Petzl Spirit is the draw for you. The notchless key lock gates and thick webbing make this draw perfect for any project. Yeah it's nice to have a lightweight draw, but, generally speaking the super light weight draws have really thin webbing that allows the draw to twist easily which can lead to back clipping and potentially fatal situations. This will never be a problem with the spirit... EVER! If you are looking to buy your first draw don't let the dollar sign scare you, you are paying for top quality for any situation. Just remember when it comes to protecting your self on the wall, "Good enough, isn't" I promise you won't regret buying this quickdraw, but you might regret short changing yourself with something else. enjoy
