Petzl uses perforated foam padding and a mesh lining to make the Sama Harness incredibly breathable and to help you stay comfortable on really hot days. Of course, the Sama Harness keeps all the features that make Petzl harnesses so popular. The pre-threaded DoubleBack buckle adjusts quickly without the need to re-thread. Elastic leg loops stay in place while you heel hook your way to the anchors, and they also drop to let you take care of business on a long climb. The Sama Harness also includes pre-formed gear loops to keep your rack organized and within easy reach.
Bottom Line: Stay cool as you climb in the well-ventilated Petzl Sama Harness.
This is a great harness. Anything Petzl makes is really good. The waist is fairly comfortable and its a pretty good fit. I'm not a fan of the fixed leg loops, but this one isn't bad. It may ride up a little depending on your leg size.
This harness is extremely light and comfortable. You can climb all day and completely forget you have it on. Plenty of room to stash your gear. Most of all without all the extra buckles, it never gets tangled so it goes on and off really easily which is nice if you also go to the gym.
The only thing to be careful of is since it doesn't have leg adjustments you want to make sure you get the right size. While I could probably get away with a small in most other harnesses I needed a medium with this one to make sure the leg loops weren't too tight. So if you are right in between two sizes. Go larger.
I *love* this harness. I'm 5'9", 140 pounds, 30" waist, enjoy long walks on the beach and I wear a Medium in the Sama (and in the Petzl Hirundos.)
I have this year's Sama and this year's Hirundos. They share the same Frame construction that lightens the harness, keeps things comfortable and provides great ventilation. I got the Sama after I had the Hirundos for a while because I wanted something that would be more comfortable for long project-hangdogging or belaying sessions. It fits that bill perfectly.
My sizing experience echos a lot of people's here: I wear the waist-strap pulled through the speed buckle until the buckle is barely touching the other side of the waist-padding. That way, the harness is symmetrical side to side, so my gearloops aren't shifted to one side at all.
With that fit, the leg loops feel snug when you first pull the harness on, but your awareness of the legloops disappears 2 minutes later (that means they fit perfectly.) If you've got Clydesdale thighs, you'll want to go for the adjustable legloops on the Adjama harness.
I've hangdogged in this, taken big whippers, caught big whippers, belayed someone for 60 minutes on a 9 bolt sport route (looking at you, Andy), worn it all day then gotten half-way back to the car before I remembered I had it on. I *never* got that level of comfort with the Black Diamond harness I used to have, honestly.
this harness is great, really comfortable, really simple, looks cool too. my only issue is with the sizing. the medium was too tight on my legs, although everything else fit fine. i got the large and the legs are good, but i have to really crank down on the waist adjustment to get a snug fit. probably something you would want to try on before you buy
Haha okay probably not, but I did five 5.13a's before I sent this route! The petzl sama was an extremely comfortable catch for all the times I fell when I shouldn't of.
I can guarantee that this is the best harness I have ever worn. It is extremely comfortably and light. It has the ability to stash a ton of gear and it also can be used on multi-pitch. I have found that it is excellent for sport and trad and whatever you want to do.
Sizewise you should go get a tape measure and figure out how big your waist is. If you are in the small portion of one size you should stay with that size, but if you are in the large portion of one size you could size up.
I bought this harness because of the venting it offers and in that regard it did not disappoint. As a lot of the previous reviews said the waist to leg ratio on this harness is a bit off. The leg loops are snug and I have to tighten the waist as far as it will go. The front gear loops slope back into the rear of the harness and when I am on overhanging routes the quickdraws slide to the back. It is lighter than my BD Monentum harness and it doesn't give me a heat rash on my back though so I'm gonna keep it.
would this be good if im getting started on rock climbing in a gym?... im 6' 6 ... and weight about 225, it would be i guess 80% on the gym climbing and belaying
yes, I know some people that wish they got this harness before any other one. Just make sure to get the leg loop sizing right many people get it wrong. If your legs aren't proportional then it is better to get another harness with adjustable loops
I have last year's model, but almost everything I love about it seems to have carried over. This is the most comfortable harness I have ever hung in (admittedly I have never been in the Arcteryx). The lack of adjustable legs is great, because you just buy the size that fits you and forget about fumbling with them. The elastic gusset means the legs are always snug, and don't stretch out during a whipper. I looked at lots of Singing Rock, BD and Mad Rock harnesses, and there is no comparison. The only thing it looks like they lost that I liked is the hard plastic gear loops. If you wanna send hard, buy this harness!
This is a great harness. It fits wonderfully, and is pretty light. I am very pleased with it. If you want gear that works and you dont have to bother with get this harness.
This is a great harness! It's super comfortable, and worth the buy. Doesn't hurt any of the guy parts either. Which is very important when looking for a good harness. Anyway, I love it, and I am very happy with it. Later!
It's all about weight these days, and to choose light weight over comfort is very common. This isn't the lightest harness on the market but it is one of the most comfortable. The difference would be forgetting to get a couple of pennies out of your pocket. Think about that the next time you check the gram weight of a harness!!!!
I purchased this harness a few weeks ago and have climbed in it a few times and absolutely love it. I am a big (6'2" 275) guy and the XL fits me perfect. This harness is great the waist is thick so it doesnt pull into your sides and the leg loops are super comfy as long as you have the elastic strap adjusted right. After climbing in this harness i will never buy another harness other than a petzl. Super pleased!!!
I just got one of these about two months ago and its the best harness i am yet to own. I use it in the gym, redpointing, projecting, and on multi-pitch sport routes. Basically its a great all-around sport harness, light enough for freedom of movement but not like those skimpy sport harnesses (hirundos, phoenix) that are uncomfortable to hang in for even the shortest periods of time, you can still comfortably work a route in this harness. The only thing i dont use this harness for is mountaineering and trad, this is because of the fixed leg loops and lighter padding. Also, be forewarned, this harness sizes weird, the leg loops run small while the swami runs big.
What more can I say that hasn't been said already? Its a great harness. Its not very light but it is comfortable and for a gym go-er like me thats exactally what I need. Its a great buy!
If your just getting into climbing and your looking for a great harness at an affordable price you came to the right place. If your not use to how a climbing harness feels, the Sama is a very comfortable break in to the climbing world. If you are a seasoned climber looking for something comfy to sit in while your working your project or while bolting something new the Sama is extremely comfortable and can definitely keep you hanging comfy while workin out a crux sequence. I use this harness for working projects and redpoint in the super light Petzl Hirundos. Sizing on this harness runs pretty true to size, however if your bordering the sizing chart you can size up or down depending on preference. For example, I have size 28 waist but I where a size medium in this harness because I am not looking for an aggressive fit, even though the sizing says I could fit as low as an XS. Hope this was helpful.
This harness is very light and simple to use with the fixed leg loops and pre-threaded DoubleBack buckle. I also think the swami is big and the leg loops are small. The rear gear loop does not hang down far enough. Great for sport climbing or multipitch routes as long as you are not going to be hanging a lot.
