Petzl Myo 5 Headlamp - 2005

The Petzl Myo 5 Headlamp features dual light sources: a Xenon halogen bulb and 5 LEDs (hence the 5 in name). The Myo 5 is intended for demanding users whose needs alternate between long-range lighting (100m Xenon halogen) and extended battery life (15m LEDs). The rotating bezel switch allows easy selection between the 3 LED brightness settings or distance vision with the Xenon halogen. In this way, the user can customize the lighting level to the activity. Ideal for mountaineers, adventure racers, or anyone moving quickly under variable lighting conditions. The 3 LED settings are as such: Optimum for walking and general use; Maximum for climbing or moving quickly on technical ground; and Economy for reading maps and setting up camp. When the batteries are almost completely discharged, the system switches to reserve power mode, providing proximity lighting and greatly extending burn time.

Bottom Line: My oh my, I love my Myo.

Versatile

This lamp is ready to go out of the box (batteries INCLUDED). You can switch between halogen and L.E.D. with a twist of the lens. Extra halogen bulb comes with it and carries out of the way on the head strap. This lamp is comfy even after several hours of use. Rear battery strap provides good balance which adds to it's comfort. The Myo 5 has now become my favorite headlamp.

Versitile, reliable choice.

This headlamp is excellent for backpacking and mountaineering. The xenon bulb gives an excellent beam for up to 100m ahead and the LED's save battery life when hiking or at base camp. I use the LED's much more than expected and have often left my candle or butane lantern at home. Excellent choice.

so comfortable

By:
October 26, 2004

I needed a head lamp for evening trail runs. I have a Zipka (3 LED model) which is an extremely handy, lightweight item to have. But the Zipka just doesn't put out enough light for many situations. I bought the Myo 5 and was surprised how comfortable it is worn directly on your head (I've only had lights mounted on helmets). I can run in it and it's totally stable, light and comfortable. I can easily switch from the halogen spot to the LED, battery-saving mode. Love it.

Great for Caving

By:
January 26, 2006

This was a great light, but a friend has a Tikka Plus. We both hiked a mountain trail, and his 4 LED gave him sufficient light. We did some cave exploring on the same trip. This is where I had the advantage by far! Looks bulky, but is not by any means. I can vouch for it being comfortable for five hours.

Bright LED on high, ok battery life, not "waterproof"

By:
December 2, 2004

So, I first purchased a MYO 3 from EMS and was luke-warm about the level of light from the LED, so I purchased the MYO 5. On high, it has a definitely useable light level for walking, even for two or three people. I tested the battery life and on 2500 Mah Ni-MH batteries, got about 30 hours on high (not bad). The nice part is that the light level is "regulated", so the intensity drops only slightly throughout the 30 hours, but then takes a complete nose-dive. For comparison, I ran the MYO 3 side-by-side with the MYO 5 on level 2 After 18 hours, the MYO 3 level had dropped well below the MYO 5. By the time the MYO 5 had died, the level of the MY0 3 was almost unusable, but it kept lit for almost 2 times longer. The fact that it is not waterproof has me concerned, I'll just have to see how it does in rain. I am happy with it.

Myo 5 Headlamp

By:
September 22, 2005

I have owned and discarded a half dozen headlamps in the last ten years due to weight, brightness, and functionality.
This one will stay with me as long as it works. The MYO weight is tolerable, it is compact, and bright enough for any nighttime adventure. A++

Mt Kenya & Kilimanjaro

Easy to use and very well made. Friends loaned us theirs for the climbs and we liked the headlamps so much that we replaced older headlamps that we owned.

Excellent piece of lighting; lighter than the duo but same output of light. Great piece for anyone looking at buying one. I used it so far 300 feet underground and at all stages of the night for hiking, great light no blind spots.
