Petzl Nitro Shock-Absorbing Sling - 2007

The Petzl Nitro Shock-Absorbing Sling reduces the force on rock and ice protection to increase the chance that your tied-off blade or crappy ice screw will hold a fall. Each Nitro Sling has releasable stitches that start tearing after an applied force of 2.5kN to lower the force applied to your protection. When the sling is completely ripped, it still holds a burly 22kN. The size 1 Nitro reduces impact up to 25%, the number 2 up to 40%, and the number 3 up to 50%. The more sketchy your pro is, the more energy reduction you need.

Bottom Line: Make sketchy gear a little safer with the Petzl Nitro Shock-Absorbing Sling.

Expensive great shock absorbing sling

By:
December 4, 2007

The Yates Screamers are defacto standard and most common shock absorbing slings. The Petzl Nitro, I think, does a better job at absorbing shock by design. However, it is expensive and should be used to supplement your stash of Yates Screamers. The Nitro works great with ice screws on thin, weak ice. I've fallen hard a few times and the Nitro managed to allow the ice screws from popping out, in contrast to the Yates.
